Certified instructor description: A solid step program with interesting moves, excellent cuing and lots of variety (no endless repetition). These innovative combos are designed to burn fat as they subtly challenge your mind and body. It's a fun workout -- you get smooth transitions with choreography that always matches the music (taught add-on-style, using classic eight-count patterns). The progressions build in both intensity and complexity. The first combo uses the simplest moves; the last features fast footwork and lots of around, on and off-step sequences (but very few spins or back-to-the-camera motions). ©2009. DVD has: Chapter menus, Narrow screen.

Cathe Friedrich's Step Moves

Not impressed
I cut my teeth on advanced level stepping by using Cathe choreography. So I was excited to see more from her. I'm sorry to say that I have probably outgrown her now and will not be purchasing any more step workouts from her. Far too easy - not complex and not fun is how I would describe this snoozefest. I was very disappointed. Unfortunately, I haven't given it a fair chance for it to grow on me because I don't want to do it again. Her cueing and her style are also lackluster in this one and it pains me to say because I've always loved Cathe. She also seems disinterested in her own workout and doesn't bother to cue some of it - just does it in chunks and says you can always rewind. - posted by Nesi on 3/14/2013
Cathe is Great!
I have followed Cathe since her days of "Mega Step Blast"! She is the best at complicated choreography. This is a great steady state video. The moves are fun and Cathe's cueing is spot on. I love the music and this is a great workout when I want steady state that gets my heart rate elevated. That is why I am so happy that Cathe made this video. She is the best instructor and sets the Gold Standard for home workouts. I would give this workout 100 stars if I could! - posted by Tiffany on 3/4/2013
solid and stimulating
Good, intense workout. Not as hard cardio as some of her other videos. Choreography is complex but not as tough as Rob Glick, Seasun Zieger, or Amy Bento. Only about 40 minutes so I add abs from another video. - posted by Kate on 2/1/2012
CATHE is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well all I can say is, I lost myself because of a death in my family. Now I'm trying to get back into working out for myself. So let me tell you people she is the best. Yes, it is hard, but do little every day. I was in great shape before with the help of her. I searched online for her DVDs. I love them and I'm getting back into shape again. I'm going to be 50 years old and I have a body like a 20 year old. Hey face it, we have to work for what we want. Come on look at Cathe. She is living proof. Thanks Cathe for bringing me back and feeling good again. Best wishes and God Bless!!!! LJ :) - posted by LJ on 11/6/2011
a complete waste of money and time
i'm an advanced stepper, love complex choreography, and pick up new combinations rather easily. this is my first (and last) cathe friedrich dvd. the choreography is far from "complex" or "dancy", it's actually somewhere between basic, intermediate and boring, but it appears difficult because it is very poorly taught. she cues too late, at times uses non-standard terminology and doesn't break down any moves, she simply does the whole combination and apparently expects you to either read her mind or stand (or walk, or step-touch, or whatever) around staring at the tv trying to catch up. judging from the titles of cathe friedrich's other workouts, teaching "dancier" step workouts is not her specialty, so hopefully she won't try it again. (i rated her with 1 star, but really meant 0 stars which doesn't seem to be an option.) - posted by Anke on 11/2/2011
Complex choreography! Don't buy this one unless you want a challenge learning the routine!
I think Cathe's cuing on this DVD is fine it is just that for the second and third routines she taught a big chunk all at once instead of breaking it down the way she usually does. It almost seemed as if she did this so she could fit it all into 45 minutes. None of this comes easily to me, I have to really work to learn any of these routines but I kept after it and got it. It helps that I know Cathe and how she does her step routines. As far as not breaking a sweat or it being more intermediate...make it high impact and jump or add some risers! I had no trouble getting my heart rate up there where I am burning the fat! I only have trouble getting my heart rate up when the choreography is so basic that I can't do anything with it to make it harder and this routine certainly has plenty of places to jump higher and work harder! I found this DVD's choreography to be challenging and fun! Well worth sticking with. - posted by Sassy on 10/24/2011
One of my favorites!
I am surprised to hear the negative feedback, but to each their own. I like the length of this routine--I am not one to enjoy an hour or more of aerobics. It did take a few times to get the moves down and Cathe goes into them quickly without alot of explanation, but I like that since I have the moves down and to listen to her explain the steps would get too monotonous. The music is pretty good, although I like a little more "club" sound..I am still able to get into it. I use a 6 inch step and would say I am an intermediate exerciser..this gives me a good sweat. - posted by Kim on 9/17/2011
Collecting dust on the shelf
I'm an advanced stepper and big Cathe fan. This DVD has the most complex choreography of any of the many Cathe step programs that I have tried, which made it very difficult and frustrating to learn. I'd rate the cardiovascular challenge intermediate (even using an 8-inch step), not advanced. I felt a huge sense of accomplishment when I finally learned the choreography. I figured I'd do the workout on days when I was tired or recovering from illness. However, after owning the DVD for a long time, I find that I don't do it often enough to remember the choreography and the cuing is often too late. Therefore, I sadly must admit that it was not a wise purchase for me. Cathe's Athletic Step and Intensity are much better step workouts if you want an advanced cardiovascular challenge with less complex (but not boring) choreography. - posted by Susan on 8/10/2011
Its good, but not easy
I like Cathe's videos, but find many of them a bit more difficult than I am comfortable with. So I read the reviews of this video that said it was too easy. So I ordered. Well, it is not easy at all. I like it, and I'm slowly (very slowly) learning the choreography. But I'm still looking for a step video that is not complicated, but gives a nice workout. - posted by Fiona on 7/28/2011
Fun But Far Too Easy
I am a dedicated Cathe fan, so I am sorry to have to say I found this workout far too easy. It is most definitely not advanced; I barely broke into a sweat despite using an 8 inch step. Although the footwork is interesting, it is far too low intensity and I found myself adding jacks, plyos and jumps in an attempt to increase my heartrate. For a Step beginner, this would be perfect, but is certainly not what we are used to from Cathe. Her HIIT title from the same series is proof that short workouts can be just as exerting as longer ones, but this routine doesn't live up to that expectation. This is the first (and I sincerely hope only) time I have ever abandoned one of Cathe's DVDs to my "too easy" pile. - posted by Jody in England on 5/5/2011

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
