I'm currently whittling down my wish list to the must haves. Maybe 5 or 6 at least.
Also, my workout is the 2nd thing that I do after work. I feed my furry babies and give them about 10 minutes of "hellos" and then I change into my workout clothes, walk down the hallway to the workout room and just do it.
Good Luck!

Re:Staying motivated (legal pooh)

OMG...this post sounds just like me. I'm motivated for a few weeks, then I start slacking off, and can't keep motivated.

For me, variety is the key, because I get bored very easily. I will also try some of the suggestions noted above including the 100 challenge forum, if I find it.

Ciao, and thanks! Best of luck TO US ALL...

Re:Staying motivated (Tobydogkac)

 Hello-
Do something FUN!! You will suceed.

Re:Staying motivated (Phoenix)

 Hi
I don't know what your specific reason is for exercising, but mine is health related. All my deceased family members died of heart attacks, until you get back to the 1700's. All my tests have always come back "better than perfect" and it looks like I'm going to be hard to kill, (hope so!). Without exercise, my blood pressure is about 130/80. With exercise, 105/63. That makes me want to exercise. I use a wrist blood pressure cuff (about $50), and check it about once a week. Once in a while I'll check it during exercise and then one minute after finishing, just to make sure I'm back to normal within an appropriate amount of time. You could also try Netflix. With your membership you can access some instant play videos at no extra charge. It can add some variety to the videos you have. (Cause you can never have enough, you know).

Re:Staying motivated (lindseylu8)

 All wonderful suggestions above!

I would say start making it an appointment instead of just doing it when the spare time arises. Im sure you are busy and sometimes that time just wont happen if you dont make it a priority. Also the feeling may not always strike you to go workout. So you do it because you have to. Just like you have to brush your teeth, eat lunch, pick up your kids from school (or whatever), you have to get your workout in.

I totally agree w/ the give it 10 min and see if you dont just keep going. If you still end up quitting-at least you got in a 10 min workout! Those small bits add up. Every burnt calorie counts!

Also by making it an appointment or even just doing the 10 minutes you are establishing a habit. That will make it easier and easier to do and to stick with.

Best of luck to you!

Re:Staying motivated (Mom2Hedwig)

 Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the replies. I will check out the support groups here and possibly join. What am I doing when I do work out? Usually nothing. My husband and I are lying on the living room floor. He's giving our rabbit a head rub and I'm bored. So I decide, well, I'll work out. See you in half an hour or 45 minutes. It's kind of a spur-of-the-moment-type-of-exercise mentality, I suppose! I exercise because I don't feel like spinning (as in spinning wheel and making yarn out of roving), knitting, crocheting, beading or reading. And I'm bored. So instead of eating, I'll change into workout clothes and go downstairs. I've tried working out for just 10 minutes, but I don't even last that long!
It's nice to know that I'm not the only one out there who can't seem to get motivated to get moving. :)

Re:Staying motivated (MH)

JCS-Go to the 3rd section, Open Forum. The First section under that, Challenges, and Work-related checkin's.

Then you will see "Daily Check-ins", Chalene Check in and this month's "September 2009 100 Challenge".

Scroll and little bit down and you will see the "October 2009 100 Challenge." You can post your goals now before October 1. Read Hello Betty's instructions. If you want some ideas, read the September 100 challenge. Remember, these are your goals. This is not a contest amoung us but a support system amoung us.

You may PM me if you have any questions.

Mary

Re:Staying motivated (jcs0103)

Where in the forum (the reply doesn't say) is theHello. Could you please say where (what category/subject) is the 6. Check out the "100 Challenge" on this forum" is located?? I looked under the subject areas and could not find it. I am very interested.

Or if someone else could let me know with the specifics? Thanks so much
jcs0103.

HelloBetty

Here are a couple for ideas that have helped me stay on track.

1. Define your goals.
2. Find workouts that you love to do.
3. Start out slowly. Workout out 3 or 4 days a week for 30 minutes to start.
4. Schedule your workouts into your day like you would an appt. Decide what workouts you'll do ahead of time. For example: Monday - Cardio, Wednesday - Weights, Friday - Circuits, etc.
5. Find a workout buddy so that you can keep each other motivated.
6. Check out the "100 Challenge" on this forum. It's a great way to keep yourself motivated and accountable.

Re:Staying motivated (Slinks)

 all of the above :-)

Re:Staying motivated (flower child)

 Make it fun!

Also, when you don't feel like working out, tell yourself you'll just do 10 minutes and stop. After 10 minutes, if your feeling more like it, keep going. I do that some days, and it works for me. Once those endorphins get circulating, I start enjoying the workout.

Re:Staying motivated (annoD)

What's kept me motivated is not wanting to lose the gains that took so long to get. It's a very different story getting back into shape at 50 than, say 35; the body just takes so much longer to respond.

If you push too hard, and hurt too much, that may make you want to stop...it's no fun. Choose something that would be fun once you learned it well...like step, kickboxing or kettlebells, then start slowly, consistently and build your skills. That said, I don't recommend just one because of the risk of overusing certain muscles, so rotate at least a couple...cardio/strength/circuits...

The 10 Minute Solution videos are great with no excuses allowed; everyone has 10-20 minutes a day. Once you see results, it builds confidence to continue.

Re:Staying motivated (MH)

Mom2H-All suggestions above are very good. But Betty's suggestion about the September challenge is very good. It's like your own written goals. There is no contest or anything but it has helped alot of us to stay true to our personal goals. We are setting up for October and if you are interested, hold a place for yourself and come back when you are ready and set you goals by Oct 1. Your goals are your goals and no one elses. Again, it's not a contest.

Re:Staying motivated (HelloBetty)

Re:Staying motivated (Charmaine)

 Hi Mom2Hedwig

I could've written this post myself :) I can't offer you any words of wisdom but I'm just letting you know that you're not alone in the struggle to stay motivated, despite having tons of varied workouts.

The ladies here are great and will offer words of wisdom and encouragement in abundance. I'm hoping to re-start in a couple of weeks (things are just crazy busy with family and work at present) and I too will join the check in forum. Looking forward to seeing how you progress - perhaps we can motiviate each other!
:)

Re:Staying motivated (Jan)

 Hi Mom2Hedwig,

What are you doing on the days you are successful? Then the cycle continues again. And it's not that I don't have plenty of variety of exercises -- I have bellydancing, WATP, a BOSU ball, jump rope, free weights, The Firm's weighted stick and step, Gilad's slim down workout set - even a Navy SEALs workout! Plus yoga and Pilates. I can't seem to motivate myself to get back into exercising, even though I need to. I'm in a size 14 and I'm only 5'1". I can carry the weight fairly well. I don't look bad (so everyone tells me. Maybe they're just being kind!)
Any ideas on how to get past this mental block of mine?
