Certified instructor description:
A very well-produced, very well-cued program. It works your upper body with dumbbells, your lower body with a mix of standing and floor exercises. The workout features the techniques developed by Russian dancer Lotte Berk in the 1940’s (and later taught in her London and Manhattan studios). Each controlled movement has an exact point-of-origin along with an associated stretch (“your workout is not complete without the stretch”). After an extended warm-up, you’ll shape your arms and back with precise dumbbell routines (e.g. small pulses). The lower-body segment includes both standing pliés and unique “knee dancing” exercises (fluid, rolling pelvic movements while you’re kneeling). One instructor always shows easier modifications. Requires 2 to 5 lb. dumbbells. They use a free standing “ballet barre” but a solid, heavy high-back chair would also work for the plié exercises. ©2002. DVD has: Narrow screen.

Did not care for this workout
I bought this after reading some of the great reviews it got and I was completely disappointed in it. It's not much of a workout at all, nor is it at all enjoyable. I didn't care for the instructor, and there really just isn't much to the workout. - posted by Jami on 12/15/2008
just OK
I am an intermediate/advanced excerciser and bought the whole Lotte Burke collection to get back into things after a year-long layoff. I did them in rotation faithfully for 6 months and although I enjoyed the instructors, and the calm tone, I can't say I saw dramatic results. While I looked in shape, this definately did not give me the "wow!" body the instructors have. I now do Tamilee, Gilad, 10 minute solution pilates, Denise Austin pilates, and the Method Target Pilates Plus, all of which have changed my body to the point where people say "Wow, what do you do to look like that?". While this is the best DVD in the Lotte Burke series, and a nice way to get back into things or if you are just starting out, don't expect to look like the fabulous instructors unless you move on to something else. - posted by Sasha on 11/28/2008
excellent workout and an inspiring instructor
I agree with the previous reviewer that this dvd is great. I am very impressed with Barbara, the instructor - she says that she is close to 50 and I would never have known it. This workout has some tough armwork (if you are holding correct form meticulously) and the plankwork and legwork are great as well. The bonus workout is tough! I am really enjoying the Lotte Berk dvds - my favorites of the barre workouts. Highly recommend! - posted by Ali on 7/24/2008
I liked this video
I'm surprised to see some people saying they got or felt nothing after doing this dvd. I'm a hardcore exerciser and I teach dance classes four days a week, so i was shocked to find that my lower abs felt sore after just one use of this dvd! I would say to anyone not feeling anything to check their form, as for letting Suzanne's facial expressions put you off... how petty! Great Toning
I love these series of CD's. I look at those women especially the gal that is 50 years old with that body, wow! These are not works you use a couple of times...small moves big impact if you use them everyday for 3-4 weeks. I only used them here and there got nothing, obviously, but when I got serious and used them religiously. Wow! My body is reshaping itself....I still will use weights for my arms but everything else are the Lotte Berk series...I need more, where are they Lotte Berk Thanks for lifting my melting butt! - posted by Carrie on 10/26/2005
Love these DVD's
I recently received the 4 DVD set in the mail, and have done the Basic Essentials, and Muscle Eats Fat workouts so far. I have to say I enjoyed the Basic Essentials more than Muscle Eats Fat. If you are only going to buy one, get Basic Essentials. This is the only exercise I have done in years. I find it challenging but rewarding. I like that they have 3 people showing the 3 difficulty levels at all times. I have problems with my lower back and tail bone, and have been unable to do Pilates because it aggrivated those conditions. I have to say that these videos actually made my back feel great! I feel like I got a total body workout. I have soreness in muscles I didn't know I had. I'm very pleased with this set. I am recommending the 4 disc set to everyone I know. This video isn't my favorite from the set, but it's still a great workout and it flies by quickly. One thing I noticed with these videos is that you don't realize how hard you are working until you finish and start walking around. Man, my whole body was wobbly :) I feel stronger after only 2 workouts. Highly reccomended! - posted by Nycole on 6/13/2005
I love these workouts. If you don't feel them, you probably aren't doing them correctly. The knee dancing is a killer! If it hurt your knee caps, you are definitely in the WRONG position. My legs shake every time I do these. I've been doing them almost 4 weeks now, 4-5 times per week and have seen definite toning! Not body altering changes, but slow and steady, plus I LIKE them! I know they are not for everyone, and some find the instructors annoying, but they don't bother me. All 4 are such great workouts, who cares if the instructors are a bit annoying! These are such a refreshing change for squate and lunges. I'll take these any day! - posted by on 5/14/2005
Not Worth the Money
I had such high expectations for this video after reading the reviews. I've had the video for about a year and never use it. I thought it was good when I first got it - but after using it a few times I realized I wasn't seeing any results. The weight section isn't anything special and at 10 minutes really isn't going to do much. The standing lower body section is o.k. but I also thought the knee dancing was awkward. If you're looking for your legs to shake, try Karen Voight's Pilates Total Body Training. If you're looking for 10 minute workouts - try Liz Gillies Progressive Pilates. - posted by Kelly Ann on 5/10/2005
Dissappointing
I got this DVD after reading many reviews on the Lotte Berke Method. I love to find DVDs that have challening and unique moves for toning. However, I was very disappointed with this video. I did not find it challening at all and the "knee dancing" segment is dangerous because it puts too much pressure on your knee caps. And also, I found the instructor to be extremely annoying. The Bar Method is a much better production. - posted by Shannon G. on 5/2/2005
excellent
I found this to be a very effective video, especially for the short length of time. It's definitely a nice change from the usual toning moves you see in more conventional videos. My quads were very sore the next day. I'm looking foreward to trying other LB workouts. - posted by jami on 11/11/2004

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
