Time graph for Amy Bento's Kickbox Xtreme
It’s non-stop action with great transitions — you’ll smoothly flow from one combo to the next. Not for beginners, this explosive, rapid-fire choreography never lets up (Amy “cues as she goes,” no slowing down to demo a move). Moving way beyond static punches and kicks, Amy’s combos are wide-ranging and unusually varied (from spins and directional changes to plyo-jumps and traveling lunges). You also get an aerobic/anaerobic element; each series includes an extra-intense “power burst.” It all ends with ab sculpting. Requires an X-ertube and a step (only for the toning). Also includes some “pre-mixed” workout options. Better production quality, less “whooping” than Amy’s earlier programs. ©2006. DVD has: 7 premixes (37 to 57-min. alternate workouts), Chapter menus.

Amy Bento's Kickbox Xtreme

Challenging, fun workout!
I wasn't sure if I would like this DVD or not after reading the reviews, but decided to get it in hopes of adding it to my rotation. Seems so many times I buy a new DVD I am disappointed that it is either too easy or too complicated and frustrating. This workout was challenging as far as following along the first time, but I just tried it and found it really was not as complicated as it looked. That being said, I have been doing different kickboxing workouts for several years now and was familiar with most of the moves anyway. I can't imagine ever being able to do this workout without first learning the kickboxing moves somewhere else first. I was never bored and forgot to check to see how long I had been working out, like I do in some workouts. And my clothing was soaking wet when I was done! Definitely worth your time! Amy is very likeable and never annoying. That's a big plus if you plan to use it over and over, which I certainly do! I like that there are several different workouts already mixed so I don't have to do it myself. That will definitely keep things fresh! By the way, I am going to be 50 this year and pleased I had no trouble keeping up with those sweet young things! - posted by Patricia on 5/12/2008
X -Rated
Thoroughly enjoyed this outing with Amy. Having done Karate in the past she has put together a nice set of combinations. Yes, as others have stated her form is a little loose. Mine is as well as at 48 I am rusty on execution. Nicely constucted, doable intervals, working the entire body throughtout the tape resulting in a good overall body workout. - posted by Luli on 5/11/2008
Alot of kicks!
I'm an advanced kickboxer, former Turbo Kick instructor as my background. Kickbox Xtreme does have a learning curve but after a few times of working out to the dvd, it got easier to figure out. The music has a tribal beat and its interval style choreography so you don't get bored. She will give you a combination and then you stop and do an interval. The intervals aren't like Cathe's Kick Max intervals where its high impact insanity(although, I love it on those days when I want a push). Amy's intervals are fun kickboxing combo's like a hop side kick hop hop side kick or fast side to side hops with some fast punches. Very fun. Be prepared to do alot of kicks! I think the 4th interval was the toughest with the hop round house kicks. They go on for a long time and as I'm typing this, I'm feeling it in my outer thighs! Amy is really a beautiful instructor and in awesome shape and she really has a positive smiling attitude that gets you through the grueling 85 min workout. I'll have to try some of the shorter premixes. I burned well over 1,185 calories. She also has a pregnant woman showing low impact modifications. The ab work is done standing with some bands. The cool down is Tai Chi inspired with beautiful soothing music. - posted by SLL on 4/28/2008
Xtremely Butt-Kicking!!!
I didn't know if I was going to be a fan of this DVD after the first round, but second try was even better! I am an advanced level exerciser and I LOVE kick boxing- this DVD was very challenging. But in a great way. Now that I know the moves a little better, I know it can only go up from here. I love Amy and think she is an amazing and innovative instructor. - posted by Alison on 4/19/2008
Another Cathe fan loves this workout
I really like this one. Although some of the moves are tricky at first, the more I do it, the more I get the hang of it. Kind of reminds me of Billy Blanks Taebo workouts, but I like Amy's much better because she does both sides evenly. Definitely advanced, although I suppose you can modify it and use less impact if you're not advanced. I also love the premixes for days when I'm short on time. - posted by s on 4/4/2008
Love it!!
The more I do this workout, the more I love it. The premix options are really nice to have also, since I don't always have time to do the whole workout front to back. Also, premixes are great because I think it prevents you from getting bored with the workout. I think I sweat the most with this video out of all my videos, and I love it! Amy's attitude is great and her choreography is fun. Plus, the ab section at the end is short, sweet, and effective! I do this one all the time! - posted by CLD on 3/25/2008
Am a Cathe fan, but love this one by Amy!
I'm 28 and have been doing kickboxing, step and weight lifting for several years and have been a Cathe fan for quite awhile now but decided to give Amy Bento a try. While I agree that her cuing isn't quite up to par with Cathe's videos and more intricate, once I got some of the sequences after a few run-throughs, I find I really enjoy this one a lot! You definitely need to be a little patient and try it a few times, but once you get the hang of it, it's a great addition to your Cathe or Tae-Bo kickboxing DVDs! Love it! - posted by Jolene on 3/24/2008
Great Cardio Workout!
I've had KBX for a while now. There is definitely a learning curve as there is with most of Amy's workouts, but that is one of the things I enjoy about Amy's workouts. I hate nothing more than hearing an instructor give a lengthy breakdown of every move since I do my workouts over and over. The music is rocking, the choreography is fun, intense, and creative. I think a lot of Amy's workouts blow Cathe out of the water. She is as intense as any Cathe cardio (with the exception of Cathe's Imax workouts) I own but Amy's choreography is WAY more fun and creative (I still enjoy my Cathe's though). For those who say this is intermediate or they don't get enough of a cardio workout, you must not have taken the time to learn and work the workout, b/c this is an advanced, cardio sweatfest! I love that Amy makes kickboxing fun with a hi/lo flare instead of trying to be a "serious" kickboxer. If you want to burn caalories and have fun doing it, then KBX is for you! - posted by Angela, South Carolina on 3/21/2008
Complicated Choreography
I first did Cathe's Kick Max DVD, and then a couple of days later tried Amy's Kickbox XTreme. I have to say, I MUCH prefer Cathe. Cathe's DVD left me sweating and sore, and feeling like I got my money's worth--Cathe also has great cuing and the moves are traditional and uncomplicated, which I like. Amy WOULD have a great workout if I had the patience to do the DVD over and over, essentially standing there watching her workout while my workout consists of my frustration building at the complicated moves. I think if she pared down some of her complicated sequences she would have a DVD that would retain its intensity and reach a greater audience, because not all of us are patient enough to watch a DVD multiple times before mastering the moves. - posted by Amanda on 3/15/2008
Hate turns to Love
I used to agree with other reviewers - the cueing was bad, the moves were frustrating and felt unnatural, etc, etc...this workout used to have a serious dread factor for me. I decided to put it in my weekly workout rotation until I mastered it - and I am so glad I did! It has become my favorite workout! It's great for stress relief - as you are too fatigued at the end to be wound up about anything! Plus, when she says "Who ya punching today?" I usually have an answer right away ; ) So you have to put a little effort into learning the routine...but it's worth it. Besides, I think a DVD is a waste of money if I CAN do the whole thing on my first try...because then it isn't really a workout. - posted by Melissa on 3/10/2008

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
