Certified instructor description: Peaceful yoga poses specifically selected and cued to relax your body as they lengthen your muscles. Cathe achieves total tension relief with longer-than-usual holds and deeper-than-usual stretches. Following a gentle warm-up, you'll begin with standing torso moves that smoothly transition into soothing floor poses like downward dog and "dragon into hamstring stretch." That's followed by a carefully planned standing-to-seated-to-floor sequence that emphasizes balance, flexibility and relaxation. The program ends with a four-minute meditation segment (e.g. "bring happy, positive thoughts into your body"). Calm, tranquil cuing with quiet new-age music. A yoga mat is suggested. ©2011. DVD has: 2 premixes (29 & 33 min. alternate workouts)., Chapter menus, Wide screen.

Cathe Friedrich's Yoga Relax

excellent yoga/flexibility workout
I think this is a terrific yoga and flexibility workout. I know this will increase my flexibility as I continue to do it over time. The poses are held for a while, in my opinion just the right length of time, because that's what you need to truly increase flexibility. I thought the cuing was good and the workout flowed very well. I have also done yoga x and various yoga workouts from Rodney Yee. They are all good, and Rodney Yee is probably the true expert here, but I am very happy to add this DVD to my routine now for variety. I also like the 52 minute length and the shorter premix options. The music is fine with me and some of it I recognize from earlier Cathe DVDs on stretching. I would highly recommend this one. - posted by Ann on 5/7/2012
will actually increase flexibility
not a flowy yoga practice, it is based on traditional postures held for long times to actually increase flexibility. I bought Cathe's stretch max looking for that but found the stretches too short. also, stretches every muscle, including quads, which many yoga videos miss. I love the dog wagging and chest opening. I would rate as all levels because it is very easy to modify or maximize. exactly what I have been looking for. - posted by sara on 4/25/2012
Relaxing due to llllloooonnnnngggg holds
I have gotten away from stretching as much as I should and I wanted to try this stretch to see if it is one I will use. The answer is "probably not", but it would definitely be good for someone. As with other Cathe workouts, Cathe is backed up by several background exercisers. The music is instrumental and relaxing. It is a good match to the moves that Cathe does. The set is light and airy. OK. Onto the details about the DVD and workout itself. It lasts for 52 minutes. There are two premixes that last 29 and 33 minutes. There is also a sub-menu from which you can choose individual chapters: > Warm Up Series > Standing Torso Stretches > Deep Stretches on Mat > Balance Poses > Standing Straddle Stretches > Seated Upright Stretches > Lying Supine (facing up) Stretches > Final Resting Poses The main thing to know about this workout is that Cathe holds the poses for a llllooooonnnnnggggg time in comparison to most stretch/yoga DVDs. This is a deliberate intention and she explains it at the beginning of the workout. It felt that this workout was more of an athletic stretch with yoga influences. I liked Cathe's delivery as she led the moves and gave form pointers without the more spiritual influences found in some true yoga workouts. However, I got bored with the long holds. The chapters were logical, but I felt in some sections that the moves did not flow and the transition between some of the moves was awkward. For those looking for stretching/yoga with longer holds than normal, this workout may be for you. It does stretch out and relax the muscles - if you hang in there with the workout. - posted by Laura on 3/10/2012
I like this alot.
Keep going to Yoga class as a student Cathe. Immerse yourself into your own "cocoon" feel and develop this further. If you are experienced you can expand on the postures as they are held for a while. Cuts the mustard. Good start. Not everyone wants a yoga routine where you are "hammered" into the ground.(your other routines can have that effect). recommend it if you want to be soothed, stretched and wanting more. - posted by scotland on 2/12/2012
Great stretch
I really enjoy this video. I do not think some of the poses flow well, but the video still offers a great stretch and relaxation. - posted by Jackie on 1/11/2012
Yoga Relax
Like this. Very relaxing. The only thing about this if you do the premixes, the cuing is very bad. It's like they forgot what they were doing and starting the tape again. Other than that it is good. - posted by Kathy on 1/9/2012
You will feel relaxed after this workout
Yoga Relax is a great workout and you will definitely feel relaxed afterwards. It feels like a more athletic/stretching style of yoga which is just perfect. The moves are done slowly and poses are held for awhile but the workout doesn't feel like it is dragging at any point. I'm still working on enjoying yoga and I find with most yoga workouts, I'm always watching the clock to see when it will end. I found I wasn't doing that (ok maybe only twice) and the workout just flew by. The best part was that at the end, I felt completely relaxed and didn't even realize how much tension I had been holding before the workout. I will definitely be including this one on a regular basis to relax and de-stress. - posted by Nancy on 11/27/2011
This Yoga Video Takes Its Time
As someone who has been doing yoga for many years and has amassed quite a collection of yoga videos, it's nice to find a new one that really allows you to relax into the poses without rushing through to achieve a "workout" effect. Cathe does a great job of including a variety of both standing and floor poses that provide deep stretching and relaxing experiences. Equally important, she brings in poses that are all too rare in most videos: standing back and side bends, dancer's pose, camel, threading the needle, and balancing poses like tree pose and stork, among many others. She clearly did her homework to come up with a well structured yoga video that offers something a bit different, yet fulfilling. Thanks, Cathe! - posted by Stephanie on 11/25/2011
Yoga Relax lives up to its name
I have a number of Cathe workout DVDs, so I expected the best and I was not disappointed. I have been watching my blood pressure and looking for ways to meditate. This DVD was perfect. I was so relaxed by the end that I was half asleep. My blood pressure dropped by 30 points! And yet I felt that I had really worked my muscles and my balance. - posted by Celia on 11/25/2011
Unfortunately not.
I didn't feel relaxed or very stretched out at the end of this one. I think it was because the exercises did not flow from one to the other and the atmosphere of the dvd was very dry and too serious. Had potential but was missing some elements for me. Cathe & cast seemed uncomforable and unhappy in this dvd. - posted by SAF on 11/9/2011

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes

These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Chapter menus

You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
