Certified instructor description: Focused body-sculpting routines featuring an endless variety of upper-body toning moves. You get lots of push-ups and bicep curls, pectoral flies and bent-over rows … this program works your entire upper body (plus some tough abwork). You can target just your upper body with this video or get a total-body workout by alternating this workout with the Firm’s Lower Body Split (their complementary routines work different muscles so you don’t overtrain any one group). You even get a cardio benefit during the toning segments — this program raises your heart rate with fast-paced dumbbell work. Created from previous Firm videos, you’ll work out with nine different instructors on several different sets. Requires at least two sets of dumbbells and a step. A 14" tall step box and a medicine ball is optional. ©1999. DVD has: Chapter menus, Narrow screen.

The Firm: Upper Body Split

LOVE IT!
I DO have the time to workout for an hour+ everyday...and yes, I work full time, and not from home :-). I'm 41, married, child free by choice and I am in love with this series. I'm a Firmie since 1990 and this is the first time I've used the upper/lower split. Traci Long is just a Goddess. The cueing, direction and composition is outstanding. I read one reviewer say this should be called 'push ups and crunches' and I cracked up, and agree. I personally love the dated leotards and museum schtick. Cracks me up. If you can get past that, the bare bones of this workout is this: RESULTS! - posted by Monica on 2/19/2013

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!!!
I really love this workout!!!I think the mix of several instructors is a cool idea!!! and I think that it a very challenging upper body workout. - posted by DawnR on 4/22/2005
HOLY SHoulders!
If you want a serious blow to the shoulders, this workout is the way to go! You really feel the burn in the shoudlers when you use heavy enough weights! I also like that this upper body workout (as well as Lower Body Split) includes cardio and abs as well as upper body; that way, I do not have to go through the hassle of splitting my workouts up and can get a daily workout done in one shot! Needless to say, I would say that these crosstrainers are even better than Upper Body and Standing Legs. This workout has a lot of shoulder work, but it works all of the upper body muscles well. At first, I thought it could use a little more triceps work, but the large amount of pushups in this workout, as well as the challenging tricep kickbacks, make up for that. On that note, I really liked the two sets of 16 pushups done back-to-back. I have been exercising for years, and I am yet to do them (especially all of them!) on my toes! Without a shadow of a doubt, this crosstraining pair, Upper and Lower Body Split, is another winner! - posted by Natalie Beanland on 7/23/2004
ok, but 1 hour of ONLY upper body is a bit too much
Great for spot toning, however to spend 1 hour out of your day JUST for upper body is a bit too long these days. A lot of people just don't have that kind of time in their day to commit to working out only the upper half of the body for 1 hour. And they would still have to do the lower half on another day in order to get a balanced workout. I think if the Firm incorporated this workout with parts from the LBS workout also, and made the compilation 1 hour, then this would be a great workout. - posted by on 3/12/2004
don't recommend!
I have quite a few Firm videos. I got this to add to my collection only to find that I have most of the videos that they used to make this one. When I buy a new video, I Want a NEW video not segments from videos that I already owned. BORING! I traded this in to Blockbuster and got Finding Nemo for my son so I guess it wasn't a total loss! LOL! - posted by Michelle on 12/2/2003
a great longer Firm Upper Body workout
I love the Upper and Lower Body split workouts. I don't have the time to do them as often as I would like though. When I do focus on the split workouts for a few months I do notice a change and feel stronger. The videos are as hard or as easy as you want them to be. I use 5-8-10 pound weights and feel the burn during the workout and I'm sore for a few days after. If it gets too easy, just raise your weights! - posted by kimmie on 9/4/2003
Not advanced
This tape, out of all the Firm tapes I've tried is my favorite. It combines clips from the other tapes into one video. It is good for light weight days because it is very fast paced and you would be advised not to lift too heavy of weights during this video.Like always, the instructors drive me nuts - but that is what I expect from the Firm series. - posted by Jenni McMaster on 8/3/2003
just okay
this workout is okay, and is very balanced, but it is simply not a tough enough upper body workout for an advanced weight lifter. i have been lifting for 6 years, and i would like to see 70 minutes of just upper body work from the firm(no abs or cardio, please!). - posted by liz on 4/11/2003
Not Hard Enough
I didn't feel like I had had a tough workout at the end of this. Maybe it's because we're working smaller muscles, but I barely broke a sweat, and I would not consider myself an advanced exerciser. - posted by Marla on 3/26/2003
Annoying
I have almost all of the Firm videos, and usually like them, but I thought this workout was awful. It tries to do too many things...from abs to cardio to some upper body...I got frustrated waiting for the upper body segments, and didn't feel they worked me out sufficiently. I think their older "Upper Body" workout is much better. - posted by Barbara on 3/9/2003

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
