Certified instructor description: Pure fat-burning aerobics followed by tried-and-true body-sculpting (with great cue-ahead teaching by an IDEA Instructor of the Year). An unusually well-structured program, it’s clear that Karen has consciously designed each movement for a specific purpose. The mostly low-impact cardio fully engages your entire body, not just your legs (i.e. you’re actively working your arms, not just swinging them around). The toning segment begins with proven standing and seated exercises chosen to incorporate both variety and tempo variations (e.g. pulses, holds). Then it’s ab-firming floorwork — an effective mix of Pilates and classic crunches. A superb, no-nonsense workout. Requires 2 to 10 lb. dumbbells. ©2003. DVD has: Chapter menus, Narrow screen.

Karen Voight's Half and Half Workout

Super, A Thorough Workout
I've had this DVD for several years and would sometimes go several weeks without using it. However, in the last month or so, I decided I had fallen into a rut with working out so I've rotated Half and Half back into my regular schedule. The cardio portion feels great to me, lots of great moves I haven't seen anywhere else. Nothing felt awkward or unsafe and it's just a fun routine. At first, the choreography might seem strange but be patient and you will get the hang of it. The weight lifting portion is top notch; I feel like I'm working super hard and working every single muscle. The back/ab/stretch routine is well-rounded. Karen is always my favorite and she did a great job with this one. I don't think you'll be disappointed. - posted by Nicole R. on 2/13/2011
fast paced
Fast for me anyway. I would say the choreography is high moderate maybe even advanced in a few spots. I have done Jazzercise for a long time and this DVD had some quick and not simple dance moves that I will have to practice a lot before I get it so my Jazzercise experience didn't count for much. Not a bad thing at all, just be aware. It will give you something to strive for. It was tough for me to get a good cardio workout at first because I stalled alot trying to get the moves right and keep up. The strength portion is good. - posted by Sharon on 1/26/2011
Wow! I love this DVD!
I just worked out with my new Karen Voight "Half and Half" dvd, and absolutely love it! I didn't even wait for the sweat to dry before writing this review. The cardio segment is challenging and exciting, with the smooth transitions I expect from Karen. The toning segment is very thorough, and so fun I couldn't believe nearly half an hour had passed. The floor work and stretching exercises were calming and rejuvenating. The entire workout was just what the Dr. ordered-literally-with my 40th birthday fast approaching, my doctor suggested adding a toning routine to my cardio. In Half and Half I have found the best of both worlds! - posted by Anna on 9/2/2010
Karen is a good instructor
I have used Karen's tapes for the past 16 years(I am 75 now), and found they are very helpful in keeping me in shape and maintaining my energy level, I just wish you offer more DVD version of Karen's old video tape, such as "with Elle Macpherson". - posted by tzuchen on 7/8/2010
Great beg/inter/light day workout!
Karen is one of my very favorite instructers, and I really like this well-structured workout. The cardio is fun and different, but would probably would not be good if you're looking for something super advanced. The toning is awesome, especially for the legs, and the floor work really gets into my abs and lower back (great for love handles!). This is not toughest workout I own, but I still do it fairly often when I want to get a total body workout but not kill myself (and I can't "kill" myself every workout!). It's lower impact, but not sissy, it's a long workout if you do the whole thing and works your entire body! - posted by Soledad on 2/11/2009
Great Cardio from Karen once Again!
I only have Calorie Burn, the cardio portion of this workout. It's great! There are higher impact options but I love that this workout doesn't jar my joints and is fun, easy to follow, and gets my heartrate up. I'm a solid intermediate in cardio and Karen is one of my go-to gals. Lots of fun, it just flies by. - posted by Elaine on 9/27/2008
No disappointment here!
I really don't understand the negative reviews. I thought this was a great workout. I thought the cardio was cued very well and easy to follow. It was unique and creative, not your usual step touch, grapevine routine. If you put more energy into your workout, you get more out of it, and in my opinion its a clear intermediate workout. The upper body section is a bit short, but you can add more weight or do more reps to feel it a bit more. The lower body and abs section was thorough and very creative. Overall, a well-rounded, get-the-job done workout. - posted by Shelley on 3/8/2008
Half & Half is the newest of my Favorites
I am 57 years old, a College Success story from 1994, am certified by the American Council on Exercise and have been involved with fitness since I was in the 7th grade. I started out with Jack LaLanne, the first and orginal Fitness Guru. I love Voight's Half & Half. There is no lengthy instruction. BOOM! and you are into very interesting, effective and heart pumping aerobics before you realize it. It is simple to modify to intensify. With repetition it gets more fun as you hone your skills. The aerobic portion is over leaving you thinking, "Wow, is it already over?" The weight sections, once again, are interesting and effective and just BAM gets her done. All sections are good to mix and match with your other DVD. - posted by Julia on 3/3/2008
Just OK
I wanted to like this workout, but it was hard to. The cardio was terrible - hard to follow and awkward moves. However, the toning segment was effective and I enjoyed it. - posted by Fran on 1/19/2008
ehh
I had this work out as Get Firm Fast for a long time now. I thought it would be moderately difficult but it wasn't difficult enough. Maybe for beginners, but not for anyone who works out regularly. Also, the Get Firm Fast DVD has no warm up. It just starts with her doing squats. It took me awhile to figure out that my DVD wasn't defective. haha - posted by v on 10/16/2007

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Narrow screen
X
When played on a widescreen TV, this program will show black bars on the left and right sides. On an older 4x3 ratio TV, it will fill the entire screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
