Time graph for Karen Voight's Ultimate Step Circuit

Exquisitely-cued by an IDEA Instructor of the Year, it alternates not-too-dancy cardio intervals with tough toning segments. You’re sure to be energized by Karen’s smooth transitions, award-winning form and uniquely graceful style (somehow she even makes sweating seem elegant). The 7 to 9-minute aerobic sections get progressively more intense from Charlestons and V-steps to jacks and power leaps (often intensified with large limb movements and complementary arm combos). The shorter toning intervals work multiple muscle groups with exercises expressly chosen to not overtrain any one area. The ending floorwork tones your butt and legs along with a special emphasis on your deepest ab muscles. Requires 3 to 5 lb. dumbbells. ©2001. Previously titled "Cardio Strength." DVD has: Chapter menus, Close captions.

Karen Voight's Ultimate Step Circuit

It is ok
I used to do this workout back in the day when I was just beginning to get back into shape. It became too easy very quickly. I think the only problem I had with it is that it is to short. It does not keep the heart rate elevated long enough, especially with such short strength segments. If the cardio and strength were longer this may be one I would use in my current rotation- but I think I'll stick to Cathe and Sharon Twombly and Kelly Coffey when it comes to circuit workouts- they have much tougher workouts. - posted by Mandee on 11/5/2008
Good workout
I am not really a fan of Karen Voights, but I did like this workout. If someone else would have done it, I would have been very pleased with it. It gets my hr up and has toning as well, so to me, well worth the hour of work. - posted by Marsha on 10/3/2008
refreshing workout
I did a tough cathe workout yesterday So I pulled this out. I sweated and still felt like i worked out. Face it you cannot do a hardcore workout everyday even cathe made a couple of low impact workouts. So if you still want cardio with some weights and it is a light workout day this fits the bill. - posted by delores on 2/29/2008
Great to Re-visit!
I own the DVD that is the combo with BLT, and I hadn't done the workout in a while. It was my very first step video purchase in 2003, and I loved it back then and found it very challenging. Fast forward to 2007- still challenging! I worked up an amazing sweat and had fun. I always love Karen and wanted to re-recommend this great video to everyone! - posted by Alison on 11/21/2007
Workout is too easy
It really is a great workout but I always keep wishing that it was longer and a little harder. - posted by Margo on 7/12/2007
I really like it
It kept my heartrate up and the steps were challenging but very doable and I felt like I got a good workout with out being killed. I love my Cathe's but this def. has a place in my rotation as well. - posted by on 5/15/2007
Disappointed
I'm really surprised by the DVDs that Karen is releasing. She changed the way we looked at step with Energy Sprint, which, at the time, was one of the most challenging workouts on the market. But, it's been downhill since. While Ultimate Step was okay, it's just too short and easy. I think she may be targeting a different audience. But, it just means that I'm not going to be purchasing anymore of her DVDs. This one just didn't do it for me. - posted by Anonymous on 5/6/2007

Great Workout!
I pulled this one out this morning- just did the 30 min step cardio segment. It is great! It goes by so fast because it is in 3 different segments of coreography. Not too hard or complex at all. I got a great workout. The full circut is great too, but I just did weights with Jari Love ripped to the core yesterday! I am glad I pulled this one out agin! If you like Cathe's basic step and body fusion- this is very comparable to it. - posted by Tracy on 3/31/2007
Love it - Karen is great
I love this one. Karen is great. Her moves aren't too dancey or complex, and yet she manages to be elegant. My dvd of this has options for mixing and matching workouts which is a handy feature for days when you don't want to do the whole thing. All in all a great workout. - posted by Sam from New Zealand on 3/15/2007
SO-SO
While I really liked the stepping routines, even though as others have said Karen's cuing is a little off, I thought the weight sequences were bo-ring. The abs sequence is good but not long enough (I'm used to Cathe). So I just pop the dvd in when I am crunched for time and I do only the cardio option from the menu. - posted by Christie on 1/27/2007

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
