Time graph for Karen Voight's Firm Arms and Abs

Exceptionally well-designed with superb cuing. The 1992 IDEA Fitness Instructor of the Year, Karen has a friendly, no-nonsense approach that is both motivating and professional. A challenging upper body program, it features resistance, contraction and controlled motion. You’ll work your entire upper body with curls and flies (all followed by a very well-deserved stretch). The abdominal toning uses curl variations and “quick” ab roll-ups. Includes modifications to increase the intensity as you get stronger. Requires 2 to 5 lb. dumbbells; a step or weight bench is suggested. Upbeat jazz-type music. Includes a short ab-toning instructional segment. ©1991. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Karen Voight's Firm Arms and Abs

Back to an old friend!
This as the first KV tape I bought, back in 1995. Just pulled it out again for fun and wow, I forgot what a great workout it is! Sure, it's dated and Karen isn't as loose as she is now, but it's short and intense and the exercises are really effective. I did it with my 5-pound weights and switched to an 8-pound when she said to put both weights in one hand. You can really feel it in your triceps and chest. The cueing is superb....to the point where my 8-year-old daughter made a pair of dumbbells out of tinker toys and was able to follow right along. The ab workout is terrific, really killer oblique moves. It was great to come back to this. - posted by Sue on 6/1/2009
Excellent!!
This is a wonderful workout. It is an older DVD, but fabulous. You will work every area of your arms and feel it the next day. The ab workout is very thorough. I always enjoy working out with Karen. She is an inspiration. - posted by Nikki on 9/3/2008
Never let down
It doesnt matter how old the video is, how cheesy the clothes are, when you get down to it, Karen is the best. Her cue-ing is on track. This video is no departure from her regular flawless instruction. I feel this in my arms and chest each time I use it. I am a big fan of Gin Miller so ignored Karen for the first 10 years of my work out life. I found Karen after getting bored with The Firm and tired of waiting for Gin to come out with something new. I am so happy I found her. I buy any I can get my hands on, especially after checking them out here. I am never let down and this video from the past but a new box is no exception. - posted by Tenia on 6/1/2008

AN OLDIE BUT GOODIE FROM KAREN
Good workout; I do videos each morning and look forward to this one in the rotation. - posted by Sara Goldenberg on 4/18/2007
A tape that I have used for years...
This is truly a video that I have nearly worn out from using it off and on for probably ten years. I do use the video in a slightly different way than Karen had intended as I tend to use only pieces of the workout. The arms section is a classic overall workout for toning arms quickly. It is well instructed and a great add on to a cardio day as the arms section is about 15 minutes long. Whenever I fall off my exercise bandwagon and I need to get back in shape -- this video comes out and my arms show results quickly. I also like the ab section as an alternative to the usual crunches -- but I usually have this video cued up for the arms segment and do the video immediately following a cardio video. - posted by Annette on 2/5/2007
Good, all-purpose workout
This can be as hard, or as easy as you make it--all a matter of weights used. Fabulous upper body work. - posted by Candace on 1/26/2006
Good Arm Toning
I disagree with some of the reviews that say this is a beginner workout (at least for the arm portion). I use 8 and 10 lb. dumbells and I can feel the fatigue. I use this occasionally at the end of a 40 min. cardio work out. If you are primarily into weight lifting I wouldn't recommend this one, because it obviously isn't long enough. This is a great add on for a long cardio work out. I think it gets the job done. I don't care for the ab section. - posted by Cam on 11/10/2003
Great ab builder
I got this video when it first came out ages ago. It was the only abs video that didn't hurt my back. The explanation of form is excellent, and it balances the abs with a couple back exercises. It sure made my abs sore! I remember pausing it for frequent breaks before I worked up to doing the whole 15-min workout. I did it many times a week for years & never got bored with it, probably because it's short, focused & keeps moving. It no longer makes my abs sore, but it's great for core maintenance. If it were available on DVD, I'd buy it again in the new format. The newer KV tapes, with the moody lighting, the dias, the industrial/prison bars decor or the bigger boobs just don't convince me to update. (The Arms section of the video, by the way, I never did much, because I wanted to be outside on my bike as much as possible. It does teach good form & fundamentals. Once you master the form, though, I'd use heavier weights than Karen does.) - posted by juliee on 9/2/2003
Great intro to weights
I used this a few years ago as an introduction to weights. I loved it! It helped me lose nearly 100 lbs! But now that I've advanced, I find it a little slow and boring. But if you're new to weights, Karen is a fabulous instructor and you'll get your form down pat. Plus you can increase the weights to challenge yourself. But if you're intermediate or above, you'll probably be a little bored. - posted by Amy on 8/17/2003
Good for beginners
This is not a very exciting video; however, it would be great for a beginner who would like to learn basic muscle toning using light weights. It can, of course, be modified for a more advanced exerciser; but there are better tapes out there for those of us who want a tougher workout. I use to do this tape quite frequently back when I was green. Karen is a no nonsense, precise instructor, and stresses proper form throughout. - posted by Rox on 5/16/2003

Reading a Time Graph

Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
