Time graph for Denise Austin's J.H. Pilates Matwork

Two approx. 20-minute workouts: a classic Pilates-type program and a more-challenging Pilates-with-yoga segment. You’ll build core strength and a lean, dancer’s body in just 20 minutes per day. The first all-floor workout is an easy-to-follow series of Pilates basics — “the hundred,” roll-ups, leg circles and “spine stretch forward.” The second program intermixes Pilates with a variety of standing and floor yoga poses (some of them are tough). Features a thorough introductory explanation on matwork technique and Denise’s usual bubbly personality (“you’ll look terrific!”). DVD includes a bonus 10-minute, lower-body-focused workout. ©2000. DVD has: Chapter menus, Region 1.

Tough - awesome!
This is a pilates workout that like some of the other well knowns will get you sweating (not like cardio but still sweating). Great to use after or before a cardio workout for extra stretching and abs. One of her better workouts. - posted by Camden Smith on 2/27/2010
My favorite by Denise
Like this workout. I used to do it all the time and had great results, always feeling very "lengthened" and stretched out when I'm done. I don't use it much now as I only have it on VHS and it's a pain to hook up the VCR. Denise did tone it down a lot in this workout, none of her usual pep. The main emphasis is abs so if you want to tone up everything this probably won't do it. Great for beginners with some more difficult options for when you get stronger. Highly recommend. - posted by Melissa on 10/18/2009
Still The Best
I first purchased this workout back in 2001, and after wearing the video version out, I came back and bought the dvd because it is THAT good. The pilates mat workout (the first one on the dvd) is absolutely the best! I have been doing it for years, and have always had such good results with it that it is the one I always come back to, even though I also have plenty of Ellen Barrett, Kathy Smith, Jennifer Kries, and other pilates workouts. If you like pilates - and I do - this is a GREAT workout! The dvd version also has a bonus 10 minute workout, and is a great add-on after you have finished the 20 minute workout. Well worth it! - posted by Jenny on 7/31/2008
The good the bad and the ugly...
For background info, I'm not a huge fan of either yoga or pilates and a full workout of "authentic" yoga or pilates bores me. But I think they can be very challenging and have really helped build strength in my abs especially after having 2 kids. I *want* to enjoy yoga and pilates but I just *don't*. But I actually enjoyed both these workouts. Denise keeps the workout short, sweet, and to the point. She talks a lot as usual, but in a more muted tone of voice, no screaming. I did have some concerns about form - unfortunately I think you have to already know something about form for yourself before you try these. It would have been so much better if good form pointers and safety tips were included. Another thing, you probably will notice from watching the Collage video clip, the cover photo does not show the actual background or workout atire from the video. She's actually in a studio with freaky red walls and giant wall murals of outdoor desert scenes, and she's wearing a crochet body suit that's almost transparent. It took a while to get used to. - posted by BAGS on 5/28/2008
denise great w/ pilates
i have many pilates dvds but for some reason denises are the ones i love to do. i think she is better at pilates than other forms. This dvd, hit the spot pilates and pilates for everybody are my faves. They are relaxing, fun and very effective toners. - posted by on 8/15/2007

It has been a real encouragement to me
I have been using this DVD for almost a year. I am very pleased to find that at my age (52) and after 2 C sections my body is getting toned. I am grateful for Denise and her interest in helping others. - posted by Janet H. E. on 2/14/2006

Excellent Workout
This is a great workout even is your not a Denise Auston fan (like me ) I've done her videos before and I know it sounds crazy I've never liked her voice but this dvd your getting such a good work out who pays attention, I'm an advanced exersiser (firm, tae bo & etc..) and I will alternate this dvd on days of the week, you do break a sweat and feel it the next day, her other pilates video is great also! - posted by Tammy Alcaraz on 2/8/2005
Love it!
I was so pleasantly suprised! I am a mom of 2 (one of who is only 7 months old) and my abs are flat!!! I never thought I'd see that again. I use this video at least 3x per week to supplement other workouts. Go Denise! You did well with this one! - posted by TC on 9/16/2004

Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
