Time graph for CIA 9702: Step, Kickbox & Funk

A very dynamic instructor in an all-cardio program that’s filled with variety. The extra-long aerobics keep you burning fat while the movement diversity keeps you motivated and having fun. Janis Saffell never slows down between sections — you just flow from one exercise type to the next (and finish with a well-deserved tai chi cooldown). You’ll start with step classics cleverly cued with little stories to remind you of the move sequences (e.g. “Jack disses Jill”). Next, the kickboxing ranges from individual jabs and kicks to a complete series of self-defense moves. Finally, you’ll get down with south beach slam funk. Some vocal music. ©1997. Comes in a plain white box.

Great Workout
Ok, I really AM an Aerobic Queen, and if you like Christy Taylor, Patrick Goudeau and Rob Glick, you will completely enjoy this vid. If you are advanced enough to follow Janis, you will be sweatin' like crazy. If you are not breaking a sweat, then the choreography is too difficult for you. The step theater is fun and interesting. The kickboxing is great, although I don't prefer it. The last routine is low intensity and easy if that's what you are in the mood for for your workout. ok! - posted by Heidi on 3/9/2005
Advanced Choreography
The step section defintely takes time to learn--about 10 tries for me to get it all the way through. The kickboxing doesn't get going intensity-wise until about 10 minutes in. The funk section is also a challenge to learn. I'm still working on it. But I do have fun when I do this workout. - posted by Steph on 6/14/2004
I like this one, too!
There's a workout for every mood and energy level I have. In fact, I just finished it. I came home from work feeling lethargic and moody and now I have more energy than I know what to do with. Love the kickboxing segment! - posted by Allison on 8/20/2003
Not good
I did not enjoy this tape at all. I've taken Janis Saffell classes in person, and have tried a few of her tapes, and I just think she needs to realize that we are not all broadway dancers. I have pretty good rythem, but I just can't follow her hopping and dancing all over the room. - posted by Elaina on 4/5/2003
pass
I do not like this video. I ended up returning. The moves if I remember correctly were kind of confusing. Plus, your heart rate never went up. At least mine didn't. Honestly, I'd pass..CIA 9809 is much better.. - posted by Rebecca on 1/11/2003
Not a good workout
I would not recommend this video to anyone who works-out on a regular basis. The instructor is likeable but, the intensity is just not there. I was very disappointed with the kickboxing and funk segments, both of those segments are useless as a workout. I hope to see the format again with better choreography and with more intensity. - posted by Lynda on 6/12/2002
challenging, but cheesy
I have had to try this video five times in order to get the feel for it. The benefit is that you get a whole lotta workout for your money, and the variety is nice for different workout days. However, the only section that I wouldn't feel embarrased to be seen doing would be the cardio kickbox. The Master step theatre is an interesting idea to help you remember the moves, but you definitely need to be an advanced stepper or dancer to get these moves down. You need lots of practice. Fun, but not so much of a sweat. The funk workout definitely isn't much of a workout, but there are some cool moves. Too bad you end up grimacing at half of them because Janis looks goofy. In general, I like the easy kickbox section. However, the funk aerobics is useless if you want any kind of a burn. I wouldn't recommend this video to anyone unless you want to learn a few new dance/step moves. - posted by Tracey on 5/31/2002
Good instruction, Creative, Fun and Challenging!
I love this tape. It has 3 parts (which is good to do separately as you please or if you're advanced do all 3): 1st the step choreography is challenging but fun. She combines dance moves with the step part, and my intensity was up the whole time. She cues all the time, using a story to help you remember what's next. However, the video mirrors your moves and that's what makes it complex. It took me some time to get the mirrored moves that go around the step. 2nd part, KICKBOXing, was fun, challenging and different. It's different because she uses various motions combined with the kicks and punches. The 3rd part, is the part I don't like doing because it's kinda complex, and some moves are ridiculous. It's lower impact than the rest of the tape, but kinda fun too. Overall, I think Janis is a great, energetic, fun instructor who knows what she's doing and the tape is fun yet intense. - posted by Ang on 5/20/2002
Great Plateau Buster
I'm an advanced exerciser. I work out 6 days a week. I do the FIRM, yoga, ballet and aerobics. this tape was a breath of fresh air for me as with all the CIA series because of the variety. I enjoyed all three sections. The step because of the callenging choreography. The kickbxing because it raises your heart rate and the funk because for once in my life, I felt like a dancer. Janis Saffel has a pleasant personality which makes her very likable and easy to follow. One has to be patient wih this video because it is for advanced exercisers, so anyone who uses this tape should ot become frustrated and give themselves time to learn the steps. Personally I do each section first then follow with either a strength training or yoga tape, that way you on't become so bored or tired. Overall I give this tape an A - posted by Millicent on 3/31/2002
this is not a workout!!
I have been working out for over 20 years, 6 days a week, high, low, step, walking, biking, stair climbers, etc. I recently started buying videos because I work out at home now. This was the worst experience trying to break a sweat that I have ever had. It was not challenging in any way except maybe mentally because she does not repeat anything long enough for you to get it and then she goes on dancing to something else....I tried the step a couple times and also the kick boxing and did not even try the funk. I am sending this tape back. - posted by Melanie Lamb on 2/27/2002

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.
sample time graph
Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
