Certified instructor description: Non-stop, no-gimmicks “dance aerobics” led by a creative and motivating instructor. It’s a high-energy, fat-burning blast — just keep your feet moving and enjoy the ride. It has four completely different combinations. Each one features a well-sequenced series of playful, familiar moves (e.g. double jogs, flick kicks, pendulums, grapevines and heel jacks — often with a spin or bounce added for interest). Between each combo, you get one-minute, ultra-high-intensity “bursts” (e.g. air jumps, split jumps). Amy’s cuing is motivating and clear; her moves are “athletic,” not “dancy.” The workout ends with ab toning that uses 2 to 10 lb. dumbbells. ©2010. DVD has: 3 premixes (37 to 65 min. alternate workouts), Chapter menus, Wide screen.

Amy Bento's Hi/Lo Dynamics

SO MUCH FUN!
It's true Amy doesn't break down the moves a whole lot. This isn't a workout you will learn the first time through. But you will appreciate that once you learn the routine. Two or three times through each combo should do it. And it is so well-chaptered that it is easy to take it a combo at a time. It is worth it to learn because it is SO FUN! Amy has such great energy. Love it! - posted by Melissa on 3/18/2012
Fun workout..Poor cuing
This workout was frustrating at first due to poor cuing. However I stuck with it and the choreography is fun once you get it. - posted by Wendy on 3/7/2012
Not the best cuing
I love Amy Bento and admire/respect her for getting a tough workout video out right after having a baby. That being said, this workout isn't one of her best. The cuing is not that great--I found myself wanting to quit the video because I couldn't keep up with the moves. This is not characteristic of her other videos--In the Ring & Hi/Lo Extreme have exceptional cuing. Also, my ankles killed me the next day--I noticed some other reviewers warned of this side effect but I didn't heed their warnings. I don't know that I'll attempt this one again unless I want to frustrate myself again. 3/21/12: I reviewed this on 2/20 right after having done the video the first time and now, a month later, I decided to give it another try. I hated to give up on Amy and I am glad I didn't--it's definitely better the second time around. Sure, I'm still not nailing every move, but that's what makes it challenging and interesting. It's a keeper! - posted by Susan on 2/20/2012
High Energy Cardio
I really want to give this 3 1/2 stars. The pros: 1. Amy Bento is great and I highly recommend her other dvds as well - especially the kick box surge. 2. You will not get bored with the combos and the time passes quickly. 3. Her pre-mixes are handy when you don't feel like doing the whole thing. Cons: 1. Too much hopping around on one foot. 2. Too many turns make it difficult to follow at first - I find it difficult to mirror the instructor when I have to keep turning away from the TV (and I tend to turn the wrong way). 3. Pepto-Bismol colored set is unpleasant. Overall, it was a good buy for the money but not Amy's best. - posted by Valerie on 2/17/2012
Keeps on moving
My sister has been an Amy Bento fan for years, so I decided to give it a try. Plus it was on sale! I was looking for a fun, well-choreographed fat burner that fits in my schedule. I've just recently been adding more advanced DVDs to my collection and am loving them, including this one. I have several Christie Taylor workouts and this was reminiscent of her but still slightly different. Overall, this DVD motivates me to keep moving and is, most importantly, effective and fun! - posted by Julie on 2/16/2012
Surprise
I did this tape for the first time coming home tired. I had no idea what I was in for. I loved it doing it for the first time without previewing the mechanics of her movement. Agreed she could have done some better cuing. I loved it though, I was surprise. It is a good mix for the day I do not want to run. - posted by Kerine on 2/3/2012
Great workout
I really loved this workout! I previewed it once before I tried it and got all combos down the first time doing it. I especially love the music and the bursts between the combos are very fun (I love any type of plyo). Highly recommended if you are looking for a fun and effective workout. - posted by Inga on 5/29/2011
Don't make this your first Amy workout
I love Amy, she is my favorite instructor. If you are looking for a great workout, try any of her other hi/lo workouts, such as hi/lo knockout. You won't be disappointed. If you love kickboxing, her kickbox surge is incredible. If it's step you desire, ASC 2 and 3 are both crazy fun. This one just doesn't grab me. It feels rushed; like she just wanted to release something, anything in 2010. The music is too loud over her voice, and she rushes through the combos at times. The ab section is very short. I don't hate it, I just don't love it either. I will continue to be a fan, and I hear that she is coming out with a kettlebell/kickbox workout this year, and I am looking forward to that one. Just a word to those who have never tried an Amy workout: skip this one, try another one. - posted by Brittany W. on 5/3/2011
AWESOME if done on a rebounder!!
Okay after my first review I bought a rebounder and had another go at Amy Bento's Hi/Lo Dynamics and I found it very fun and doable on my rebounder!! LOVED the music and most of the moves and best of all no twisting my ankles, the rebounder helped my ankles and my back it was AWESOME!! So very fun workout and sweaty if done on a rebounder! - posted by Lamoura on 4/4/2011

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.
sample time graph
Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Wide screen
X
The program fully fills a wide-screen television screen. Note: These videos will display black bars at the top and bottom on a traditional 4 x 3 ratio TV screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
