Certified instructor description: Exquisitely-cued by an IDEA Instructor of the Year, it alternates not-too-dancy cardio intervals with tough toning segments. You’re sure to be energized by Karen’s smooth transitions, award-winning form and uniquely graceful style (somehow she even makes sweating seem elegant). The 7 to 9-minute aerobic sections get progressively more intense from Charlestons and V-steps to jacks and power leaps (often intensified with large limb movements and complementary arm combos). The shorter toning intervals work multiple muscle groups with exercises expressly chosen to not overtrain any one area. The ending floorwork tones your butt and legs along with a special emphasis on your deepest ab muscles. Requires 3 to 5 lb. dumbbells. ©2001. Previously titled "Cardio Strength." Karen Voight's Ultimate Step Circuit

Ultimate Step!
I have been a Karen Voight fan for years and have fully enjoyed the challenge of her new "old school" workout. I work out at my job site gym and since we have no aerobic instructor, Karen has led the way in getting me back into health and fitness. I am getting married in July and will be counting on this video to get me into my wedding dress. Love it! - posted by Lola on 2/7/2013
Just did this one AGAIN this morning :)
I have this on VHS, but still, of all my tapes (and I have probably 30-40 of them, mostly on DVD), still go back to this one and it's always a great workout! I don't agree that there is ANYTHING wrong with the cuing. I am surprised at how much better Karen is at cuing than most instructors. This is a great workout without anything that makes me think I might have to really worry about my alignment or getting injured. Really just a go-to, hard, step circuit workout! It feels like it's done in no time and I always feel like I get a great workout! - posted by Kat on 9/7/2012
Really like this workout BUT the cueing could be better....
I have had this workout for a couple of weeks and I REALLY like it, BUT the one thing that gets me is the cueing. OMG cue a couple of steps ahead. I have other workouts that the instructor cues a couple of steps ahead. I know in this workout Karen would change steps or directions THEN tell you. BUT there are a few times she does tell you ahead of time why cant she do that all the time? I REALLY like this workout, I've just about gotten it down, but I dont do this one everyday,I have a rotation that I do. And she LOVES using the arms. I have another one of her workouts and she does the same thing in it. This one really gets my heart rate up and I sweat. Other than the cueing its great. I hate to complain BUT..... She seems really nice and sweet. But that's why the 4 stars took 1 off for the cueing. Other than that I like it. - posted by Mel.V on 6/9/2012
Still one of the best
I had this workout on a vhs many yrs. ago and loved it then. Got rid of the vhs many yrs. ago and never replaced it until now. Still one of the best all around workouts I have that I never tire of. It has a little bit of everything in it which is what I like in a total body workout. Gets my heart rate up nicely with the step routine then breaks into 3-4 different weight pumping, muscle toning sets. One you will never get tired of doing. Karen as always puts out great choreography as well as cueing. Love this one.... - posted by liz on 4/25/2012
step workout
good workout but a little repetitious. - posted by cindi on 4/19/2012
Disappointing
In the past, I have been a big fan of Karen. Sound instruction, challenging choreography and well cued. This video is totally different than many others. It was not challenging and it was poorly cued. I returned it. - posted by Sara on 3/18/2012
great for everyone
This workout covers all the bases. The step portions can be easily adjusted depending on whether you want high or low impact. I increasingly look for workouts that deliver high intensity with lower impact and this one fits the bill! - posted by Trish on 4/7/2011
Great Workout
I bought this mainly for the step aerobics portion. Short and simple choreography, but a great workout. Really gets your heart rate up! - posted by Felicia on 2/9/2011
Karen Voight's Ultimate Step Circuit
This is a fabulous video. Karen, as always, provides outstanding instruction; the moves are varied and interesting but not too complicated; the mix of aerobics and conditioning is just right. All in all, a great investment!! - posted by rebecca on 12/16/2010
Slow Weights/Fast Step
This is a terrific circuit workout, but for a 5'2" woman using a 10" step, it could be dangerous due to the fast tempo of the music. I fell off the step while doing a tricky over-the-top-while-turning movement, which in itself is a challenge for me: I am not especially coordinated. I lowered my step and incorporated simpler movements in some areas of the program to compensate. The strength training is flawless. Karen works each upper body muscle with the correct amount of reps and sets. She cues with care and attention to proper form and does the reps slowly and mindfully. I like that she includes an exercise for the rotator cuff, as well as the calves (while doing a biceps curl), and throws in some prone low back and buttock exercises. This workout is complete and takes all of my concentration and strength. I feel fabulous when I'm done! I think it can be adjusted for any body and level via the amount of weight and step height used. If not for the too-fast step tempo, I'd give it five stars. - posted by Casey on 12/12/2010

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Narrow screen
X
When played on a widescreen TV, this program will show black bars on the left and right sides. On an older 4x3 ratio TV, it will fill the entire screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
