Certified instructor description: Two very challenging workouts by a superb instructor. “Step, Jump & Pump” begins with non-dancy step aerobics followed by floor aero/tone intervals. The higher-impact cardio intervals feature old-school favorites like “four knees,” “skater jumps” and “two leaps to the side” plus some intense “power blasts.” The toning segments are classic Cathe — basic, but tough, barbell/dumbbell body sculpting. It all ends with tough ab floorwork. “Step Blast” is non-stop step excitement. The moves start basic and end ultra-challenging (e.g. airborne plyo-jacks, tuck-jumps and more “power blasts”). Soundtrack features some recognizable vocal hit songs. This DVD has optional “premixes” of shorter/longer workout sequences. Requires 2 to 10 lb. dumbbells and a barbell. ©2003. Not available in stores. DVD has: 23 premixes (19 to 90-min. alternate workouts), Chapter menus.

Cathe Friedrich's Step, Jump & Pump and Step Blast

Step Blast - Tricky Footwork
The footwork in this workout will take some time to learn - I've only tried it once. When I master the quick turns and changes, I'm sure it will be a lot of fun to do. It's not aerobically demanding throughout, but the "blasts" do get my heart rate up there. - posted by Tina on 6/23/2011
So many workouts, so much value!!
If you own Cathe's workouts and you haven't got this one yet, Shame on you!! You are definitely missing out! I own 21 of Cathe's workouts and though I love most of them, Step Blast is one of my favorites(if not my favorite even). So much variety, You will never be bored. When I am really dreading exercise this is the one that I can make myself do. If I am short on time I will do the Step,Pump and Jump Step n Weights premix. If you like: Rythmic Step(another great one), Body Fusion, Low Impact Circuit, Low Impact Step, Cardio Fusion, Cardio & Weights, Imax 2, or Body Max 2, you will not regret getting this one at all. If you are buying a Cathe DVD for the first time you will be buying more after this one. I own approx. 175 workout Dvd's and tapes. I end up doing Cathe's workouts probably 90% or more of the time. - posted by Kathy on 5/2/2011
Step Blast is my all-time favorite Cathe workout
Step Blast is probably one of the best step workouts out there by any instructor - good music, combos that don't drag on, and good set/lighting. I think this is the gold standard of step videos. I know that this workout is rated best by many Cathe fans. I pull this one out whenever I am in the mood for a great intermediate-advanced workout and when I want to have fun. The Step, Punch and Crunch is pretty good, too, but her cueing on the step portion is pretty bad. She's not the best cue-er in the biz, and this showcases her at her worst. I still like the workout, however. I don't bother with the strength workout unless I am doing an all-strength day and I tack this one on to another shorter workout. - posted by Heidi on 11/19/2010
I love this one!
This is a great combination of routines. I just love Cathe's work, and this is no exception. Fun and somewhat challenging. I am very happy with my new DVD. - posted by Cassandra on 6/3/2010
Awesome Video!!
I love this video. What I like the most about it is that there are so many different ways to combine the workouts. I've been doing the one called Step and Hi-Lo. It's my favorite!! I weight 145 lbs and I'm 5'9", and whenever I'm done with the workout, my heart rate monitor says I've burned 500 calories. I like the music and the different step routines. It's challenging and never gets boring. - posted by Beckie on 5/18/2010

One of the best
This dvd is one of my favorites. While the workouts themselves are tough (but FUN!), the dvd itself is superior in its adaptability. You can select loud music, regular music, or just vocals. You can mix/match the workouts, customize your own, or select one of the pre-mixes to adjust your workout to your level and time availability. I love the combination of aerobic and strength exercises because it really includes everything I need. And as always, Cathe is friendly and encouraging without being bubbly and annoying. - posted by Tauni on 1/31/2010
Step, Jump and Pump
I detest most step workouts with a passion, so I really didn't like this one either. I mean, all you're doing is step, tap, throw out a leg, step, tap, bend a leg and then turn around and step, tap, squat, step, tap, throw your arms out and step tap! Repeat for an hour! I'm more of the kickboxing type. I like to imagine I'm kicking some bad dude's butt all over the place! POW! TAKE THAT! However, I love Cathe and her videos are easy to follow and adjust. I found this to be quite challenging and I like how aerobics and weights are combined, but I just hate step workouts! So, although this wasn't my thing, I have to rate it high because it is a great video! - posted by Jen on 7/29/2009
great workout and adaptable
I liked this workout but since I dont own a barbell, I used dumbells and I can't do the hi aerobics but adapted to just using low impact. The only thing I didn't like about this dvd was Cathe constantly looks off to the side to read cues. It was very annoying. She usually is good about not doing that, but during the weight portion, that is all she does is look off to the side for cueing. - posted by Marsha on 2/7/2009
One of my favorite Cathe dvds!
I love the step moves in both Step Blast and Step Jump and Pump. I also love all the cardio premixes I can do amongst the two. Cathe is truly shines with her choreography in these workouts! - posted by Renee on 1/13/2009

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
