Certified instructor description: Three different instructors with three different step-aerobics styles. Each separate segment is intense, or do the entire two-hour program for an awesome fat-burning challenge. Laura Downing begins with “strong step.” Progressively building in intensity, it features a quick tempo, large movements and wide-ranging steps. Melissa Cantillo’s aero/tone interval segment is just slightly easier. Her cardio is the least dancy, while her toning blends upper and lower-body routines. Mark Hendricks is a true dancer. His on and off-step patterns are exceptionally choreographed and exceptionally fast-paced (“we’re here to dance, not just step”). The workout ends with a Pilates-style ab segment. Requires an X-ertube and 2 to 5 lb. dumbbells. ©2004. DVD has: Chapter menus, Narrow screen.

Well done
I loved most of this video. Laura cues very well and her choreography is sporty and fun. Melissa is good but not my style. Mark's segment is my favorite. Creative choreography, fun presentation style and inspires me to think out of the box as an instructor. I recommend. - posted by Mike on 12/3/2010
Overwhelmed
Mark's section should have been omitted from this video period. His section is so disappointing. - posted by Sue on 5/30/2010
5 stars for Laura, minus one - for the other two.
Laura is totally awesome! Very intelligent workout, the moves have very smooth transition, excellent cuing! The other two workouts - bo-ring. - posted by Jenny on 9/8/2008
Laura Downing's Routine is Awesome
Laura Downing's routine is my all time favourite step routine. It's smartly designed and challenging enough that you don't get bored, I must have done it over 100 times by now. It was fun when I was a beginner, and is still fun now I consider myself advance. Laura cues well and is very motivating. Melissa and Mark's routine I ignore as they are awful by comparison. - posted by Mark on 7/2/2008
train wreck
laura's is the only segment that could be labeled "advanced" in exertion. and that would be a generous assessment. the other two segments are moderate to low intensity. this dvd does not have "legs". it simply offers nothing to spark the interest of most advanced steppers. - posted by darlene on 6/13/2008

Will use occasionally
I have had this video for a number of months now. I like intense shorter workouts, and can do basic or complex coreography. However, I find I only like Laura's portion on this video. Melissa's is easier, and Mark's dancing is of a type that detracts from the intensity. - posted by AnneM on 3/23/2006
NOT WORTH THE PRICE
The first instructor, Laura was fun. I got a nice workout from her segment. The other two instructors were a complete turn off. It was difficult to get my heart rate up during Melissa's segment and I could only take about 2 minutes of Mark. Sorry, but I was completely disappointed in this video. - posted by Christy on 2/6/2006
Laura is terrific, forget the other two
Laura Downing is an outstanding instructor, and her segment is a great, challenging workout that I enjoy doing over and over. Melissa is mostly annoying and Mark is just awful. He has no idea how to cue and doesn't bother. His "dance" moves are mostly simple back-and-forth footwork that he does quickly, without explanation, so it's confusing. But if you manage to figure out what he's doing, it's really not much of a workout at all. When Laura does a video on her own, sign me up! - posted by Susan on 5/29/2005
Another winner
I really like both this DVD and its predecessor and I highly recommend them both. I found Laura and Melissa's segments to be heart-pounding and exciting with challenging steps that weren't too hard to learn. I love Melissa's friendly style and I enjoyed the circuit. I usually don't do toning but she made it interesting and do-able. Laura's segment was amazing -- great moves, fantastic music. As with the first DVD, I didn't care for Mark's segment -- too dancy for me and his attitude is a bit condescending. But Laura and Melissa make it worth every penny. - posted by Marianne on 5/14/2005
Fantastic workout. Fun!!!
This is the most fun step tape I've ever done. (I have over 100 exercise dvd/tapes by the way.) The moves are on the complex side, but do-able. The instructors are engaging. The combo of styles really makes it interesting. The dance section is my favorite, but also the hardest to learn. Tough and fun!!! - posted by doctordawnmd on 2/10/2005

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Narrow screen
X
When played on a widescreen TV, this program will show black bars on the left and right sides. On an older 4x3 ratio TV, it will fill the entire screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
