Time graph for Cardio for Beginners with Petra Kolber
Varied, beginner-oriented moves in two different movement styles. Petra’s easy-to-follow cuing and contagious energy make this the ideal beginners’ program. The DVD has four segments: an 11 and 21-minute dance-style section plus an 11 and 21-minute athletic-style section (that you can program to play in any order, so the workout can be whatever length you want). The dance moves are all familiar favorites like step touches, grapevines and mambos. The athletic exercises are also proven basics like marches, repeaters and V-steps. The cuing is superb; Petra knows exactly how to instruct and motivate a beginner-level class (she’s been teaching for 20 years). ©2008. DVD has: Programmable chapters, Wide screen.

Cardio for Beginners with Petra Kolber

Good for light days
I own 2 other workouts from Petra. I sometimes find her routines too dancy, but not this one. It's easy to follow and low impact. I like it that I can mix and match the workouts. What I didn't like is that it doesn't have a separate warm-up routine. Adding a 5 mins warmup, would've made this a 5 star workout. - posted by camilla on 2/17/2010
I LOVE IT!
This workout was really, really fun. I've gained some weight in the past couple of years (but always have been an avid exerciser) and want something to just keep me moving even when I'm not in the mood for an intense workout. This is just the thing for me. The hour flew by. I am dance-challenged but was able to keep up. I found the routines to be really fun. Not boring but not too hard to figure out. This has a definite place in my rotation. Plus, Petra seems really nice and not at all annoying. - posted by Ruth on 8/31/2009
If you've been disappointed by easy-looking videos that are too hard...
...then try this video. I never did one of Petra's before but I was looking for something to get back into exercise. I'm overweight and out of shape and so many, even ones I use to do, leave me breathless and I can't finish them. The two 10 minute segments are do-able for me and I'll eventually do the two 20 min. segments. One of the things I especially like is that most of the time, the camera shows their full bodies, so you know what they're doing. I hate close ups of faces that when you return to full body, they're doing something different. It's great too that you can program the segments so you can have a longer and/or varied workout. - posted by Gillian on 8/20/2009
Cardio for Beginners
I like Kolber, she's cute and she's very easy to follow, but I just don't like her routines! I didn't like the routine and it wasn't challenging at all, which means it may be great for those who desire something more light for those days you don't feel like really working out that heavily. - posted by Jen on 7/29/2009
Great for non-beginners, too!
I've never worked out with Petra before, but I ordered this based on the video preview... I love it! I'm a high intermediate exerciser, and I work out with kundalini yoga, kettlebells, and more intense step/kickboxing/bootcamp type workouts most of the time. I love this cardio because it's broken down into two 10- and two 20- minute segments, and it's FUN! Petra is very friendly and sweet, and is great at cuing and explaining the movements. The exercise itself was great for me because it got my blood pumping and energy flowing without getting me out of breath--I use these workouts as add on's to shorter, more intense workouts (like LB's 12 minute kettlebell workout or 10 minute solution kickboxing segments) to add in a little more calorie burning but at a more relaxed pace. Both the dance- and athletic-based cardio are easy to do (it is geared towards beginners, after all), fun, and effective. If you're a beginner, this will help you get started and start dropping some pounds easily, and if you're an intermediate or more advanced, this is great for an off-day when you still want to move and have fun, or to use as add-on's to other workouts. Honestly, this DVD is very versatile and the instructor is fantastic. I think it's a great purchase for any level based on that!! - posted by Michelle on 6/27/2009
GREAT
I was looking for an aerobic DVD with good music and routines in time with the music, plus something that was fun!!! I got that with this DVD!!! Love it! Love it! Love it! - posted by Sarah on 5/14/2009
Not a Beginner here, BUT I love this DVD!!!
WOW! I really love Petra! have several of her Step/yoga DVDs so I didn't hesitate to purchase this one! I love how it is broken into 2-10 minute workouts and 2-20 minutes that you can program in any order you wish for any length of workout that you need. I am not a beginner, perhaps low/mid advanced exerciser, but this is a fabulous DVD. I have only done it once since I just received this, but it will be used regularly! With the warmer weather, I don't like being tied into 45+ minute long cardio sessions, let alone DVDs, when I can be outdoors enjoying the weather and get myself moving! I also, year round, lift heavy weights with a trainer 3-4 days per week and run about 2-3 days per week. Since I train hard most days per week, when I do a DVD, I want it to be something that I can follow along with ease, something that makes me feel good, plus it needs to be fun and won't wear me out. This DVD fits the bill! Since switching up my training to a more athletic-based routine, I no longer have an interest in instructors like Cathe or Amy Bento, as my body and mind need the break on the 2-3 "off" session days. Petra is quickly becoming one of my go-to instructors! Her cueing is fabulous, she is full of energy and is very expressive with facial gestures. It's just plain and simply fun! No tricky choreography here and no mental fatigue involved! It's great for all levels/ages (26 yrs old here) and can be easily intensified with some plyometrics or a weighted belt/vest. I am so thankful for DVDs like this! It really helps my body and mind recover without the dread factor I've been getting from most of my DVDs lately! - posted by Julia on 4/24/2009
Love it!
This is a great DVD. I love the option of programming it to play any (or all, if you dare!) of the 4 aerobic segments. Petra's cuing is excellent, making even the dance segment easy to follow for those with two left feet. The athletic portions are fairly basic moves but worked into really fun combos that can get the heart rate pumping and sweat flowing if you really give it your all. As I am working my way back into exercise from a back injury, I really appreciate how doable and low impact this is. Petra is a wonderful and highly motivating. - posted by Izzy on 4/16/2009
Great workout!
I really enjoyed this workout. I usually work out pretty hard (to Cathe, Amy, Kelly, and the FIRM), and I still got a good sweaty workout with this one even though it is rated "beginner." I think I'd rate it intermediate level, but I guess that's because I modified it some. I used weighted gloves which really increases the intensity, plus plyos instead of squats and used arms all the time, in places she doesn't. I am always looking for easy choreography with some intensity and this can fit the bill. So far I have only done the athletic workouts (11 + 21 + 6 min stretch = nice 38 min workout). I haven't tried the dance sections yet because I usually like athletic moves, but I highly recommend this one even if just for that. The set is strange, like trying to be someone's home (a loft?) but they just moved in and haven't hung up the pictures yet. The workouts are so short that by the way time you get done "taking it from the top," a few times, its over, so there isn't time to get bored. Great workout, give us another one, Petra, with easy choreography like this one, but at an intermediate/advanced level. - posted by Cheryl in California on 3/22/2009
Good low impact workout
This is a pretty good workout. I enjoyed the two 20 min. workouts more than the 10 min. ones. The choreography is very simplistic, yet I like that she does combos rather than just one individual move after another. All of the moves are low impact. I found these workouts to be very low intensity (I have done them all wearing my HRM), but some moves can be made more intense. It is what it says it is; a beginner level workout. I will use it on days when I am not feeling up to par, or anytime that I might do a Leslie or other low impact workout. - posted by Tracy on 3/13/2009

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
