Certified instructor description: An exercise video classic — the program that initially launched The Firm brand in 1986. It begins with a varied series of blended aero/tone exercises. Revolutionary at the time, these fast-paced moves burn fat as they build lean muscle (e.g. jogging in place while you're doing overhead dumbbell presses). The second segment is pure toning — multi-muscle floorwork that specifically targets your hips and thighs. It features the Firm's “mansion” set with film-quality production and jazz-style music. Requires two sets of dumbbells (e.g. 3 and 5 lb.); ankle weights are optional. ©1986 (re-released in 2012 on DVD). Originally titled “The Firm: Aerobic Workout with Weights Vol. 1.” DVD has: Chapter menus, Narrow screen, Region 1.

Classic Firm: Body Sculpting Basics (Vol. 1)

Oldie but Goodie
I've been doing this routine since it came out (what......in the 80s???). I find that it's just as relevant today as it was then. Tried and true exercises; they work!!!! - posted by Isabel on 5/17/2013
Still the best full body workout !
My best friend and I use to do this together starting about 25 years ago. We had a blast doing this video, she has since moved away. But it reminds me of her when I do it. We got into great shape using this video. So now that I am in my 50's, and the weight does not come off easy at all, I have turned to the classic all time best! So glad they made this in a dvd. I have used this dvd for 2 weeks now and I am seeing results already.( arms getting great definition! ) Can't wait to get into swimsuit shape so I won't feel like I have to wear a moo moo this summer ! - posted by Patricia on 5/3/2013
yep, it's still a great workout & i still love it!
i don't mean to brag... (actually yes i totally do!) but i must be in better shape now at almost 40 than i was in my 20's when i used to do this workout on vhs!! i was pretty stoked to get this on dvd and revisit the workout - and actually keep up with it! i used to have like 4 or 5 Firm workouts (including this one) back in the day, but i never liked any of them except this one. i think this one will always be a fave of mine, so glad to have it again!!! also, i have to say that i love that it's totally 80's retro - the outfits and the full makeup and hair. it's just fun! btw, the floor work is still a killer!!! - posted by Ariel on 4/16/2013
Great Old School Workout
If you think you can't get results from an Old School workout, you are sadly mistaken, this video kicks your butt, and you get great results, try it and you will see! - posted by Donna on 4/10/2013
One of the BEST workouts I have ever done!
I currently have series 1-6 on VHS but my VHS player is not working well, so I was glad to see these available on DVD. I have done these workouts for YEARS and absolutely love them. It is hard to get through the whole workout without stopping but that is good because it keeps you motivated to go further next time. Susan Harris is an exceptional trainer as far as I am concerned. This workout will leave you stronger than you were before using it. After the 10th workout you will feel like you can do anything because this workout really delivers on building strength without bulking you up. You can also pyramid down if it is too hard on some of the exercises. It is a bit "old fashioned", but still the best workout I have ever done and I still enjoy doing it even after all this time. The exercises are an excellent way to familiarize yourself with the "FIRM's" style of workouts. The choreography is simple and easy to follow. The great thing about it is you can do it with small weights until you become used to the moves and then pyramid up to increase the intensity. You will be very pleased you bought this workout if you enjoy working out hard but seeing wonderful results. - posted by Kathryn on 3/28/2013
Awesome Workout!
I am so glad to be able to do these original firm workouts again! Susan Harris does a great job and is inspirational with her form. This is a beneficial all over workout. Love it! - posted by Dede on 3/25/2013
Keep Them Around
I had all these original Firm workouts on VHS and over the years gave them away or lost them with moves. I am so happy they are back on DVD's. I am slowly re-collecting all the Vol 1-4. These workouts are a little dated but really get the job done. They are gentle and I do not dread doing them. Thanks Collage for bringing them back. Hope everyone enjoys them as I am. - posted by Kelly on 3/23/2013
One of the Best Ever Made
I always wanted this video when I first read about it in the 80s, unfortunately it was out of my price range. I am so glad it has been re-introduced in DVD form and I plan to get and do all the original work outs. There is a reason The Firm became such a hit on the strength of this video. It is a slower paced work out with weights and aerobics mixed in between. It's tough (as instructor Susan Harris says) but after doing this work out in the mornings I felt all powerful. It's truly effective in toning my body. And after doing this work out for one month, I was never bored (I've since move on to Vol 2). The only down side is my weight hasn't really budged that much (not unexpected since muscle weighs more), but once the weather gets warm, I plan to jog to add more cardio to help with that. Until then, I'm really enjoying the toning effect I'm getting from this great workout - posted by Patti on 3/23/2013
Classic and still great!
I did this video back in college in the late 80s. I thought I would never be able to complete the entire thing, it's a fantastic workout! I am so glad it's on dvd now. I love the Firm's style of weights and cardio together. - posted by Sarah on 3/3/2013
Classic Firm: Body Sculpting Basics
I have 2 other Firm videos that I like very much. This one isn't as good. I think it's more the instructor, Susan Harris. I find it really hard to take an instructor seriously that has on a full face of make-up. I mean really, who does that? I like some of the exercises some of the DVD, but for the most part, I'm not really feeling it. Oh well, can't win them all. - posted by Kiki B on 2/22/2013

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Narrow screen
X
When played on a widescreen TV, this program will show black bars on the left and right sides. On an older 4x3 ratio TV, it will fill the entire screen.
Region 1
X
This DVD is designed for US and Canadian DVD players. It will NOT play in most foreign country players.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
