Certified instructor description: Fast-paced with lots of excellent instruction, it’s one of the longest and most challenging body-shaping videos ever. Karen maximizes the results by maintaining resistance during every movement. A motivating, positive personality (the 1992 IDEA Instructor of the Year), Karen uses classic routines in a variety of unusual ways to avoid boredom (e.g. working your biceps as you’re doing pliés). The leg and abdominal sections are especially intense. Requires 1 to 3 lb. dumbbells (or a 3 to 5 lb. weighted “bodyball”) and ankle weights. ©1991. DVD has: Chapter menus, Narrow screen.

Karen Voight's Great Weighted Workout

Very Effective
I have had this in VHS format for years and glad it is now available as a DVD. I hadn't used it for a while because I had been using workouts with heavier weights (Kelly Coffey-Meyer is a favorite) but recently read that as we get older (I am 59) it is better to use lighter weights; according to Tracy Anderson 3 pounds max. This is a great workout for three pound weights and the weighted ball. It is very thorough and yet fun, too. It is long so I like to do it on a day when I have more time. Her instructions are clear and easy to follow. I feel like it is very effective; all the muscles are worked thoroughly. I like this one very much. - posted by Donna on 3/15/2013
A Keeper
I have had this DVD forever. It has survived several purges of my hundred-plus collection. I just couldn't let it go, even though I rarely used it. I used to kill myself with this workout with 3- to 5-pound weights and a 4-pound weighted ball. I didn't use it for a while, but kept it because of fond memories of "the burn." I recently began working out with 1.5-pound weights and decided to give "The Great Weighted Workout" a try with lighter weights. Wow. This workout rocks even with light hand weights, 1-pound ankle weights and a 2-pound weighted ball. The post-workout soreness shows that it works. It's moved back into my regular rotation. Please buy this DVD. It's a classic. - posted by Lilly on 1/29/2013
Voight has it right!
Karen's videos were what changed the definition of my body 10 years ago. Her workouts are challenging and clearly made to cut your body. Movements are defined, using, for the most part, slow moving motions that ensure you maintain proper posture while utilizing your muscles to the max. She has a professional personality without being 'giddy' which I appreciate. - posted by Deborah on 11/29/2012

Love the upper body workout
I almost wore out my VCR of this workout; so I ordered the DVD. Never get tired of the smooth moves that work several muscle groups at once. The upper body workout is my favorite. I love Karen's teaching style. Enjoyable, precise and safe for all levels. Excellent workout! - posted by Valerie on 4/16/2012
Had to replace!
I love this work out so much. I've used it for years on a VHS tape (yes you read that right!)that I finally had to replace it with the DVD. If Karen Voight can't get you in shape no one can! - posted by Pam on 1/26/2012
My Favorite Video
I've been doing The Great Weighted Workout for 15 years and still love it. Her cuing is excellent. Her style is upbeat. The results are incredible. Some of her exercises are slightly modified from the traditional. I found her exercises more comfortable and effective than the traditional. This work out is super-tough for the intermediate exerciser. Love it! - posted by Katherine on 6/23/2011
Great instructor
I wore out my DVD and was pleased to find it was still available on CD. The upper body workout is the best! I am at an advanced level and still find this to be a challenge. - posted by leslie on 3/18/2011
Older than I thought
A good workout, but dated. It appears to have been produced a while ago, judging by the attire the men are wearing, which I find odd/distracting. All dvds's should be dated in the description so you will know how old they are. I think it should have been discounted. - posted by Liz on 3/3/2011
Fantastic
Having been very busy for the past three years with two babies, I decided it was time to get back into shape. I've had the VHS(?) version of this workout for years...just bought the CD. When I was the leanest I ever was, this is one of the videos I used. I think it works every muscle in the body! It certainly will leave you feeling a bit sore the next day. If you are just starting back to exercise (like I am) be forwarned that this is listed as an advanced tape. Use the lightest of weights and don't try to push yourself too hard, at first. (I didn't and my knees hurt for a few days after having used too-heavy ankle weights. Yes, the "exercise costumes" look a little funny for today's standards...and the production quality is...well, not as good as her newer videos. Still, Karen is a wonderful instructor and this workout promises to get you back into shape! - posted by Julie on 2/25/2011

Reading a Time Graph

Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
