Time graph for Karen Voight's Energy Sprint

A tough, fast-paced program; Karen blends interval step-aerobics with solid muscle toning. You’ll maximize calorie burning and maximize the excitement during her seven sprints. They’re 1-½ to 5-½-minute high-intensity segments alternated between medium-intensity aerobics (just slowing down, never stopping). Squats, propulsions and non-stop large limb movements; it’s challenging because you’re blending intensity with maximum control. You also get classic upper body and ab floorwork. Great cuing (she’s the 1992 IDEA Instructor of the Year). Requires 2 to 8 lb. dumbbells. ©1993. DVD has: Programmable chapters, French option.

Karen Voight's Energy Sprint

Dated, but good workout
I did just purchase this dvd even though it is old. I had to laugh when first turning it on with the outfits they wear. However it is still a workout no matter what they are wearing! I think her cueing could be better and it did get boring in spots but it was still effective. I felt she rushes through the warmup and through the stretching. I am not a big Karen Voights fan, so if someone else would have done this workout, I probably would have given it 5 stars. - posted by Mac on 9/28/2009
Old School Karen
Pulled this out again after ten years! You have to laugh at the dated outfits but this is still a great workout. I'm giving 4 stars for 2 reasons: first, I do have to say the standing legwork is rather boring and 2) the opening section of the arm work really bothered my shoulders, especially the lat move - taking your arms straight over your head. But that might just be me getting older :-) The ab routine, forget it - Karen at her absolute best. It hurt to laugh the next day. - posted by Sue on 6/1/2009
I Still Love It.
I did this for the first time in years. I used to do it every day with light hand weights! This really kicked my butt today. The only criticism I have is the warm up and the lame toning work at the beginning. I still used the VHS tape. When I get my DVD this is so getting programmed out. An earlier poster said this started out as an advanced workout and has over the years become an intermediate. I've gone just the other way. I was 48 when I bought this, now at 61 this is definitely advanced. - posted by Robin on 3/30/2009
Another killer Voight workout !
This has been in my library for 11+ years and it still rocks ! Karen's old school videos (like this one, Great Weighted and Streamline among others) will absolutely shred you up if you use them consistently. I love the DVD format where you can pick and choose how long/intense a workout you want to do - excellent ! - posted by C.S. on 12/23/2008
Bought it for the 2nd time
I originally had this workout on VHS in 1993 after I had my first baby. I just had another baby 2 months ago and decided to order it again for a postpartum workout. Talk about TOUGH! I worked out my whole pregnancy but this workout is kicking my butt and taking off the pounds just like it did the last time I used it. The intervals are just long enough. And if it does get easier I'll just up my step! The only thing I don't like about it is it's very long. So I just do the cardio one day and the weights/abs the next. - posted by Heidi on 7/29/2008
Perfect!
This video has the perfect combination of muscle building and aerobics. I enjoy being able to pick what I want to work out and a get a good workout on those sections in a minimum amount of time. If you can only have one exercise video in your collection, GET THIS ONE! - posted by Melanie on 5/30/2008
Awesome aerobic workout
This workout is one of Karen Voight's best. - posted by Ellen on 1/21/2008
Good
Excellent steady pace that burns fat at a lower intensity. A staple in my library when I want an easier tape that is low impaction. Maybe old but I enjoy the change. I'd say intermediate/low advanced. - posted by on 8/7/2007

not for advanced
I was expecting a long challenging step routine and what I got was a long easy one. I like Karen, but I felt the sprints were very easy. I consider myself to be high intermediate. I do a lot of cardio and run about an 8 1/2 min. mile so this cardio barely got mt heart rate up. The toning was very easy. The ab section was fair. - posted by Jill on 12/10/2006
A classic
What an excellent workout. It was made in 1993 and is every bit as relevant and effective today as it was back then. As always, Karen works you hard. The intervals were interesting and effective. I liked that the class contained "normal", everyday people and not just "supermodels". Some other reviewers have complained about the music but I liked the "80's style" music quite a bit.I do recommend that you get the DVD so you can easily bypass the toning -- for some reason the toning takes place before the cardio, a format I don't care for. Nevertheless, this is a great workout. - posted by Marianne on 11/14/2006

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Programmable chapters
X
At the beginning of your workout, you can select the exact segments you want to play that day. The DVD will then play all those segments in the order you chose.
French option
X
In addition to English, you can choose to hear the program in French.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
