Certified instructor description: A tough, fast-paced program; Karen blends interval step-aerobics with solid muscle toning. You’ll maximize calorie burning and maximize the excitement during her seven sprints. They’re 1-½ to 5-½-minute high-intensity segments alternated between medium-intensity aerobics (just slowing down, never stopping). Squats, propulsions and non-stop large limb movements; it’s challenging because you’re blending intensity with maximum control. You also get classic upper body and ab floorwork. Great cuing (she’s the 1992 IDEA Instructor of the Year). Requires 2 to 8 lb. dumbbells. ©1993. DVD has: Programmable chapters, Narrow screen.

Karen Voight's Energy Sprint

Best all around workout!!
Used a tape of this in the 90's and shared with a friend. It is the BEST all around workout for strength, flexibility, and endurance that I've ever found (and I do yoga, hike, walk/run). Easy to follow and demonstrates "work arounds" that might be needed!! Highly recommend. - posted by Faye on 1/24/2013
Still love it
I had this video years ago when VCR's were "it". Gave away all my tapes when we switched to DVD's. My daughter and I always loved this workout. It is still one of the best. We laugh about the style of the WO wear worn by the exercisers but the work out is solid. Wish some of the newer videos were as good. You will get a full rounded WO including weights within an hour and a half. It is definitely an advanced WO but you can easily modify to match your own level. I am 57 and my daughter is 27. I have been working out for over 30 years. - posted by Janet on 10/20/2012
Stands the test of time!! Still a goodie
I had to buy the DVD to replace the tape I've had for many years!! Even with so many changes in the exercising world...this workout is still effective!! Karen builds to higher intensity gradually so you don't feel overwhelmed. The weighted work is effective and you can make it easier or harder by the weight used. Same with the cardio...you can jump higher or stay grounded. It's simply a solid workout that will give you a slow burn at first and increase to sweaty decent cardio. I have to agree that this is more of an intermediate to advanced workout. I'm a Cathlete (and also do Michelle Dozois and some others) but I do have some of Karen's and this is for my easier days when I don't want to get too crazy. The outfits are kinda funny, but honestly it's a great, solid workout! - posted by peg on 10/2/2012
Still a good one after all these years
I pulled this one out of my old VCR collection that I bought from Collage in 1994 or so and it is still fun, with memories of the early 1990's. The choreography is easy to do and the weight section for the arms is very easy (good for those easier rotation days). What I really enjoyed was the cardio step program. I would rate this an intermediate program. I wish Karen would put out some new DVDs! She is still the bomb! - posted by Denise on 9/9/2012
The best go-to video for a great workout
I had this video a long time ago, back in VHS form. I was so pleased to find it remade into DVD format. This is the greatest "go to" video for a fantastic, tough, and motivating workout. The steps are challenging but not difficult. Karen demonstrates how to make moves even more challenging without making you feel like you "have to." Karen has always been a no nonsense instructor, and this DVD is no different. You will love it! - posted by Robbin on 1/3/2012
Intense but Doable
I give this DVD maximum stars because it addresses the entire body in an effective but doable routine. Also, one can choose a la carte options, and do only the cardio, or upper body,or abs, or stretching. The upper body exercises are unique, and performed in a non-stop manner using hand weights. It seems simple at first but becomes challenging as the reps increase. I like the step portion as well. It isn't too fast, and the choreography is not too difficult to follow. It addresses balance as well as strength. Energy Sprint is a great workout in its entirety, or done by segments. - posted by Karen on 7/27/2011
Excellent workout
I have used this video off and on for a few years now. I am in my mid 50s and am still able to do it with no problem. I feel so good after doing this with tons of energy. She is a super instructor and very easy to follow. I too wish she would make some more step workouts. - posted by Barbara on 6/5/2011
Shoutout to Karen Voight!
Pleeeease make some more STEP videos! Do you see how many people love this? It's been tooo long since your last one! This workout so skillfully uses momentum and pacing to push you to your next level. I would buy ten more in a heartbeat if I knew they were this motivating. I recommend this for intermediate exercisers, (which I am) for those reasons. - posted by Kay on 2/14/2011
Amazing workout!
I have done this workout for years and love it!! Running is my primary cardio but I use this as cross training and during the winter months when its too cold and icy to run outside. Its perfect because its cardio and toning. Its challenging so you have to stick with it. She is a great instructor--she knows what she's doing! - posted by Sara on 2/10/2011
A TRUE CLASSIC
I bought this workout on VHS from Collage many moons ago, and it's one that I purchased on DVD too (it transferred very nicely). Why? Because it's great no matter how old it gets! Sure the outfits are dated but I've seen stranger attire in some new DVDs. I've always found it disconcerting that the workout starts with leg toning that yes, is somewhat boring, but I push myself through it because I know it is effective. Then comes the stepping which is nicely choreographed with flawless cueing. The workout finishes with a quick cardio sprint, then weights and abs segments that are short but thorough, and a nice stretch. When I have 80 minutes and am feeling up to it, I do the entire workout and I always feel great afterward. I advise younger Collagers not to be swayed away from Energy Sprint because it's a couple decades old. A wonderful heart-thumping total workout never goes out of style! - posted by Susan W. on 12/5/2010

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Programmable chapters
X
At the beginning of your workout, you can select the exact segments you want to play that day. The DVD will then play all those segments in the order you chose.
Narrow screen
X
When played on a widescreen TV, this program will show black bars on the left and right sides. On an older 4x3 ratio TV, it will fill the entire screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
