Time graph for Shaping Up with Weights for Dummies

You’ll learn and practice twelve proven body-sculpting moves; each one is taught in an easy-to-learn/easy-to-follow style (just like the “Dummies” books). From squats and one-arm rows to push-ups and ab curls, it’s structured like a personal trainer workout session — 12 repetitions per set, two sets per segment, then a soothing stretch. Tracy York emphasizes careful form and effective technique (“remember, don’t swing your weights…”). She also shows how to modify the routines for increased intensity as you get stronger. During the workout, a split-screen format is often used to explain terms and even destroy some exercise myths (e.g. “no, ab workouts won’t eliminate ’love handles’”). ©2000. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Shaping Up with Weights for Dummies

Great for beginners
This was my first tape using dumbbells. I really liked the instructor. She explains everything very detailed and isn't overly perky like some. I learned a lot about how to position my body and hold the weights without hurting myself. After a while I added in a 3rd set of reps - she does explain everything so it moves pretty slow, but with adding in an extra set of reps I still get a great workout. Highly recommended for beginners wanting to learn correct form. - posted by Teresa on 5/31/2008
Outstanding workout
This video will provide you with a comprehensive workout regardless of fitness level. (Modifications are demonstrated for more and less advanced fitness levels). Motivating leader demonstrates great form throughout. A winner! - posted by Faith on 8/24/2007

Didn't Break a Sweat
I selected this video because it was a staff favorite. I was disappointed in that I didn't break a sweat after 45 minutes, it was not challenging and it just relaxed me enough to go to sleep. Which is good, but not what I expected. - posted by Marian on 3/27/2007
Great explanation of form and Technique but...
Too much time is wasted between sets. This video is 45 minutes long and should have way more exercises than it does. I don't feel like they should have added squats, and lunges because they don't work my upper body. There are better videos out there. Try Leslie Sansone's short cuts Upper Body or Tamilee Webb's I want those arms for a more effective and shorter workout. - posted by Tania on 7/29/2006
Good explanation of technique
As others have said, Tracy spends a ton of time explaining each move and after your first time through, the workout progresses at a too-slow speed. But she explains exactly how to do each move so very, very well. I love her attention to form and technique. Just keep your remote handy so you can fast forward and be patient - this is a great workout for someone who wants to use weights safely and effectively. I feel now that I've done this, for the first time I really understand how to use weights. - posted by Marianne on 12/29/2005
Wasted Time While Exercising
As most reviewers pointed out, this is good the first few times to learn the technique. After that, when I use it I have to do jumping jacks or run in place during all the talking (i.e. demonstration of each new move) in order to not get completely discouraged. I would not have purchased this video if I had known how slow the workout would end up being. - posted by on 8/25/2004
Keep your remote control near by...
...so you can fast forward past all the talking!!! Even when going through the video for the first time the talking is to much! I plan on learning the moves and just ditch the video tape all together. Maybe increase the reps as I increase in strength. Problably could have bought a book rather than the video huh - posted by Lady Cordial on 6/10/2004
She goes too fast
Tracy York does an excellent job describing what you need to do to do each exercise correctly and then asks you to join in a practice rep which she does very slowly. Then she speeds through each set of exercises. The voice-over says not to rush through the excercise and that's exactly what she does. I need to go slower than she does. - posted by Linda on 8/31/2003
Excellent, Motivating Weight Workout
I love this video. Got it out of the library and now plan to purchase from Collage. I will get some light weights and let my teenage daughter use this video. She'll get a good workout and learn good technique as well. Tracy York's body type is similar to mine, so it's motivating to see what I might look like if I keep on working! - posted by Judy on 7/22/2002
Good for one time
This tape is good for one time - just to learn proper technique. After that, it is slow and boring. It should include another tape that takes you through the entire workout without the long, drawn-out instruction. And, only 12 exercises? Tracy York is a pro, and knows so much more than this tape allows. - posted by LAS on 7/9/2002

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
