Certified instructor description:
It’s designed to “break through” any weight loss plateau with precisely-structured cardio level variations (plus a body-sculpting routine to build lean muscle). The beautiful outdoor scenery and Kathy’s friendly cuing make this a “fun to do anytime” workout. Each rising-and-falling workout “wave” flows through five stages: easier, harder and very challenging aerobics, then recovery and muscle toning. You get two waves — do them separately or in sequence depending on your schedule and weight-loss goals. Besides the designed-in intensity changes, Kathy shows lots of optional modifications that let you customize your own program. Requires 3 to 8 lb. dumbbells. ©2000. (54 min.). Kathy Smith's Fat Burning Breakthrough

I really liked this
I had this work out since its release and have since "upgraded" to dvd! I feel that its an effective fat burner as well as toner. You can put in exactly what you want back...I always go for it and never finish dissapointed! Its definitely one of my most used workout's and I have a TON! A plus is that its pretty quick and you can do one or two segments so time isn't an issue with this one! - posted by Nina on 6/20/2007

Too Many Step Moves
First - I am not a big Kathy Smith fan. I am not an advanced Step person, and so this dvd was not a good match for me. I am not dense, I just couldn't keep up when she says "let's start from the beginning" and then doesn't really start at the beginning or says "lets do that routine again" but only does half of it. Apparently I am just a boring person who would like to do Step aerobics with just a few moves that I know that I can do and keep up with. I prefer Chris Freytag, someone that who is not so hyper and I can actually keep up with. - posted by M.T. on 4/16/2007
Makes you sweat!
I really enjoy working out with this video. Kathy's cues are clear and her energy is motivating. The time commitment is doable with a busy schedule and three kids! I feel like I'm sweating and burning fat hours after my work out. Thanks Kathy! - posted by Leslie C. on 4/6/2007
surprisingly good workout
I thought this was a fun fast paced solid intermediate workout. The step portion is doable for beginner to advanced. The weight portion was very basic. I try to do aerotone per week and the days I concentrate on weights I do Jari or Cathe so I didn't mind the light routine. The ab portion was thorough and the stretching was adequate. The scenery was beautiful. I didn't care that Kathy mis cued I was still able to follow the routines. She is a little goofy but I think she provides a solid workout - posted by jf on 1/27/2007
Fun, challenging, but doable workout
This is an excellent workout to push yourself to the next level of fitness. It's very adaptable for me from when I've gotten out of shape to when I'm at my best fitness level (intermediate-beginner to advanced-intermediate is the range I work in and this video is always appropriate). I think this would work as an advanced workout too if you do all the pop-ups and leaps Kathy suggests. - posted by Kay on 1/21/2007
Solid intermediate workout
One of my favorite things about this workout is the outdoor setting - it's nice to look at on cold winter days in New Hampshire! :) That said, this is a good workout, perfect for beginners looking to transition into the intermediate level. Advanced exerciser won't be challenged, but it's a good workout to do on light days. My only complaint is that Kathy's voice is a little too high pitched and loud in this video, so I just turn down the volume a bit. ;-) - posted by Barbara W on 1/14/2007
Great Workout For Step or Floor Aerobics
This workout can be done successfully on the step or floor aerobically. What a concept to be able to choose to do this on the step or not. This is a very complete total body workout. The cardio will get your heartrate up and break your plateaus. The weight section will give you a quick tone and the abs section is very thorough. The cooldown very relaxing. Kathy does not holler in this workout as she does in LWTLW 1. The outdoor scenery couldn't be more perfect. What a wonderful way to work out. The crew includes Madeleine Lewis who has choregraphed 21 of Kathy's workouts. It also includes Robin from Madeleine's "Get Moving" workout. All are having a wonderful time. You will definitely feel worked out after this workout. And since this workout is so well chaptered (warm up, cardio only, weights only, abs or cooldown) being so versatile to where you can do the cardio on the step or not it is a keeper. A Must Have!!! - posted by NA/AWA on 8/22/2006
Kathy Smith always awesome!
I have just about every KS video and DVD she ever made. KS videos have kept me fit for almost 20 years I don't know what I would have done without her. This tape is definitely what I would call advanced in intensity (the cardio portion)but not in choreography. The toning sections are about intermediate level. I absolutely love, love the abdominal and cool down sections, they are fantastic for days I am pressed for time. If you want an aerobic challenge the 3rd levels of these aerobic sections are killers. - posted by Kathy on 7/4/2006
Too Much Lunging, Boring
I bought this video a long time ago, and I've done it maybe three times. I like a lot of Kathy's workouts, but this one is repetitive and there are very long lunging series at the end of each aerobics section. I think there are more fun, creative ways to get your heart rate up and I am not motivated by the thought of having to do a million lunges, so I never do this one. I like the Kickboxing workout as a fun way to burn calories! - posted by on 2/3/2006

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Narrow screen
X
When played on a widescreen TV, this program will show black bars on the left and right sides. On an older 4x3 ratio TV, it will fill the entire screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
