Another Excellent Firm Tape
This tape is part of the original Firm series of videos (before the trademark was sold). As other reviewers have indicated it is a split workout, one part upper/ABS and one part lower body. The splits can be done individually or together as one long workout. This is an excellent tape. I think both segments are effective and provide a good workout....in traditionally Firm style. You also get the benefit of doing a shorter workout on days when you are pressed for time. I can only recommend this tape. It is excellent. - posted by Cheryl on 8/4/2006
Great
I agree with the other reviewer about being disappointed with the newer Firm workouts. The Firm workouts made either during or prior to 1999 are better, longer, more interesting workouts. I have used the Firm since they came out and I keep hoping for new workouts that I can enjoy as much as the older ones but they are always disappointing. I also wish they would go back to the old mansion sets, I hate their boring new sets. I have read many reviews about the firm that people are looking for more cardio. The whole point of the firm is that you need to do weight training and cardio. The older Firm workouts always had an explaination of why their workouts are better, maybe they need to add that information in again. - posted by Stacy on 10/26/2005
Very Good
I've been disappointed with the Firm videos in the last few years, but love their earlier ones. This one is based on the older ones with the mansion set and instructors who are not annoying. There are true cardio intervals interspersed with the toning. I agree with a previous review that there aren't enough arm exercises in the Upper Body portion. But overall, there is a lot of variety to keep you interested because it contains edits of different instructors and styles. Overall, you get a very good workout, especially for the intermediate exerciser. - posted by Lynn on 10/26/2005
Lower body good, upper body a waste of time
I really like the lower body segment of this video. For just 25 minutes you get a lot of bang for your buck, a great workout for when you are really short on time. Not as thrilled about the upper body segment. If you want to do both parts at once fine, but as others have said the upper body segment doesn't stand alone as well as the lower body segment. The cardio portions are too easy and I barely broke a sweat. Meanwhile you can find better upper body workouts in several Firm videos, Super Body Sculpting for one. - posted by April on 2/7/2004
I love it!
I love this video! It's great because I can break it up into 2 workouts. Instead of doing an hour, I can alternate lower body one day and upper the next. It's great for busy people who want a great, fun workout! - posted by Michelle on 12/2/2003
Perfect for short days
As a Firm user since 1991, I like the flexibility of this tape. It's perfect for days when time is tight, or can be used as a warm up for run or hike. I occasionally do both sections together, but more often use just one of the splits. The lower body portion stands alone, but I think the upper body portion is very easy, especially by Firm standards. Even so, I find myself using this tape at least once a week. It's a great one to have in any workout collection! - posted by Beth on 8/20/2003
I really don't like it.
When i first reviewed this tape i was very positive, but on second thought, it is a disappointment. It is edited from Super Cardio and Super Sculpting, but the selections they made were not my favorites. - posted by Robin on 5/13/2003
Good Workout But Caution Ahead!
As per the other reviews, this is indeed a great cardio workout. The only caveat I have to add is that the stretches at the end for the legs are very inadequate. Be sure to do some stretches for your quads/hamstrings and calves at the end on your own. The curtsy dips and lunges can be hard on your back and offer no additional benefit then just doing basic lunges and dips, so unless you're very strong, avoid these. I will also add that this tape has a lot of high impact moves, even when the instructor tells you it's low impact. Thanks! - posted by Wendy on 4/14/2003
Great fun, great workout
I just had to add one more positive review for this workout - I love it! It's easy enough to follow pretty well the first time even if you haven't previewed it, but it still gives you a good overall workout. The music is fun, the exercises are good, and I like the balance of weights with aerobics. The time goes by quickly, and it's nice to have the option of doing everything at once or splitting it into two workouts. I started my Firm workouts with the Ab/Cardio/Body Sculpt set, but find myself liking the older tapes better than the new ones - maybe because they seem to challenge me more. This is certainly one of my favorites! - posted by Anne on 3/23/2003

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Narrow screen
X
When played on a widescreen TV, this program will show black bars on the left and right sides. On an older 4x3 ratio TV, it will fill the entire screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
