Certified instructor description: A graceful, ballet-style workout that's formatted in well-planned exercise "blocks." It's a technique that maximizes results by precisely targeting specific muscles with specific positions and movements. For example, one series builds lean legs with facing-the-barre moves like squats and relevés. Another block focuses on balance and agility with side-to-the-barre motions. The program also includes a fast-paced, upper-body sequence and a challenging floorwork segment. Most routines boost the variety with tempo and foot position changes. You also get lots of level and intensity options (e.g. using a different hand position or piece of equipment). Requires 3 to 5 lb. dumbbells. A medicine ball is optional. They use a ballet barre; a high back chair will work. ©2011. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Burn at the Barre

Okay
Rather disappointed in this workout and find it hard to believe it is rated intermediate/advanced. I do Leah Sarago's Ballet Body Total Body, and even though I have been doing bar workouts for years, she seriously kicks my rear. I felt this video featured a lot of moves that did little to nothing, and the "advanced" exerciser drove me crazy with all her flailing around. Your company only rates Leah's aforementioned video as intermediate, which seems unbelievable compared to this. Will probably work out to this only when feeling lazy. - posted by Kim on 3/22/2013
Decent barre workout
This is a pretty decent barre workout. I found the intermediate level very do-able (I consider myself intermediate/advanced). I took one star off for the general "production" of the video - it wasn't the best quality and Ashley (the girl demonstrating the advanced moves) was seriously annoying. I took one more star off because 30% of the exercises just didn't do anything for me, just a lot of kicking and swinging around. However, I will keep this dvd for days where I just want something not too difficult but will still make me feel the burn. - posted by Heather on 2/14/2013
second place after Tracey Mallett
If there were no Tracey Mallett workouts then this one would be my favorite barre workout. I love the barre/pilates mix, for example the advanced modification of side straight leg raise really works the abs. (I was surprised how much my abs felt that the next day!) I like that the w/o includes planks and those excruciating pretzels :) There's no dread factor, sets don't last very long and there's always stretching thrown in. I think it's a solid w/o and a good choice if you're into barre workouts. - posted by Sasha on 9/27/2012
One of my favorite barre workouts
I love for barre workouts, "found" them about six months ago and can't believe I didn't try them sooner. Burn at the Barre is one of my faves! Wish I had this when I was a beginner to barre workouts b/c it shows great beginner modifications (the modifications in some other barre workouts I have are SO not beginner!). Great options for intermediate too (the one I follow) and the advanced option is really something to work towards. I always really feel it in my legs, hips, butt, all the places a good barre workout should hit. And I love the instructors so much! Excellent form and clearly a professional back round. They give better and more frequent pointers on form than other barre workouts, so there's no chance of injuring my knees or low back if I do what they say. They're very encouraging and make the workout fun! If you like barre workouts get this one for sure! - posted by Soledad on 9/9/2012
younger, stronger
To echo what the previous reviewer said: This workout, and all bar workouts, as far as I'm concerned, really do make you younger. And stronger. In a whole new way. They kind of bring everything in to the midline, and make it a whole lot tighter. I think I've done all of them, and they're all a little different. There's something to take from all of them. With that being said, this one is special, I think, because of the instructors' backgrounds. The production values are poor, but these women are sincere, and their workout extremely effective; I'd hate to see somebody pass this up because it's not as glossy as the others. - posted by co on 7/3/2012
a new favorite
I have been doing barre workouts for several months. I was feeling old and frumpy, but barre workouts have given me results really fast. Best of all I feel younger and better! This is a wonderful workout to add to my rotation. I've noticed that when I pick a staff favorite from Collage Video, it also becomes one of my favorites. Burn at the Barre has 3 levels, which is perfect for me. I did some beginning and some intermediate, and today I can feel every muscle in my glutes. One of the instructors is a physical therapist and shows proper technique, so I didn't hurt my low back or knees. This video gets your heart rate up a little, but your muscles are stretched out after every segment. Instead of feeling old and menopausal, I feel younger and more graceful. - posted by Barbara on 6/24/2012
Dancy but effective
I am a Pilates Instructor so I appreciate this Pilates based barre workout. I enjoyed this very much and love the sculpting with the ball. Her abdominals were pretty easy however the leg work was really good! - posted by Daniela on 5/31/2012
Burn at the Barre
I really like this workout. I wasn't sure what I was in for when I bought this. But I was looking for a workout that offered cardio and strength without all the pounding on the joints. This one does it for me. There are three levels, so one can modify...great one! - posted by pixie on 5/17/2012
Challenging workout for the legs, core and upper body
If you like doing the Barre workouts, this is a good one to add to your routine. You'll be challenged and the pace is pretty quick so you get an elevated heart-rate. They offer modifications for all levels from beginner to advanced. - posted by Abby on 5/13/2012
Burn at the Barre
I really enjoy this dvd because it allows you to modify your ability level during the whole process so if you decide to try an advanced move and need to modify it you can do so without missing any of the workout! - posted by Jan on 5/10/2012

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
