Certified instructor description: Thirteen challenging martial arts-based workouts led by six experienced instructors. The programs combine modern exercise techniques with the ancient moves originally used to train Chinese warriors. It's all designed to build speed, strength and agility. The actual exercises range from classic calisthenic and gym-style routines to Tai Chi, karate and even animal-inspired motions (e.g "move like a tiger"). Each workout is different. Some feature aero/tone intervals while others are pure cardio or pure toning. You also get lots of variety within each category (e.g. cardio: all high-intensity vs. fast/slow intervals; toning: total body vs. core-focused). In addition, each instructor brings their own personality and motivation to the two workouts they lead. The set has two booklets and 14 DVDS — 12 primary workouts plus an intro video and an instructional DVD. Requires weighed sand bags (or dumbbells). Three of the programs use a ceiling-mounted pull-up bar, but an alternate exercise is often shown. ©2011. DVD has: Wide screen.

Cardio Karate - 14 DVD Set

Worth it!
I haven't tried all the workouts on this set yet, but is a keeper for me. Nice blend of cardio with strength circuits. The music match perfectly the Karate concept of this workout. The choreography is unique. Love Amy enthusiasm, she is one of my favorite instructors. Cooks Wow! such a great instructor! I'm getting a pull up bar soon in order to get full benefits of his workouts. If you like martial arts, kickboxing, cardio, circuits and want to add something different to your collection get this. - posted by Sharaz on 4/21/2012
Original and fun
I was wish-washy on getting this set... sounded great but the clips did not blow me away. I wanted something new and went ahead and got it as if I did not like it I could return it. Well.. I love it. I like the moves and it is cardio.. but not kill me cardio.. I like that too.. but I like to mix it up. I love the pull ups and pull up bar work. I am not doing a full rotation.. but I have tried almost all the workouts and like each one. Very worth having. The strength work.. is a wee bit killer.. but in a fun way. I would recommend this to anyone who likes Karate and wants to mix the moves with cardio and strength. A winning combo... - posted by Brigitte on 3/19/2012
Very fun, unique and never boring workout
Alright. This is probably the most fun I ever had working out. Being in a mediocre intermediate shape I am taking the exercises on slowly and go maybe through 30 minutes at a time and modifying some of them (like my knees don't like me jumping yet, I have to build the muscles first and lose weight before taking this on in full...so I modify some exercises for now to fit my abilities). That being said - if you know your body well and you work out mindfully then the investment into those DVDs is totally worth it. Actually looks like a bargain to me now where I use them. I like Cardio Karate sooooo much. Here is why: Cardio Karate exercises do not ever get boring, they are different from the more regular stuff, have few repetitions and then something new is added, unique. The flow of the movements makes them almost natural. The Karate aspect is fun, makes you feel like Jackie Chan or Jet Li..or Trinity :-) And while this is a workout and sure not instruction I think building muscle memory for some of the movements may even be helpful in some self defense situations. The exercises target a nice mix of cardio, strength, balance, flexibility and speed, all is very balanced. Summary: Excellent. Unique and remarkable instructors. Outstanding fun and exercise value. Only one word of caution: Be mindful with your body and if some things look difficult or almost impossible then approach them slowly or even skip (I for example skip the pull up bar exercises, there are alternatives abound). - posted by Sylvia on 2/25/2012

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Wide screen
X
The program fully fills a wide-screen television screen. Note: These videos will display black bars at the top and bottom on a traditional 4 x 3 ratio TV screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
