Certified instructor description: Lots of intensity and variety, you get eight step sequences in four blocks of choreography. It’s all very do-able because Marcus teaches the patterns in layers. You’ll learn a move, add to it, modify it and then do the entire series again (so you’re never overwhelmed by choreography). It features all your step favorites, from straddles, hamstring curls and pivots to cha chas, ponies and mambos. Designed for both instructors and experienced home steppers, Marcus uses effective cuing techniques like tempo or directional changes, “cutting the move in half,” and teaching “ping pong style” (right-left-right-left). ©2003. (73 min.). DVD has: Narrow screen.

OK
I really liked Marcus as an instructor, and this video did give me a decent sweat, but I feel that the choreography was often oversimplified and repetitious. The cuing was great, and so were the backup girls, but I think this workout would have benefited a lot more if there wasn't quite so many turns and moves around the box. That's essentially what a lot of step workouts do, but I found I got bored after the first fifteen minutes. I guess I just prefer more high-impact stuff. I definitely recommend this one to beginners and intermediate exercisers, but advanced folk might find this tedious. - posted by Dan on 6/27/2005
Great Step Workout!
I received this as a gift and really like it! I am an advanced/complex choreography step junkie, and found this to be fun and complex, without being super intense. Some basic steps are repeated a little too much, but the creative steps and Marcus' personality outshines the downfalls, IMO. Marcus cues superbly and makes learning complex choreography seem super easy-somehow he manages to teach you a basic foot pattern then changes the order, then the direction and before you know it, you are spinning, stomping, and stepping all around your step! The music was better than most CIA workouts, and the set is a little dark, but not in a distracting way.I highly recommend this workout! :) - posted by Sandra on 1/10/2005
Love Marcus and this workout!!
I held off for so long getting this workout because of the reviews here, and I wish I hadn't! I love this workout and Marcus!! He is so adorable, funny, charming, and fun! The production is NOT half as bad as the reviews here make it seem. I barely noticed his breathing-on my DVD (can't comment on the vhs) it certainly did NOT sound like a wind tunnel, nor was it distracting at all! This is a long step workout with some very creative steps. The only downfall is some steps are broken down to much and there is some filler, and he starts off easy and progressively gets more complex. My first thought was this was to easy, until it got right before the second half. I found this workout to be fun and different. I'd rate it low to high intermediate, maybe low adv, this also might be good for someone wanting to learn complex choreography. I liked it very much and will now be purchasing more of Marcus' workouts! So if you have any hesitation about getting this workout and need something to compare it to-I'd say Marcus is like Christi Taylor but not as fast paced. He is an excellent cuer, has some unique combinations, and will make you smile & laugh! - posted by Step Girl on 1/4/2005
Disappointing Production
The production of this video was very disappointing. Mr. Irwin was hard to hear over the music, hard to see because of the set, and the camera man needed some training. I do think he could have sped up the training pace, I felt he broke it down a little bit too much. I did like the creative footwork though once I got the hang of it and was able to pick up the intensity. Mr. Irwin breathing so hard into the microphone was distracting as well. I sent him an email with some feedback and he answered me back saying he had some of the same concerns I mentioned and wasn't terribly happy with the video either and hoping to make the next time around better. - posted by Deb on 3/28/2004
Marcus's cueing is excellent, but the workout itself is not intense enough! It is boring. The moves are broken down way too much. I believe that this is not an inter/advanced level tape. Definitely a beginner/low inter tape in my opinion! The sound quality is awful. I had a to ask Collage for 3 different copies before I got one to work decent enough! - posted by terribleterra on 3/27/2004
Irwin is great, but as for this video....
First off, let me say Irwin himself is a fabulous cuer and the moves are intense. As for the video itself, the production quality was quite poor, as if it had been filmed in someone's basement to avoid detection. I normally like dark sets, but this was creepy. The headmic Irwin wore made him sound like he was in a wind tunnel whenever he breathed. The baggy pants Irwin and his cohorts wore made it hard to see some of the leg movements, and I kept wondering if they were going to trip over their pants. The cameraman wasn't always keen to show the legs, and sometimes he had a hard time focusing on Irwin and the crew themselves. Unfortunately, after the first segment I had to rest, not because of the intensity of the video, but because it gave me a headache. Again, Irwin is fantastic, but this video was a real disappointment. - posted by Sherri M. on 3/11/2004
Great Creativity But . . .
I loved Marcus' cuing and the choreography was very creative. However, I didn't feel that it was intense enough for me! I love to feel totally exhausted after a workout and this one doesn't offer that. Good for my light days! - posted by Jonalyn Forman on 3/11/2004
Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
