Your recommendations for a barre - Sunday, September 13, 2009 8:51 AM
Unfortunately I have not been able to find a barre in my area on Craig's list.

Do any of you own the Health Mark Portable Ballet Barre, which Physique 57 refers to on their web page? The price looks good with free shipping - http://www.mercantila.com/p/health-m...e#ReviewHeader    Do any of you own the Cardio Barre?

I own so many barre workouts, I thought it was finally time to make the investment (and one last "me" purchase before Christmas). I do have a workout room so I can keep the barre assembled at all times.

Wondering what the pros and cons are of each barre. As this is a major investment I want to make the right decision. Thanks for your help.

There is another barre from Cardio Barre. It's $129 + $25 shipping, but it comes with 4 workouts. Check out the website below. You can see the barre in use in some class clips on their site.

I WANT TO PURCHASE A BARRE - TONIGHT!  BUT, REMEMBERING THE WORDS OF LAURA  REGARDING IMPULSE BUYING - WAIT 24 HOURS.

I just sent an email to a few of the Bar Method locations to see if they endorsed the barre I mentioned above.

I should remember my own advice, hehe.

Words to shop on:

I like my Fluidity barre A LOT (Great gift, Mom!  Thanks again!)  That said, it's kind of bulky.  If you find a need to move it from room-to-room (which you don't anticipate), you'l find it doesn't corner well.  And, due to it's one-side construction, you can't simply move to the other side of the barre for things (but you can pretty simply overcome this by facing it front and turning yourself to the side to workout).  Since I'm rather short, and it adjusts even lower than I need it, it's great for shorties (I cannot confirm it's great for tallies, though).  And, unfortunately, the mat portion is segmented just exactly where you want to position your feet sometimes, which feels weird (I sometimes solve this by not unfolding the matt at all).  As you know, it has those extendable supports, you'll probably need to push those in for a few ballet exercises, and just as a warning, the barre holds less weight in that position.  BUT, you aren't supposed to have your weight on it for those anyway!  It's just kind of fun to pull up and sit on the thing just to say, "O wow, it can!"  Ha! You WILL need to put your whole bdy weight against if for a few of the exercises in the actual FLUIDITY dvds (they have you sit beneath it and pull up).

It's the only barre I've ever owned, so I can't compare it.  But, it's likable and well made, though not perfect.  And (for enabling purposes...) may I say that I think that if you own and enjoy a lot of barre stuff, you deserve a barre.

If you are handy, you CAN google how to assemble one from pipes from your local lowe's (I've seen instructions for PVC or metal ones).

I've seen people selling the above on auction sites.

Thanks for this question.  I want a bar too and have looked at the one P57 uses but wasn't it 179$.  I will check out the other site too.  I am tall and I need to have it fold away because I don't have a workout room.  I always haul all my stuff into the already small living room and then have to hall it all back.  I use my luggage on wheels to bring my stuff back and forth :)  DH thinks it is hilliarous.  DH said it would be to hard to make one portable, not sure if that is true or he just doesn't want to do it!

Lets keep checking on new sites and maybe we can all find one reasonably price!

Thanks again

Both are adjustable in height.  The 4 and 5 ft is the length of the barre.  Anybody think these look good and do you think the 4 ft long one would be long enough!

In your top tool bar (on your reply box), you will see a little icon that looks like a teenie globe or little green dot. Overlapping it is a teenie pic of a li'l chain link.  Click there.  You will get a box to cut and paste (from your browser's URL box) the addy. (You should also be able to just cut and paste the url into the message body if you prefer).

(The li'l globe with the broken chain link is for removing links.)

Laura, quoting one of the reviews for the Health Mark Portable Barre below - is this what you were referring to ?
Thanks,
Donna D.

Also, the attachment holding the bar is under the bar so you get the full use of the entire top length of the bar, as opposed to some bars which have attachments on the sides or top.

Help - I can't make up my mind - Tuesday, September 15, 2009 5:06 PM
I'm still bar hopping - I mean barre shopping.  I can't make up my mind!

The Cardio Barre does look interesting - it's only 13 pounds and is smaller in length.
http://www.cardiobarre.com/portableballetbarres_pro.html

The Health Mark I believe is around 36 pounds.  I should probably think about the ability to move it from one room to another.  I have 2 rooms downstairs where I exercise - as the family room can be either too hot or too cold at certain times of the year.

Why can't I make up my mind?  For goodness sake, I probably wouldn't use it for more than 30 minutes a day.  It's not like I want to be a ballerina when I grow up.

I gotta say the P57 barre looks nice, in pics at least.  It looks pretty solid and it's adjustable.  (I don't think the Cardio Barre is adjustable...and I was disappointed in the one Cardio Barre dvd I tried.)  They showed it broken down into a bad, and someone pulling body weight against it....  Hmmm....  But, it's almost as much as my Fluidity barre would be new.

Still, if I were shopping for one, and if I DID NOT NEED TO BREAK IT DOWN TO STORE IT, I think that might be the one I bought....  The cardio barre doesn't look as stable, though it may be.

Hi Donna,

Thanks for your email.

The Bar Method does not endorse the Health Mark barre. The company is actually using our logo without our permission, of which is legally being handled.

However, we do endorse barres by ABC Dance. Please see our website (http://www.barmethod.com/dvds/exercise-dvds.html) for information. Note the 10% off discount!

Hope this helps.

Donna D~

I guess you are talking about my mention of needing to stand side or reposition the barre?  I think this side-view may explain.

It the triangular support in front of the barre that means you can only work on one side of the barre.

So, Assume you TV is represented by this line __________________.

Now, suppose you want to mirror the instructor in, o say, element Ballet.  Her barre is set up perpendicular to the tv, like this line:
                                                                                  l
                                                                                  l    *
                                                                                  l    **
                                                                                  l    **
                                                                                  l    *
                                                                                  l

Let those silly astericks repesenting the barre apparatus that prevents that other side from being workable.  So, you cannot "mirror" and instructor who uses the barre in a position that is perpendicular to the television screen.    Unless you are willing to move the barre, of course. And, um, it can scratch hardwoods if you scoot it without folding it (sad that I know!).  You can of course, turn it paralell to the tv and simply forgo mirroring.  Although, I rather like sideturned-bare, front-facing-me position for things like, say, Melissa Lowe's Ballet Workout.

Does that makes sense?  What that what you are asking?

L.

I'm in the Sacramento area and I'm looking to send my Fluidity Bar off to a nice new home. It was used only once and as much as I like the construction and design of the barre, I've realized that I'm never going to use it. I have two of the three videos that came with the barre and I will try and track down the third (I just moved to a new place and still have stuff in boxes).

Anyone interested?

Hey Roni

Thanks for the update on the barre.  Right now I am using an adjustable coat rack that so far has worked fine.  I am waiting to receive the 3 dvd in the set so I don't know if the coat rack will work for that one but right now it does work.  How much did you want for it?  Can it fold up and be put away also.  Thanks for posting this, appreciate it.

Hi Bopper :)

I don't want anything for it. It's free to a good home as long as someone picks it up from my place. It's way too big and heavy for shipping. I'm not sure how much it would cost to ship.

Yes, it does fold up and can be put out of the way.

Hi Marianne,

Welcome to the forum!

Yes, the walkblaster was discontinued by the manufacturer.  You might try the online auction place.

A more expensive alternative would be - if you own the full size club step, purchased the slanted risers from Collage.  I purchased them last month and I am very pleased with the purchase.  It takes the workouts up a notch from the walkblaster.  Of course you don't have the colors, but it is a no-brainer to follow the workouts without the colors.

The slanted risers are a great purchase overall! I find them useful for many exercises and routines!
