Anyone had an umbilical hernia repaired? - Wednesday, May 30, 2012 1:32 PM
I'm having one done soon.  Mine isn't horrible but it makes my stomach pooch out and my belly button looks gross.  I got the hernia while lifting weights while I was eight months pregnant with our 2nd child.  Baby #3 came along soon after so I never had a chance to get it fixed.  Now i'm having a tubal and my dr said he could have a general surgeon come in and fix the hernia at the same time.  He said it would be painful but hey I've had 3 c-sections, it can't possibly be more painful than that?  Anyone have any experience they would like to share?

I haven't had a similar experience but wanted to wish you a safe and successful surgery with the least pain possible in your recovery!!  Make sure to let us know how you're doing, once you're feeling up to it, ok?

I received the greatest wish for my son when he had his procedure in May, from one of my parents at school, a bit of a flower child, who wished my son "optimal hearing".  It was so sweet and sincere coming from her, so I will wish that for you, too : )

I hope it goes well and you are healthy. If you feel comfortable posting I would like to hear all about it. I too have a UH from two kids. My body is slim but my pouch is extended and my belly button a bit down on my front::). I am scared of pain (even though I did two natural births) so maybe it won't be worth it for me?

Willow I have a very high tolerance for pain (3 c-sections) so I might not be the best person to go by as far as pain in concerned.

The surgery was good.  They gave me a local before they put in the IV which is always nice.  They put a tube down your throat and a catheter, pee tube, whatever it's called AFTER your put out.  All I remember is a gal telling me "we are putting something in your IV now that is going to burn pretty bad but after that.... and then I woke up in recovery.  It did burn though but not any worse than the local they put in my hand, only this was going all through my viens.  They blow your belly up with CO2 so they can get the instuments in and around your organs so afterwards your full of...gas lol.  And I look all bloated and feel like I've eaten a bucket of beans, gross.  They made an incision right above my pubic area and one in my belly button.  Both will heal and you won't be able to see much of a scar, unless your checking out my privates or staring into my belly button lol.

They gave me Loratab for painkillers because it's the only one I'm not allergic too.  Honestly IB prufen works better though.  The painkiller just makes me sleepy.  Right after surgery pain wise I'd rate it a 4 on a scale from 1-10 with 10 being horrible.

Now that I'm home my dh has me on an alternating schedule of IB prufen and painkillers.  I'm taking 2 of the Loratab (I think they are 7.5 mg) and 4 of the other (a total of 800 mg).  My pain now, 13hrs after surgery is a 2.

I didn't get the mesh after all.  The dr said I was too skinny and the mesh woudln't fit right so he stiched my abs back together.  Good because with the mesh the hole stays there until the muscle can grow over it so your abs will be a little spaced open there.  With the stiches he pulled my abs back together so my belly will be flat again.  Only it'll be a 6 week recovery versus maybe a few days with the mesh.  So NO weights in my workouts for a few weeks :(  Guess I need to go get those Ellen Barrett DVDs back from the library.  And break out my old yoga/pilates DVDs.

I haven't seen my belly yet, it's still covered with gauze and tape but in a few days I can take that off and shower that area.  I'm excited to see it.  My dh helped them put the gauze and tape on (the stuff theY put on right after surgery was dripping blood (sorry, TMI) and he said my button was a inny again :D  Happy to hear that.

That's all I can remember right now.  I'm still a little foggy from the Loratab so excuse my poor spelling and rambling lol.  If you have any more questions just ask.

LNW: Glad that your surgery went well:) It's gotta be a relief that it's over! The 6 weeks will go by before you know it.
So far I got Jackie Warner's One on One from the library. Waiting for Bob Harpers and some Cathe's. I have been so sore for a couple days from doing CLX and Jari in the same day that I only watched it.....it does look good. Felt like I almost gotta a good w/o just watching it:)

Glad to hear you have that behind you.

BTW - I had a girlfriend who's inny became an outy when she was pregnant.  Right before her deliverly date she was ironing a shirt, leaned too close to the ironing board and ironed her outy.  PAINFUL.  Having an outy has its risks.  That's one risk you won't need to ever experience.

:D  That made me laugh MLB, which now I feel bad for lol.  I outy was just gross looking.  I have these camis I got from Wal-Mart that have an elastic band in the waist that pulls everything in http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sweet-Nothings-Get-the-Skinny-Firm-Control-Shaping-Tailored-Cami-Style-83266/19886973  I have several of these in black and white and they keep my hernia pulled in so it doesn't stick out.  I'll be glad to get rid of them though.

Day 2 and I'm feeling pretty good.  So long as I keep a steady flow of IB Profen and Loratab in my system I'm oblivious to the pain lol.  Tomorrow life returns to normal, the kids are staying with grandma and my dh has to go back to work so it'll just be me, the computer and a lovely stack of Supernatural DVDs, seasons 1-5.  I should be okay ;)

I need to eat more though.  I don't know if it's the meds or what but I only ate barely 300 calories yesterday and I had to force feed myself the 500 I've eaten so far today.  Is that normal?  I was STARVING after my c-sections.  But I was also nursing and breastfeeding mamas need lots of calories.

I'm so glad the surgery went well and you're managing your pain in recovery.  That's the hardest part.  Or no, one of the hardest things is not starting back to exercise when you "feel" like you can.  Try hard to follow the recovery rules, this time will be over before you know it and be a mere blip on your exercise log when you look back on it.  That's always hard for me, but hopefully you'll be ale to resist and to fully recover.
Sorry for the mom moment : ) I hope you can enjoy your day tomorrow.  That actually sounds kind of wonderful.  Keep up the successful healing!

Annie that's so funny you brought the exercise thing up.  I was thinking about pulling out this Leslie 5K with a Twist DVD I got at the library last week tomorrow for a test run.  Probably shouldn't though.  It's SO HARD not to workout!
