Certified instructor description: Non-stop and ultra-challenging, it features ten complete aerobic/anaerobic cycles. Each cycle begins with innovative step cardio followed by an off-step/high-impact “burst” and ends with a well-deserved active recovery. It’s all carefully structured to maximize do-ability (e.g. the most complicated choreography is paired with the least intense cardio bursts). The mostly-in-the-air “burst” segments are the toughest; they range from plyo jacks and plié jacks to tuck jumps and standing jumps. With slightly shorter recovery periods, this program is a little harder than Cathe’s Imax 2. Some recognizable-song vocal music. DVD offers pre-programmed workout options (e.g. all the step segments, without the “blasts”). ©2005. DVD has: 4 premixes (24 to 37-min. alternate workouts), Chapter menus.

Cathe Friedrich's Imax 3

Classic Cathe. Love this workout
I have a lot of Cathe DVDs - from the 90s through the most recent. I've had iMax 2 for years but never got this one until now. I find iMax 2 more challenging, but this is really close. She doesn't go crazy breaking down the step sections, which I love because I'll do DVDs for years and find it so boring to continually break down each segment. The blasts are tough and awesome. The feeling I get after completing this workout it total accomplishment, and total blissful endorphined-out exhaustion. I love love love it. I love Cathe too. Her easy to follow que-ing is legendary. - posted by Erin on 2/2/2012
Killer
This video is probably the toughest cardio I own. Cathe is exhausted and breathless through most of it, as is her crew. If she's worn out, you know you will be, too! It alternates short step combos with high impact sessions that send your heart rate soaring. There are ten of them, and you will be counting them down. I had to work my way up to all ten, and I'm pretty much spent by the end. It's not the most fun video, but you don't have time to be bored. Just push your way through and think about all the calories you just torched! If I'm trying to drop a few pounds to squeeze into that LBD, this is my go to, hence the 5 stars. Word of warning: not for the beginner, definitely for the seasoned exerciser. However, don't be afraid, work your way through, combo by combo. You'll be glad you did! - posted by Brittany W. on 11/5/2011
Kicked My Butt
This video is crazy hard. You must be super fit to do it, but if you need a challenge and want to push your body, this is for you. I love it, because ever since high impact aerobics went out of style in the late 80's it has been tough for me to find workouts that get my hearrate up high enough to burn fat and keep me slim. I have done the Step and Kick box thing, but prefer dance. High impact dance was my favorite back in the day. But now closing in on 40 and having had a child, I find this to be great at getting rid of the last of the "baby fat" and it is very challenging. No other video I have tried is as tough. Not really enjoyable though. It is sort of like boot camp. You have to push yourself, but I figure if Cedie can jump like that, I can too. I only have 10 pounds to lose. If Cedie were not on this tape, I would probably never have tried all that jumping, but if she can do it, I figure, so can I. Good job Cathe. Good job Cedie. You go girls. - posted by Li on 6/18/2011
I Really Did It!
I have done Imax 3 two times in the past week and I can't believe I really did it! I have looked at this DVD and previewed clips of it in the past, but have always been a little intimidated by it, not only because of the intensity, but because the choreography is rated as complex and I'm not a dancy person. I tend to get confused when Cathe starts moving around the step and I can't turn my head around to see what she's doing. Well, I watched this DVD a few times to see what it was like. I decided to just break things down a bit and learn the step combos only before adding in the blasts. there is a step combo only premix that's about 30 minutes, so I set aside a longer cardio session and did that premix. If a combo confused me, I'd back up the DVD and do it again and again til I nailed it. Some I got the hang of quicker than others. Here's what I learned: there are 10 combos that consist of basic step moves that, if you've done other Cathe step dvd's, then you've probably already seen most of them before. The combos repeat six times before moving onto the blast. That means more practice time! Once I felt comfortable with the foot work on the combos, I decided it was time to put the whole thing together last Saturday. It was tough, but I loved it and was soaked by the end. You do 10 mini step combos followed by 10 blasts. There's jumping, air jacks, plyo jacks, tuck jumps, and power lunges to name a few for the blasts. Some blasts are harder than others. I'm glad I didn't give up on this workout, its intense, it takes time to learn, but its so worth it once you learn it and can say that you survived Imax 3!!! - posted by Amanda on 6/12/2011
GREAT Workout! CATHE is the Best!!!
Imax 3 is so much fun, the time just flies by. The step segments are fairly easy to learn (I had them down after 2-3 tries) and are not too dancy or complicated. The intensity blasts are great and very tough! I think the length is perfect and if you are in a time crunch you can do one of the shorter premixes. I am finally able to get through the workout without hitting the pause button:) Cathe is the BEST and if you haven't tried her yet, you are REALLY missing out! She is tough, she will work you hard! That coupled with her personality makes me come back to her workouts time after time. - posted by Kristy on 5/4/2011
Choreography was too advanced for me.
I love a good work-out and I can tell that Cathe Friedrich will provide a good work-out. Unfortunately, like her Cardio Fusion tape, I could not get the choreography. I tried each tape at least 5 times and never made it past 10-15 minutes because the choreography got me. It was frustrating. Ending up selling it on e-bay and will try Intensity which is supposed to be more basic choreography. - posted by Susan on 12/12/2010
Great Step Interval Workout!
Starts out with a solid warmup. The 10 step sections feature some complex choro. Took me about 3 times through the workout to get all the choro. I wished the BPM was a little slower. Although I used a 6 inch step in Imax 1, I used a 4 inch step in this workout and still got a great workout. Fun, challenging, and calorie-burning! - posted by Elise on 12/3/2010
Keep coming back to this one...
Just finished this workout this morning. What a great one! I've had it for a few years and still keep it in my rotation. I sweat tons, feel really accomplished when finished, and get a super cardio workout. It goes super fast too. As far as being hard on the knees...if you "soften your jumps" as Cathe says, by keep all the weight in the heels and thighs rather than the knees it seems to be alot easier on the joints. Just had to comment since I'm sitting here dripping sweat that this is a super awesome calorie burn and super great for the heart! It's a wonderful Saturday or Sunday morning workout when I have the whole 50 minutes to commit! Get this workout, if your advanced, loved and challenge and enjoy step aerobics!! - posted by Firecracker on 7/31/2010
approach with caution!
Today I did Imax 3 and all I can say is oh my god (said in the voice of Janice from ´Friends´) what a workout! The same format as Imax 2, 10 step combos followed by 10 blasts. As many reviews have said, Imax 3 is tougher than Imax 2, there is a lot less recover time in between each combo, I sweated buckets! 54 minutes 349 calories burned If you want a challenging step workout, get Imax 3......and Imax 2!!!!! Some reviewers have commented on the fact that this is hard on your knees, it´s true, there is ALOT of jumping, but at the end of the day it´s up to you to modify, you don´t have to go as deep as they do. - posted by mandy - gelida barcelona on 7/20/2010
Great call outs
This advanced step and complex choreography is made simple to follow from Cathe's CLEAR call outs on the moves. So now I can concentrate more on burning calories then trying to follow along with the steps. The time is good too, it's aprox 45min, then I go out side for a quick jog or do some weights, for a total of an hour workout - works out well for me. :) - posted by Sandra on 5/20/2010

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
