I can't remember exactly how long I was on the old forum, but guessing I would say in 2003.  I have been exercising religiously for 9 years now!

Re:The forum - Thursday, January 01, 2009 4:07 PM
I started poking around the old forum about a year ago and loved reading the posts but didn't post, and joined this one (and started posting) in September.

I have always exercised- as a girl and young teenager, I did ballet and was on pointe for some of that... but decided to stop after realizing I didn't want it to be a career option. Then I got into aerobics, and taught it during my last year of high school and through college. After that, I was either a gym member or taking classes here and there, and for the last 10 years I have been into Jazzercise and still love it. The dvds have become more and more a part of my working out as I advance more and need to tackle personal challenges that I don't find in exercise classes (like working for longer durations with weights, using heavy weights and doing intense athletic (non-dance-y) drills). I love my alone workout time as much as I love going to classes!! And, I must say that I favor the dvds over going to the gym... I haven't been using it much.

Yes Dawn I asked what would be a good workout for slimming hips and thighs and you recommended Winsor buns and thighs.  I might have had it under Jill instead of jf.

I'm really interested in health and nutrition too.  I need to take classes to keep up my license and most of the ones I pick are nutrition based.  I also like  have reading stuff online but youto be careful because there is a lot of mis-information. Also a lot of stuff that is controversial that's why I like the classes I take because the speakers are Registered Dieticians and there is more fact and no hype.  I love your morning message on the "what did you eat " I can see you really do your homework.

Thanks jf....I agree about  reading stuff online, you  have to be careful because there is a lot of mis-information. Thanks about the Morning Messages. I was actually thinking of not posting no more cause theres not too many people that post anymore. What do you think???

I find that even in the community of dieticians and nutritionists, there is a lot of disagreement on what is good for you and what is bad for you. Take milk and soy for example. I heard one speaker talk about milk. I don't drink milk anyway, but after the details of her presentation, I'm glad I don't touch the stuff. Soy is also controversial right now. There are some studies that show a link to breast cancer...of course you have to eat a ton of it, but for some people, soy is their primary source of protein.

Dawn, why don't you try the nutrition thread a while longer. I started to report in, but then it got so busy, it was hard for me to remember what I ate during the day...in detail anyway. I will try again.

Thanks Maureen... I know what your saying about the soy,I was just reading a book I just got from the library and it was saying For Pear Shapes BCP and Foods Containing Phytoestrogens might  cause estrogen levels to be higher than Natural. Pears Shapes may have higher estrogen levels then apple shapes which means we have to be careful not to increase thoses levels. Which can cause Breast Cancer and also weight gain. They said to Limit are intake on soy no more  then 3 times a week. I dont know how true this is but....I would like to learn more about this!

Maureen,I notice also there is a disagreement on Starvation Mode. Some say its not true and some say it is.

I'm an hour glass shape, so I'm not sure what the soy debate says about my situation. I've always thought the "starvation mode" concept made a lot of sense, but might not apply to everyone. I can lose weight fairly easily and my husband can't at all. He always jokes that if some catastrophe happened, he would survive and I wouldn't...ha, ha.

Dawn, I have also read about soy and estrogen levels. I want to add that the same applies to drinking big quantities of alcohol. Excessive alcohol is A BIG NO-NO for women. I know it at first hand

I'm an oldie - I've been into collage for at least 3 years - I can't quite remember how I got onto it, but I was hooked the moment I did!

I used to be a crazy gym rat in my early 30's but my eating was awful, so you would never know that I could out spin anyone in my class just by looking at me! I got serious with the eating when I was 39 - I know, I'm a bit dense.

So I just turned 43 and I'm going strong! You still can't look at me and guess I work out like a maniac and watch my food (I have been known just to watch the food go into the mouth, instead of avoiding it!). But I'm in the "it's all about me" age and I love my exercise and I'm good with covering up my body, so I'm at peace with the belly and hips and the fact that I can lift heavy, run marathons, swim laps for an hour without drowning - well that all makes it worth it to me! - Sorry, I think I got off track...

I agree Maureen, there is a lot of controversy but I would rely more on the advice of a dieticians over that of Nutitionists because they have more training and it is more standardized.  With nutritionists the training requirements depend on where you live and a lot on practical experience.  I'm sure there are some really good nutritionists out there but from courses I've taken it seems the ones given by dieticians was less contradictory overall.  Soy is controversial and I try and avoid it because of my family history of breast cancer.  There are a lot of controversial and questionable opinions out there regarding South Beach diet, Glycemic Index, Atkins, eating for your blood type you name it.

From my experience in the past...I agree for myself that there is a starvation mode. I hardly ate, wrote everything down, exercised alot and filled up on Caffiene. I just end up gaining 10-12 pounds!!!  I notice when I eat more I start to lose weight and get smaller,Hmmm ....
