Certified instructor description: Emphasizing balance, control and stability, it’s an intense program that will challenge every muscle. You get Charlene’s enthusiastic/talkative cuing and her experienced/perceptive instruction (e.g. “if you feel your back slipping into extension …”). Intermixing both isolated and multiple muscle-group variations, each exercise is usually followed by a complementary stretch. The moves range from standard ball routines to unique ball-against-a-wall positions and tough unilateral exercises. Using the ball as a comfortable “weight bench,” Charlene also incorporates dumbbells to create effective full-range-of-motion upper-body sculpting. Filmed on a pure white background. Requires 3 to 8 lb. dumbbells. Note: DVD comes in a plain clear-plastic holder. ©2001. (60 min.). DVD has: Narrow screen.

terrible
i had purchased a charlene step video and discarded it as well as this one. She is just too chatty and is too busy talking and explaining. she should change her style and just get to the workout and stop chatting so much! - posted by jill on 2/2/2006
Save the blathering for the intro!
The exercises are good but Charlene spends the first five to ten minutes of the video blathering about the basics--this should have been part of an intro that viewers could opt to skip once they've done the workout a few times (I guess I'm too spoiled with Cathe's DVDs). Charlene's cuing and tips are helpful but the blathering cheats viewers out of a full 30 minute workout. - posted by Beavs on 1/14/2006
Don't waste your money
I have never done any of Charlene's videos but I am sorry I wasted my money on this one. The pace is extremely slow. I did not feel like I got a good workout for the amount of time spent watching the video. I probably could have done the moves in less than half the time had the instructor and her helpers ever shut up! - posted by Laurie on 4/20/2005
Would not recommend
Charlene is not a good instructor. There was no warm up at all. She and her 2 helpers talk amongst themselves like they are alone in someone's basement and are not trying to help the viewer. I have taken several stability ball classes and would not recommend this video to anyone. - posted by Carol Ritchey on 11/11/2004
Not for Beginners
While Charlene explains every move thoroughly as though to introduce you to ball workouts, I wouldn't rate this as a beginning video. The exercises are very challenging and if you're new to working out with a ball, you may get frustrated and give up. I would recommend other videos to introduce yourself to the ball and save this one for when you're ready for a challenge. Like other reviewers have said, because of all the chatter you won't get a full hour workout, but what you do get is very effective (if you can keep up!). - posted by Jennifer on 1/5/2004
I LOVE CHARLENE'S WORKOUTS
I THINK THE TAPE IS GREAT. I "LOVE" CHARLENE'S CHATTER. I'M NOT A FAN OF STRAIGHT FORWARD INSTRUCTOR'S WHO SEEM TO BE ROBOTIC. YOU WON'T FIND THIS WITH CHARLENE. I'M STILL DOING TAPES OF CHARLENE'S WORKOUTS THAT I TAPED IN THE 80'S. I'VE TRIED MANY OTHERS AND ALWAYS GO BACK TO CHARLENE. THE BALL IS NEW TO ME AND ALTHOUGH CHALLENGING AT TIMES, I COULDN'T GET THROUGH IT WITHOUT THE BEST INSTRUCTOR OF ALL TIME. WAY TO GO CHARLENE! - posted by CHRISTINE on 12/3/2003
Women with Balls a killer workout
I am new to using the ball, and this is the first video I have ever used with it. Charlene's excersizes are difficult for first time users of the ball, and her cueing is sometimes confusing. The all white background is ugly, and there is no music to this workout. However, I enjoyed the video because it was challenging to do. I have done other ball videos/dvds since this one, and her excersizes challenge me the most. Also I have noticed a lot of improvement in my thighs/hips area with her toning excersizes. - posted by Leslie on 8/15/2003
I love Charlene
I love this video. It has some unique moves on the ball, and it is challenging. If you want a video that just pushes you through a routine this probably isn't for you, but if you want to learn proper form, to minimize injury, and increase effectiveness this is awesome. I have watched Charlene for years and I love the way she can keep things simple, work you hard, and impart a lot of knowledge all at the same time. - posted by Cheryl on 6/3/2003
Good, if you get past the chattiness
The moves on the ball are challenging, but Charlene talks too much, and for me it was distracting and annoying. She could make her form pointers and educational comments more effective if she used less words. Also, I would prefer for the tape to blend into one single 60 minute routine instead of two 30 minute segments. After I learn the routine, I will hit the Mute button, and play my own music. - posted by Rene on 4/19/2003
Irritating video!
I tried two other videos for fitness ball workouts (by Fitball, both the upper and lower body tapes), and LOVE those tapes and the ball. Unfortunately, in trying to expand my options, I tried this one and hate it! You get about half the length in actual exercise and the balance is annoying chatter and stretching. I will never use this tape again, and wasted my money! - posted by Debra Gibbs on 2/4/2003

Reading a Time Graph

Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
