Certified instructor description: A beautifully produced blend of flowing stretches and gentle toning. It covers all aspects of back health: relaxation, strength and flexibility. The first segment focuses on back alignment and breathing; the second on strengthening the back and its opposing ab muscles. The one-on-one cuing is soothing and calm with easy-to-follow imagery (“inhale as if your whole body were an expanding balloon”). The workout is exquisitely filmed on a tranquil Australian beach and features quiet instrumental music. ©2001.

Back in Shape

Good, not great
This workout slowly gets your back warmed up. Hopefully it will lead to greater flexibility. It doesn't stress rotational flexibility. I'm hoping that it will help build strength. - posted by SB on 9/23/2011
Great for healing
A few months following surgery on my right elbow, I fell and injured my left hip and knee. As a result, I couldn't exercise. Now that my docs are allowing light exercise, I ordered "Back in Shape". I love it!!! Not too much...just enough for my whole body to start with movement and strengthening. The music and scenery are great and Mimi's instructions are easy to follow. I'm doing it every other day and starting to feel so much better. Love it!! - posted by Lynn on 7/21/2011
Really helps
I really like this video. I've had chronic back pain for several years (despite doing lots of a variety of exercise). This has given me significant relief, even though I've only done one 15 minute segment at a time usually. - posted by Becky on 5/27/2011
Good
This is a nice relaxing bedtime back exercise disc. - posted by Barb on 5/19/2011
Great dvd
I absolutely love this dvd. There is nothing I don't like about it. I have been using it nearly everyday for several months to promote more flexibility in my back, which it has done. The poses are easy to do and the music blends nicely with the exercises. I recommend this dvd to anyone looking for a gentle way to gain more flexibility and relaxation from a dvd. - posted by Kathy on 10/20/2010
dislike
These exercises are really basic. Just what I always did for my back and really similar to other stretching dvds I have. Really disappointing for the 20$ I paid for. - posted by Kristine on 10/16/2010
Excellent
It is definitely not a workout to burn calories, but has helped me regain some strength in my back. It has also helped relieve tension in the muscles that I couldn't seem to do with therapy. Great video, just remember to take it slow. - posted by Yvonne on 7/22/2010
Slow
This was too meditative to do any good for your back. It put me to sleep. - posted by Peggy on 6/25/2010
not that gentle
I bought this DVD for my husband, who is elderly and has had back injuries. It sounded like it was gentle enough for him to do, but he says the exercises cause him too much pain. They're probably fine for most people, but this DVD won't work for him. - posted by Blondie on 3/23/2010
Love it
I have a back injury that requires me to do some sort of back exercise every day. It's hard to find a tape that is safe for me to do and enjoyable. I LOVE this video!! It's very relaxing, the woman's voice is very soothing and meditative I look forward to doing this workout every evening! - posted by defanm on 3/23/2010

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Specialty: Back Pain
X
Workouts especially designed to prevent back pain (or to alleviate its symptoms if you already have it). These programs usually combine gentle stretches with simple back-strengthening exercises.
