I will try again.

From my experience in the past...I agree for myself that there is a starvation mode. I hardly ate, wrote everything down, exercised alot and filled up on Caffiene. I just end up gaining 10-12 pounds!!! I notice when I eat more I start to lose weight and get smaller,Hmmm ....

Re:The forum (jf)

Maureen K

Dawn

jf

Yes Dawn I asked what would be a good workout for slimming hips and thighs and you recommended Winsor buns and thighs. I might have had it under Jill instead of jf.

I'm really interested in health and nutrition too. I need to take classes to keep up my license and most of the ones I pick are nutrition based. I also like have reading stuff online but youto be careful because there is a lot of mis-information. Also a lot of stuff that is controversial that's why I like the classes I take because the speakers are Registered Dieticians and there is more fact and no hype. I love your morning message on the "what did you eat " I can see you really do your homework.

Thanks jf....I agree about reading stuff online, you have to be careful because there is a lot of mis-information. Thanks about the Morning Messages. I was actually thinking of not posting no more cause theres not too many people that post anymore. What do you think???

I find that even in the community of dieticians and nutritionists, there is a lot of disagreement on what is good for you and what is bad for you. Take milk and soy for example. I heard one speaker talk about milk. I don't drink milk anyway, but after the details of her presentation, I'm glad I don't touch the stuff. Soy is also controversial right now. There are some studies that show a link to breast cancer...of course you have to eat a ton of it, but for some people, soy is their primary source of protein.

I agree Maureen, there is a lot of controversy but I would rely more on the advice of a dieticians over that of Nutitionists because they have more training and it is more standardized. With nutritionists the training requirements depend on where you live and a lot on practical experience. I'm sure there are some really good nutritionists out there but from courses I've taken it seems the ones given by dieticians was less contradictory overall. Soy is controversial and I try and avoid it because of my family history of breast cancer. There are a lot of controversial and questionable opinions out there regarding South Beach diet, Glycemic Index, Atkins, eating for your blood type you name it.

Re:The forum (One Fit Lady)

I'm an oldie - I've been into collage for at least 3 years - I can't quite remember how I got onto it, but I was hooked the moment I did!

I used to be a crazy gym rat in my early 30's but my eating was awful, so you would never know that I could out spin anyone in my class just by looking at me! I got serious with the eating when I was 39 - I know, I'm a bit dense.

So I just turned 43 and I'm going strong! You still can't look at me and guess I work out like a maniac and watch my food (I have been known just to watch the food go into the mouth, instead of avoiding it!). But I'm in the "it's all about me" age and I love my exercise and I'm good with covering up my body, so I'm at peace with the belly and hips and the fact that I can lift heavy, run marathons, swim laps for an hour without drowning - well that all makes it worth it to me! - Sorry, I think I got off track...

Re:The forum (Chryssa)

Dawn

Maureen K

Dawn, why don't you try the nutrition thread a while longer. Then I got into aerobics, and taught it during my last year of high school and through college. After that, I was either a gym member or taking classes here and there, and for the last 10 years I have been into Jazzercise and still love it. The dvds have become more and more a part of my working out as I advance more and need to tackle personal challenges that I don't find in exercise classes (like working for longer durations with weights, using heavy weights and doing intense athletic (non-dance-y) drills). I love my alone workout time as much as I love going to classes!! And, I must say that I favor the dvds over going to the gym... I haven't been using it much.

Re:The forum (SG)

I can't remember exactly how long I was on the old forum, but guessing I would say in 2003. I have been exercising religiously for 9 years now!

Re:The forum (AlmondJoy)

great stories, keep making fitness history for the new exercisers that will come to this forum in the future.

I guess I am still wearing diapers when it comes to fitness=) Before starting doing pilates and leslie I did nothing at all.(for my shame) I walked to work and to school but both work and school were closed by.

Dawn I really hope you get to make your dream come true you will make an excellent instructor. Not only will your students get one heck of a workout but tons of information about how to stay fit and healthy. I would say at least three years ago. I found out about the site after I purchased a CIA video in a retail store. I've been hooked ever since. This forum is soooo much better, though. The final thing that upset me with the old forum is that someone submitted something under my name. It was something I would never have written, so I was quite upset. I'm not sure how it happened. I can't imagine the person did it on purpose. I don't know how you would even do that. I also like the fact that you can post to this forum without having to wait days for Collage to review it before it is actually posted.

I started dance classes in the 70's just for fun. When I started college, I wanted something that I didn't have to think about so hard. That's when I started cardio and callestenics classes at the YMCA. I was soooo sore the first time I did the class. From there I joined Family Fitness in 1984 and did the cardio classes for years. When the step came out, I got hooked on that. I also mountain biked and played tennis. A few years ago, my work schedule got so hectic, I found I couldn't make it to the gym, so I started using exercise videos. I was disappointed, because most of them were so easy compared to what I was used to at the gym. Then I found a Seasun Zeiger CIA video by accident and I loved it. I found the Collage site through the CIA site. Now I feel completely satisfied with my home workouts. I do miss the social aspect of the gym, but this forum is a wonderful substitute.

Thanks to all of you for all the motivation, inspiration, and information you've given me in 2008. I look forward to a great 2009!

Re:The forum (MH)

Janice-That is hilarious about Johnnie Cochran's law firm and the 1800-The Firm phone number. I am just picturing Johnnie promoting the Firm workouts. Too funny.

Mary

Re:The forum (JW)

I used to order directly from The Firm also. Their number was 1-800-the-firm. Now, that number belongs to Johnnie Cochran's law firm. They advertise heavily in our tv market and I shake my head every time. Not only because of the number, though. Many of their commercials still use Johnnie Cochran. That is capitalism at its worst. Now, I am off topic . . . .

I used both Jane Fonda and the Firm Classics and my Collage catalogs began coming also. I don't recall when I first ordered from Collage, but it is many years ago. And I think I only lurked on the old forum.

Janice

Re:The forum (MH)

I started getting Collage catalogs when I was doing the Firm in the late 80's. I ordered directly from the Firm site. Prior to that all through HS/College I played organized sports, v-ball, b-ball, field hockey, flag football, you name it I played it. During college I started to run. At 29 I had knee surgery on both knees and started walking after. After DS1 was born I started with Jane Fonda and after DS2 I did the Firm. I started getting the catalogs after that. I ordered some workouts from collage, did some T-tapp, but started reading the forum about 2006 and started posting last year.

I don't know who responded to my first question but I had addressed it to Collage and their answer was way off base. Collages answer didn't even answer my question. But a very nice poster suggested I read some post by Dr LG (or is it RG) about the benefits of not overstressing the body especially as you start to age. I went back and read all of the previous post on this subject and I got hooked on this Forum and it's wealth of information available here.

And that my friends, is my story! :)

Mary

Re:The forum (Dawn)

Thanks!!! I will post then until I run out of ideas and information.

Re:The forum (Chryssa)

Dawn

Thanks jf....I agree about reading stuff online, you have to be careful because there is a lot of mis-information. So, if you enjoy writing and providing 'food for thought,' we enjoy reading it.

Re:The forum (bk)

I started exercising at home with an exercise bike in my 20's. Then when I was 30 and had my daughter and was working full time, I was too exhausted for the first 5 years or so to exercise. Then I joined a gym and worked out when I could get there (a couple of times per week). When my daughter turned 7, I got a job close to a gym and became more consistent with exercise. My first exercise videos are the result of an infomercial that I saw while at the gym one Saturday afternoon. After using those for around 6 months, I found out about Collage (probably around 2004). A video buyer ever since.
