Time graph for The Firm: Total Body Fat Blaster

The moves, look and intensity level of the original classics. It’s a great mix of their legendary aerobics-blended-with-toning exercises (e.g. aerobic-paced, very basic step or floor cardio with the increased intensity of upper-body dumbbell work). The three master instructors continuously vary/intermix the tempo and body-part emphasis to work every muscle in its most efficient manner. Excellent cuing, smooth transitions and upbeat, instrumental music (sometimes with a drum/tribal feel). Requires at least 2 sets of dumbbells; a workout dowel is suggested. They use a 10" and 14" step-box; a regular step also works. ©1998.

The Firm: Total Body Fat Blaster

Old but good
Allie always leads a good workout. This is a bit dated, but sometimes it's nice to be taken back a few years to the "good old days" of aerobics. It's a nice addition to my Firm collection. - posted by Amy on 5/24/2010
Long time favorite!
I have had this workout (on VHS!) since it was first released in 1998. Twelve years later, it is still one of my favorite workouts! I do wish the DVD was chaptered, though. I often repeat certain segments, or the entire cardio portion, to make the workout an hour long. The choreography is not tricky, but interesting enough to keep you from getting bored. Like all Firm cardio workouts, this is comprised of 3-5 minute segments, rather than one long cardio routine. I prefer this, as it keeps my interest up and keeps my heartrate up even while it recovers from the plyometric segments. - posted by Jane on 4/2/2010
Oldie but a Goodie
I really like this workout. IT is dated yes. I know a lot of people have a hard time looking past that but the workout itself is good. It uses basic moves to give a really good workout. It is not a hard core full out workout but it will get your heart pumping. - posted by Amanda on 3/21/2010
A little dated but a favorite
This is from 1998, but it's still a very good and fun workout. It's not super-intense, but it's great for intermediate days when you just want your workout to be done and not drag on with boring music and moves. Very good cuing and music, lots of variety. Much better than the new Frim releases. - posted by Letitia on 6/20/2009
Good, Fun Cardio
I'm just getting back into serious exercising and am sticking with the Firm since I've always had good results with them. I was a little unsure about this workout because of its so-so reviews and rating. I've done it a few times, and I really like it. It's great for me cardio-wise, I'm able to maintain my mid target (keep in mind, I'm still just at low intermediate)through the aerobic section which is just what I want a couple of times a week. Not much toning, but that's not what I use it for. I will admit that it seems dated, but that didn't make it any less fun. This is a good workout for me. - posted by Leslie on 7/10/2008
Dated Workout
I really like Allie DelRio and was excited to own another video in which she was the instructor. I was very disapointed when I did this workout. The moves are dated and the workout had more high impact "Jane Fonda era" aerobics than I expected. The DVD Package Design is from 2003, but I am certain this workout was filmed prior to that. I love The Firm, but I will definitely not do this workout again - particularly when there are so many current, and better videos from which to chose. - posted by Shari on 2/25/2008
Beginner level
It's a good video, well cued and fun choreography, but it isn't an Intermediate level work out. Better for beginners. - posted by Kris on 1/29/2008
FUN AND EFFECTIVE
this is one of my favorite firm workouts. i enjoy the moves that are implemented as you work on different areas ranging from cardio to toning and you do have fun. the best segment for me is the back exercises done with the step and the ab work. you can feel how it works your body and you get to chose the intensity on each move - posted by HELEN on 1/6/2008
Nice workout!
This is a good cardio workout. It doesn't include as much toning as most Firm workouts do, and you can use light weights. There's a good variety of cardio segments: jumping jacks, hops, plyo-jumps, low-step, high-step combos, etc. The choreography on the step portions still trips me up a bit after doing the workout a dozen or so times. I like the back exercises at the end, which most workouts don't give you. The abs workout is unusual and tough. Very nice workout all around. - posted by Lilly on 8/28/2007

Too Much Fun
This is the only FIRM I own prier to the year 2000 that I can actually do. It is fun and I love the leads. I am glad that I bought this DVD. It works me out in ways that I need to be worked. It kicks my butt from start to finish! - posted by Emily on 3/19/2007

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
