Certified instructor description: A very high-impact, very high intensity Tabata workout. It's the classic format: 20 seconds of maximum effort, then 10 seconds of “rest,” repeated eight times (for a total of four minutes per Tabata). You get five complete Tabatas. They're intense, but varied — each series uses a totally different set of exercises. You'll be endlessly airborne with a non-stop medley of plyometric favorites — from “pop squats” and “power scissors” to “sprint shooters,” and “frog jumps.” Between each Tabata, Cathe adds a short step-aerobic “recovery” segment (the only time a step is used). Nothing fancy, just a well-cued and well-structured fat-burner. Requires a step. ©2012. DVD has: 16 premixes (7 to 70 min. alternate workouts), Chapter menus.

Cathe Friedrich's XTrain: Tabatacise

Dropped 15 pounds
I had read an article about Tabata and this is the first DVD I found doing it. I dropped 15 pounds in little over a week. Go Cathe! I am 62 y/o and it is impossible to lose weight at this age, but Tabata will do it AND eating healthy! Give it a try! - posted by Linda on 5/9/2013
Favorite Tabatacise
This is my favortie tabatacise video. I love the variety of moves - not the same move over and over again. The step work in between is terrific - I like the extra work, and it does not seem to kill me going into the next tabata series. I look forward to Cathe's next series! - posted by EAFN on 5/3/2013
Fantastic Video!
I bought this video because my gym has a tabatacise class but it is at an inconvenient time :-(.... I am a big fan of Cathe and my gym instructor recommended this video. A great workout! I have been using it about three weeks and am now ready to do tabatacise 1 and 2 - -it is very intense. Gets your heart pumping and muscles screaming! Would recommend this to anyone short on time but wants an intense workout. - posted by Dolly on 5/2/2013
This is a FAT BURNER
This was a good plateau breaker for me. It is great that you can choose to do how many tabatas you are capable of or have the time for. The additional bonus sets for the abs are great and what a bang for the buck. Be warned: the music will stick in your head but I think in a good way.Im new to Cathe and love her mature non nonsense style. - posted by A on 4/28/2013
Fierce Workout
Cathe's workout is tough and hits the spot. Although I go to the gym almost everyday and have done Cathe's workouts before, this one is particularly hard. It took me awhile to do more than one interval at a time, and I still can't do the entire workout stopping several times to let my heart rate go down a little. Since I love a challenge this was a great purchase for me. - posted by Teresa on 4/18/2013
Loved it!!!
First I have to say I love the entire Xtrain series! Excellent workouts all in all. I also love the set. I often workout at night and now I feel like I'm not alone, Cathe and her crew appear as if they're working out at night too!! So..."tabatacise"....I love a challenge and Cathe delivers!! The description is accurate. You start w/ a nice w/u then go right into the drills. Some are harder than others but because it moves pretty fast you don't have time for any dread factor. You'll def be breathing hard and sweating a bunch but it's not horrible. The active recovery sections can be modified if needed. The whole workout is about 45 min so you get a whole bunch of work in a little amount of time. Excellent! Awesome!! I loved it!! - posted by peg on 4/16/2013
Get ready to sweat!
I just started working out with Cathe but have been working out at home for years now and I definitely have to say she Rocks! I'm always looking for new workouts to build to my collection I don't ever want to get bored and I know I won't with this workout! Wow I was dripping wet by the end and felt like I was going to fall over my legs were on fire! Awesome I love a challenge and you will definitely find one here. Her bonus abs are very good too! I have never done Tabatacise before and it is now my new favorite! - posted by Heather on 4/11/2013
Great Tabata Workout
Excellent and effective workout for those of us pressed for time. You don't need to workout for hours to see results; tabata is the answer. Nice variety and I love that it provides options for the amount of time you have. - posted by Christy on 4/5/2013

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.
sample time graph
Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Step aerobics
X
Definition: Stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. Requires a step bench platform.

Benefits: Burns calories. Strengthens your heart. Increases stamina. The step helps boost cardio intensity.
