A video classic. It’s an easy-to-follow, but no-nonsense, ballet class by David Howard. He’s a former soloist at the Royal Ballet and founder of the famous New York studios. Starting with the basics, you’ll learn the various positions and then progress into the flowing movements that make ballet so gracefully inspiring. Includes terminology and mistakes to avoid. ©1981. | You won't get a workout with this one! |
This tape is basically a reference guide for ballet positions and basic moves. You can use it to build your own ballet workout, but if you try to use it alone, you will end up with one leg stronger than the other! A few of the beginning moves are shown performed on both sides of the barre, but as the tape goes on, the moves are done using one side only. The music is quite lovely. - posted by Sue on 10/1/2006

good beginners video
This tape is a wonderful way to learn some basic ballet moves and terminology. You'll have to rewind the tape to get a complete workout on both legs, but it's worth it. I do this tape (or just the barre portion) once a week as a change of pace from weight lifting or other toning. Be patient: you won't be able to do every move right away. Ballet takes time to learn! But if you've always wanted to learn ballet and never got the chance as a child - like me - you'll enjoy this video. - posted by Kristen on 4/29/2003

Good for learning the steps once or twice...
I was hoping for a good basic ballet class. This is not it. It is more of a reference tape on ballet form. David Howard goes through all of the basic ballet moves with a (very limber young) dancer, but only does, for example, two plies in each position. Also, for some of the more advanced steps, he leads you through one side, and says "don't forget to do the other side!" and then doesn't do the other side and proceeds to the next step! So, unless you are into starting and stopping your tape a lot, and dancing without accompaniment, this is not for you. Might be a good reference for parents with practicing children. - posted by Lara on 7/23/2002
