Certified instructor description: Intense floor aerobics interspersed between challenging muscle toning segments. You’re sure to be motivated by this video’s variety and ever-changing pace (e.g. high-impact/low-impact, fast/slow moves, long/short intervals). Compiled from previous Firm programs, you also get a boredom-busting assortment of instructors, styles, settings and music. The aerobics — all non-step — range from plyo-jumps and bunny hops to grapevines and marches (often using light dumbbells for extra intensity). The toning ranges from pushups and overhead curls to on/off step lunges and squats (they use a tall step-box, a regular step will work). 3 to 15 lb. dumbbells are required; ankle weights and a barbell are optional. ©1999. The Firm: Total-Body Shaping Mix

back to basics
I really like this DVD. I am a fan of the "old firm" and this is just what I was looking for. I get a whole body workout and some cardio in an hour. I am sweating when I am done. I wish there were more of the old firm videos out on DVD! - posted by Lisa on 8/23/2011
My New Favorite Firm DVD
I love this DVD; just did it this morning and was dripping with sweat. I have a lot of the individual DVDs whose "parts" show up in this DVD. I can't say enough positive things about it especially at the price I purchased it. If you like the Firm DVDs (or even if you've never tried the Firm) and you like working hard, you should get this DVD. You wont regret it. - posted by Elaine on 8/11/2011
Love this!
I have been doing the FIRM for years (yes since the very beginning with Susan Harris I am THAT old) and this is one of my favorites. The copy I had I wore out so I bought another. I am a big Tracy fan and have been for years. this is one of their better compilation DVD's - posted by Kathye on 8/4/2011
RIP Anna Benson
This is a great workout! I love it and although it may look dated, the workout has stood the test of time. Anna Benson was a pioneer in the world of video fitness and although she died at a premature age, her touch can be found on any of the classic Firm workouts.....I find the later Firms with all the gimmicks and worthless extras to be a waste of time and money. This DVD is a touch and effective compilation from the original Tri Trainers. - posted by Jennifer on 5/21/2011
Glad I Bought This DVD!
I'm a 49 year old with a grouchy left knee & occasional sciatic nerve issues, but have been a regular exerciser all my life. I wanted a workout with slower pacing, excellent cuing, but still a serious workout--this DVD delivered for me! I use a lower step-bench than shown because of the knee; the workout is helping to strengthen my legs, which in turn is improving the knee! I appreciate the easy-to-follow aerobics because I'm not interested in learning complicated "dancey" moves. For people who like the fast-paced, high-energy experience that seems to be more common these days, then they may not like this DVD; however, for me, it totally ROCKS and is exactly what I was looking for!! - posted by Deb on 3/11/2011
Great Video
If you are familiar with The Firm family of videos, you will love this one too. They have taken parts from various videos and merged them into one good, hard workout. They even threw in a couple of new segments. Well worth checking it out. - posted by Marilyn on 2/17/2011
Love This Workout - Classic Firm!
This is a great compilation workout...taken from many of my favorite earlier Firm videos. It is now in my regular rotation. - posted by Kelly on 4/22/2010
LOVE THIS! Like the original FIRM!
I started working out to the Firm volume 1. Body Sculpting Basics and I also have Volume 3. 4 also for shorter easier days and I love those! Challenging and interesting. I have never bored of them in 20 yrs! (I Hated 2 and 5, seemed to much more beginner tapes. I have tried some other tapes searching for the next level or at least as challenging. I had to give away several videos since I found weak comparisons. I was very excited to find this Tracy Long video! It reminds me of the original Firms in intensity etc.! I couldn't be happier. It keeps my heart rate up and uses the high step (I use a 10 inch box and it works just fine and I am tall) When I do this one I say "YES! This is what I'm talking about! The original Firms they are the best." The warmup is weak and one cardio section with Dale is too but that is small potatoes. Ab section is good though. I also like Cathe's Boot camp and Patrick's Dumb training, that one's a bit easier but up the weights it keeps the heart rate up and I can feel it the next day! - posted by Janet on 7/3/2009
The BEST LONG Firm TOTAL BODY compilation workout
I did this workout yesterday for the first time in about 3 years and it was fantastic! Because I've been doing cardio lately, the cardio segments with the "newer" instructors (Jennifer Carman and Allie Strickland) that were offputting to me years ago (as there is nothing like them in the classic Firm (Volumes 1-6) workouts) are enjoyable to me now. It is 67 minutes of sheer sweat-producing moves that work out your entire body. Firm total body compilation perfection! (Note: If you don't mind the Firm full body compilation workouts and don't have 67 minutes to workout, I suggest either of the two short Firm 3-in-1 Bootcamp workouts--one is about 37 minutes and one is about 42 minutes, and both include cardio segments using a medicine ball. The "third" workout, at 71 minutes, is a combination of the two shorter workouts. However, if you're interested in a longer total body Firm compilation workout, I think that you'd be better off purchasing this 67-minute workout.) - posted by Joy on 7/21/2008
Quick, Sculpting tape
I find this is a good tape that covers all the bases in a short amount of time- if that's what you're looking for this is the tape for you. Tracie Long is one of the best, most accurate, and safest instructors around. - posted by Christine on 1/27/2008

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Narrow screen
X
When played on a widescreen TV, this program will show black bars on the left and right sides. On an older 4x3 ratio TV, it will fill the entire screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
