I do toe taps in some of my videos but I'll incorporate more into my warm-ups before going for my walks.

Re:Walkin' Outside Again!!! (MRS)

I know I can get a mild case of shin splints when I start out on my walk walking too fast. Always warm up slowly - walk at a leisurely pace for at least 5 min. Then start hoofing it! LOL!

I got outside today too - it was a beautiful 62*!!!

Re:Walkin' Outside Again!!! (mlb)

I'm not sure how much this will help once you have pain, but here are some exercises to help prevent shin splints. In a seated position, rest one foot on top of the other foot, and pull the toes on the bottom foot up off the floor. he office. This can also be done by resting an stability ball on your feet and push down on the top of the ball while pushing up with your toes. And something that can be done standing anywhere are simple toe taps....lifting the toes off the ground while the heels remain in contact with the ground. You may be doing shin exercises already, however I do notice that most DVD do not include any exercises like this.

Re:Walkin' Outside Again!!! (Angie)

Welllll...all of this walking is wonderful, got another 2.5 miles in today (no rain this A.M.!) but...since I'm not used to walking on uneven ground, up and down some hills (not real steep, mind you) I have a mild case of "shin splints" which I always seem to get until I get used to walking outdoors again. Been putting heat and/or ice on sore area and rubbing with Myoflex. Any suggestions from anyone as to exercises that can be done to help make them go away? I do a lot of stretching daily, hamstring & calf stretches and floor stuff that involves the whole leg but any suggestions to further help the temporary ache would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, all!

Re:Walkin' Outside Again!!! (Angie)

I see I'm not the only one who thoroughly enjoys walking outdoors when she can!
We've had a not-so-bad winter as far as temperatures go but very snowy, especially Feb. I always wait for the snow to melt off our steep driveway before attempting walking any distance. Where we live is definitely a less than ideal location to walk. There are no sidewalks, people are whizzing by, talking on their cell phones and God knows what else while driving, so I really have to watch out. Thank goodness there's a nice shopping center nearby I can walk to and around without all the fast traffic. Once I get there I feel so much safer. Last summer I had a group of young boys start harrassing me while on my walks. Calling me "hottie" and crap like this. I wrote a letter to the local paper about it and funny, after it was printed I never saw them again! Perhaps parents recognized something and took the bull by the horns!
At one point when they were all yelling stuff at me I yelled back "You all should be ashamed of yourselves. I'm old enough to be your Grandma!"
It was kind of cute and a compliment at first but the third time it happened it wasn't funny, as I felt threatened. There were four or five of them on bicycles, and in a less-traveled, wooded area behind the shopping center. Maybe I overreacted but these days you never know what kids in a group like that will do.
Anyway, I am soooo happy to be OUTDOORS again. Rain is coming tomorrow but I've logged a little over five miles outside in the last three days. So more walking will be in store once this passes!!!!!

Re:Walkin' Outside Again!!! (RubyRay)

 I'm with you Angie!

Time to celebrate the turning of the season! And the great luxury of a walk outside, without having to spend the whole walk looking at the ground for booby traps.

Where I live you can bundle up all you want to fight the cold, but that doesn't help the sidewalks be anything less than treacherous. It rained, than froze on Christmas day here, and ever-since our sidewalks have been a minefield of mountainous ice, often covered by snow, leaving you to take your chances as to what you're stepping on.

Spring is tip toeing in, and I love that. Not only is a walk without fear of a tumble possible, but everything begins to smell again. My doggie just slumps on the passenger seat in winter. But come spring, she's got her nose out the window, breathing in all the smells of life come back.

Re:Walkin' Outside Again!!! (MH)

I love to walk outside but I manage to do it through the entire winter. I just bungle up. But I am happy that all the sidewalks that people do not shovel and annoy me to no end are now clear. I still have to navigate around the inconsiderate people who let their dogs poop on the sidewalk and don't clean it up. But we need the good rain to wash all the yucky stuff away. But the dog is happy..lots of new smells.

Re:Walkin' Outside Again!!!
