Time graph for Sharon Twombly's Athletic Step Jam
A solid step-aerobic workout followed by a unique stability ball aero/tone series. The first segment burns the fat; the second boosts the variety. The step moves are powerful and athletic with carefully designed transitions. Sharon Money Twombly teaches a basic pattern, then gradually removes the “filler” moves while adding hops, slides and directional changes. Next, she utilizes a slightly deflated stability ball for aero/tone intervals. The aerobic portions use the ball to add intensity (e.g. holding it overhead as you move). The toning intervals use the ball as a resistance tool (e.g. pressing it between your thighs while doing plyometric jumps). Songs include “Heart of Glass,” “All Things Just Keep Getting Better” and “Walk Away.” Requires a stability ball and one dumbbell. ©2008. DVD has: 5 premixes (41-85 min), Chapter menus.

Sharon Twombly's Athletic Step Jam

Good Solid Workout
Great workout--complicated without being hard. That is, the steps are tricky enough to be interesting, but not SO tricky you end up standing and watching because you just can't get them. I also liked that the combos were long, so you could really get into them before switching to something different. Also the overall video was long, which makes for a good challenging workout. I'll be looking for more of Sharon's videos! - posted by Judi on 5/9/2009
Sharon is Awesome
I just recently bought this one and now own all of Sharon's DVDs. Just like another reviewer, originally it took me a little while to get used her style being so tuned into Cathe, but Sharon is now my favorite if I want a tough workout along with great music. She sure knows her music. That's hard to find and I love it. This workout, just like her others is just excellent!!! - posted by dusty on 11/15/2008
This was fun
I have tried one other of Sharon's video's and I liked this one better. She has some unique moves that take a little while to learn and she does more non-step elements than many other videos but she works them into the routines well. I doing mainly Cathe videos and I liked this one as comparable to get my heart rate up. - posted by Angela on 11/5/2008
you'll be back!
i hesitated to buy this one because Sharon is not my favorite instructor, but its getting harder and harder to find new advanced step dvds, so i took a risk and bought this one. i am really happy with it. i keep going back to this again and again. the music is great, and the routine is well thought out and professional. i recommend this one to cathe fans. i really think alot of thought went into building this dvd, it is not too high impact, but it is effective cardio-wise. - posted by darlene on 9/17/2008
Just Not My Thing
I hate to submit a negative review after so many positive ones, but this DVD did not do it for me. I already own Sharon's All Body Attack which is excellent, but this workout just was too dancy and complicated. I was able to break a sweat towards the middle of the workout, but it did not have the intensity of All Body Attack. I was too frustrated to try the stability ball workout, so I can't really comment on that segment, however. - posted by Kathy G. on 8/30/2008
Very Solid Workout
I am mostly a Cathe fan, but I must say, Sharon might be tougher (at least in terms of cardio)! The first experience I had with her style was "All Body Attack." It took me awhile to get used to her moves and rhythm (being so used to Cathe). But, it is a very good workout. So, I didn't hesitate to buy Athletic Step Jam (espcially with all the great reviews). I have not been disappointed. I did the ball workout for the first time yesterday and thought "this is a waste of time." But, I'll tell ya, my aducters are SCREAMING today! The cardio moves are a bit tricky at first. I am choreographically challenged, so I was all over the map my first time through Step Jam, but the second time, I almost nailed it. Happy Workout! - posted by Kristen on 6/26/2008
Excellent!
I absolutely love Sharon and all of her workouts so far! This was (as usual) fun and very tough, definitely not boring and kept my heartrate way up! Her cueing is great, she has very creative moves but not super fancy choreography so it's easy to pick up. I can't quite keep up with her even though I'd say I'm fairly advanced, but I think it's just because she is in just such phenomenal shape! I look forward to many, many more videos from Sharon! - posted by Amanda on 6/16/2008
Great workout!
I liked this workout a lot! It was my first Sharon DVD, and her cueing was excellent. I absolutely loved the music. The moves were innovative and creative but not too difficult. I had most of the moves on my first run through. Some of the moves required a bit more space than I have but I was able to modify. Fantastic workout! - posted by Marianne on 6/10/2008
Two Thumbs WAY Up!
Tough, fun, athletic, fresh, sweaty, and FABULOUS! I love this woman! The choregoraphy is athletic, definitely "Sharon" style, but it's fresh and new at the same time. There are a lot of twists/variations of "Sharon" moves. The music is energizing and motivating. I like the way Sharon uses the step and the floor around the step. She is very down to earth. I thought her last two workouts, All Body Cardio and All Body Attack were great but that I had enough Sharon. I'm so glad I reconsidered and purchased this one! The stability ball section was a bit of an inner thigh burner. I was surprised how my heart rate got up and stayed up. I don't think the stability ball section is a good stand alone workout but it may be great to string along with sections from other workouts such as the dome section of Amy Bento's HiLo Dome Challenge. You could also make a stability ball workout stringing along Sharon's stability ball segment with the stability ball lower body work from Cathe's PLB and the stability ball ab work from Cathe's Upper Body Pyramid. I better stop b/c there are many, many ways to use this section!!! Another keeper from Sharon!!! - posted by Angela on 5/29/2008
I love the Choreography
I like the choreography of this one a lot. It isn't real complex but she throws enough into the combos to make it challenging and fun, but not too complicated. (No mambo cha chas, YEAH!) The first time I did it, I thought it was going to take awhile to raise my heart rate, but not so. My heart rate climbed quickly and stayed elevated throughout the workout. This is not dancey, which is a good thing for me. I like the athletic moves better, and, as stated, I hate mambo moves. Secondly, my only concern is, once you learn the 4 combos, she repeats all of them together too many times, imo. It was great the first couple times I did this workout, but I think it will get boring after because of that. I did cut out the last couple repeats, because it was getting to be enough for me. The ball is probably great if you like stability ball workouts. I don't care for the ball, so I skipped it. I liked the ab work and found it challenging. This workout flew by but I gave it 4 stars because of the last 10 min. of TIFTing seemed a bit overdone. I'm sure I will enjoy the premixes which may solve the tifting problem. By the way, I am sore in my inner thighs and not sure if the cardio or core was the cause. - posted by Cam on 5/16/2008

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Premixes
X
These are alternate workouts created by the manufacturer. They use the same content as the main program (i.e. the very same video footage). But the sections are re-edited into pre-made alternative workouts that you select from a menu. These are often condensed versions of the main workout.
Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Step aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The step aerobics segments involve stepping up and down on a platform. The moves range from simple stepping to more choreographed exercises. These segments require a step bench platform. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
