Certified instructor description: Kathy’s usual straight-forward, friendly style in a comprehensive, all-on-the-bench program. The long-duration aerobics are perfect to really burn fat, then you’ll shape your body with a precisely structured toning segment. The aerobics aren’t dancy, but the combinations get progressively more intense as the program continues. Kathy adds lots of variety, both for the arms (e.g. curls, claps, bow and arrows) and legs (e.g. repeaters, lunges, turn-steps). Features superb transitions and precise cuing. Requires 1 to 5 lb. dumbbells for toning. ©1992. DVD has: Chapter menus, Narrow screen, Close captions.

Kathy Smith's Step Workout

Oldie but Best for Older Exercisers
Wonderful for the mature stepper. It is easy on the knees and joints but a great cardiovascular workout! - posted by Marcia on 6/13/2013
strait step
I got this Step DVD because I mustn't do high impact anymore. I did my Amy Dixon's two Breathless DVDs, following the low impact modifier, and did not raise my heart rate much at all. With this Step DVD I was able to work up a good sweat and heart rate. Yes it's dated, she 'whoops' on it, and it starts slow but I can live with these things. I enjoyed it and am happy it was still available to buy! - posted by JuliaV on 6/6/2013
All-time fave
I've been loving this workout video since the mid-90's and have not tired of it. I will agree the warm-up runs a bit too long (can be a workout in itself if you're just tired) so sometimes, I fast-forward through it and get to the meat of the workout. I always get great results with this step routine and am surprised I haven't worn the tape out!!! I am switching to a disc so that I don't have to worry about it. This workout is like my security blanket and I'd be "lost" without it. ;) - posted by Shannon on 5/4/2013
Good Old School Workout!!
I am constantly looking for "straight" cardio workouts. And I wanted a basic Step Video that is not too dancy.. I live on the 3rd floor and don't want to "stomp" too much. This one fits the bill. You can tell its old school, because the warm up goes on forever. Too long for me. But it's good work out, I break a good sweat and its a fat burner. It took me a minute to get back in the step groove but I'm going to use this for a while to drop some body fat. - posted by Nicky on 4/30/2013
Still a great workout
This video may be old school, but I love it! It still produces results. - posted by Sarah on 3/21/2013
Classic
I have been trying to get back into step; most of my workouts were in the VHS format and it is not cheap to purchase the DVDs. I was driven to this purchase based on the timeless process and then was pleased I made the purchase. BASIC and easy to follow step with limited fancy foot work for people with two left feet like me. Great cardio followed with a tone session using weights. I get a kick out of the 80's style exercise clothes -- glad that is in the past :). do not leave this workout in the past it will get your heart pumping! - posted by Deb on 2/21/2013
VHS to DVD
I have had this video on VHS for years. It has always been one of my favorites and I am happy to now own it on DVD - posted by Linda on 2/3/2013
Great workout - with a little practice...I can easily get through this video.
I am a beginner but found that I can keep up with this video more than 50% of the time. Well enough it did't discourage me at my beginning stages. I just walked it out as well as I could. - posted by Lynn on 2/1/2013
An Oldie, but Goodie
I had this video on VHS. I really like this workout and wanted to have it on DVD. I was so happy to find it on Collage Video. I love the selection of videos available and plan to purchase more. - posted by Susan on 12/20/2012
Great Step Video
I originally purchased this as a video in the 90's and now I've replaced that copy with this DVD version. This is the best step workout ever. It has beginner, intermediate, and experienced levels. It has seperate sections for toning and strength building. Best of all it has Kathy Smith and not some hyperactive ultra cheerleader. Highly recommended!!! - posted by Candis on 11/29/2012

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.
sample time graph
Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Narrow screen
X
When played on a widescreen TV, this program will show black bars on the left and right sides. On an older 4x3 ratio TV, it will fill the entire screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
