15 Pound on Lowering Cholesterol Diet, No Other Changes! - Thursday, April 19, 2012 1:49 PM
Hi,  just had weight checked today, and to my shock,  have lost not just 5 or 8 pounds since November,  but FIFTEEN !  (no wonder jeans sliding down hips!).   All I have done is to read labels, cut out the sat fat,   no candy or baked goods (except whole wheat pitas on occasion).   That's it.   It's true,  we are what we eat!  And,  for new folks, I am a senior, aged 66.   I confess to adding one more day of cardio to my regime though,  but most emphasis on my workouts is free weights, Pilates, and swimming (in summer oron trips). Hope this helps others who might be stuck on their weight-loss goals.

That's fabulous, AK. It's takes strong will power for me to stay away from candy and baked goods. How were your other numbers? Improved as well, I bet. Keep it up.

Congrats, AK!  That is great!  I've been monitoring my food intake the past several weeks and lost about 5 lbs. and I've been doing brisk walking 3 - 5 days a week for 45 - 60minutes at a time.  My eating has been pretty restrictive for me though, cutting out bread and really watching my portions.  Now that my back is starting to feel better, I'll add weights back in for hopefully even better results.  But I find it really hard to be so strict with my eating.  Can you share a sample day of your meals?

Good for you on sticking with your plan and having such positive, undeniable results. Great work!!

Nice going, AK!  It's amazing the positive changes that can be made when we get our bodies in tune with what we eat.  Let me throw something into the conversation.  I belong to a civic organization that has a lunch meeting once a week.  Lunch is a very nice buffet at a hotel.  I generally passed on dessert (usually cobbler and bread pudding), but had a separate salad plate and main plate with entree, etc.  A couple hours later I was usually hungry.  About a month ago, I 'downsized' to just the dinner plate and rethought the portion size.  Amazingly, I was satisfied.  I've had the same experience with the lunch I bring to work.  I'm not as hungry in the evening.  Plus, my problem with sodium (swollen ankles) is going away and I've dropped a few pounds.

Hello, and yes, labs are better, too....cut in HALF!   Now, as forWHAT we can eat on my physician's lowering cholesterol diet,at first, I thought it was so restrictive,  why bother eating? However,  am so used to it now that it seems regular!  ANYfruit and veggie allowed, in moderation.  That means steamed veggies (add low fat tofu or tuna if you wish),  any kind of salad,  for example, I love jicama, red cabbage,  apple and tofu salad.   Grains like bulgar, oatmeal, in moderation and also nuts of all kinds and dried fruit in small servings.   Fish is cooked in our electric oven,  takes about 20-15 min.   I eat cod, halibut,  tuna.   One egg a week.  One small serving beefif you want once a week, cooked as you like.  A sweet potatocooked in my small crock pot daily.   Yummy!   Two apples a day,  easy with all the new varieties in the stores,  love Lady Alice and Pink Lady.  Low salt low fat nut butters are ok,and so are low fat whole wheat crackers such as AK Mak.  Whole wheat pita bread is ok if you need some bread.   Flaxseed and sprinkled chopped walnuts and dates on oatmeal and low fat soy milk for breakfast.   One alcoholic drink allowed per day,  I like a g and t in the afternoon or "Irish coffee" on occasion.   Plenty of green tea,  diluted unsweetened juices are fine,  such as diluted cherry juice or limeade.  I find you can almost add the same amount of water as comes in the bottle or container, and it still tastes fine.  Nonfat Greek yoghurt makes a great snack,  add a bit of chopped fruit. One does not need a full carton nor a ton of fruit to have a filling snack.   Those are some examples.   Hard part now is getting all new pants.

Congratulations to your success Alice Kathleen!
I just bought some flaxseed meal the other day on the advice of my pharmacist for menopausal stuff. I'm trying to figure out what to do with it other than putting it on oatmeal.

Any ideas?

Salads?

Wow, thanks for sharing your menu, AK.  And congrats again on your success, especially with lowering your cholesterol, which is also something I need to do.  I have been better with my eating but cutting down on breads and pasta is really killing me :D

Try having whole wheat pasta, but no more than once a week.Cutting off the bread has been easy, but boy, do I miss
my Payday candy bars!

I thought eggs were ok now. I have started eating more eggs for breakfast for the protein. I scramble them with chopped tomatos.  AK, did your doctor say no eggs?

She suggested one egg a week if I wished, and one serving of beef a week if I wished.   I often forget to buy either, but a hard boiled egg or scrambled egg is mighty good for a quick meal.

I am not finding it hard at all.   Love my falling-down jeans, even
my Bardot hot pink ones that I am wearing today are loose!
I eat veggies,  tofu,  soy milk,  Greek yoghurt  (nonfat plain),
fruits of all kinds,  two apples a day,  salads of all kinds (never
cared for dressing anyway),  whole wheat pitas or low fat
Triscuits as a snack,  nuts in small amounts,  whole grains like
oatmeal, bulgar,  occasional whole wheat pasta in moderate
amounts.  Amazing thing is that I FEEL better without the
sweets and heavy dairy.  I always thought I ate healthfully, ie,
whole wheat,  organic,  fresh.  But I see that (for me, anyway)
cutting out the fat is a better way to eat.   Best,  AK
