Certified instructor description: An unusually effectively designed program that makes full use of your DVD player’s capabilities. It’s Denise’s usual enthusiasm and lots of proven exercises in a very flexible format. No complicated programming required; you simply choose one of three workouts from the first menu. The length of all three workouts is the same (with many of the same moves, so it’s easy to follow). But the intensity of each series is different. For example, the cardio sections range from basic floor aerobics to aero/tone intervals with dumbbells. The toning also uses different techniques and sequencing (e.g. combination moves for high-intensity, supersets for moderate intensity and opposing-muscle-group routines for low intensity). You can also create your own custom workout by programming the segments individually. 2 to 5 lb. dumbbells required. ©2004. DVD has: Programmable chapters, Music only option, Narrow screen, Close captions, Region 1.

Denise Austin's Personal Training System

# 1 Fan!!!
I have been a loyal supporter of Denise Austin for years..As a health professional,I find her workouts to be top notch;infact,I have most of her DVD's and love each and every one of them.I find it extremely surprising to see any negativity regarding her choreography and cueing as she is right on track with both..She is without a shadow of a doubt the best in the business, and I have not even mentioned her motivating personality..If Denise does not encourage you with her upbeat, always sees the glass half full demeanor,no one will...and this DVD is no different.I love the three different combinations/levels...it gives you options, and a little bit of everything!Forget the gym membership....this DVD was money well spent!!!Thank you Denise for keeping us fit and smiling!! - posted by Laura on 4/26/2013
Bad cueing, great variety
I love Ms. Austin, but I have to admit this is not her best piece of work. In the aerobics segment, cueing is totally wrong, and I don´t even think she’s counting the number of reps. On the other hand, the toning segments are good (except for the abs work, in which she makes a mermaid kind of movement with a twist that I find hard, even dangerous). I am an intermediate exerciser, who is getting to the advanced level. So I bought this video thinking that, since it is designed for all three levels (beginners, intermediates and advanced), I would get a decent and hard workout. I wasn’t completely wrong. Actually, when I played the intermediate leg segment I noticed she followed the “Hit the spot” style (which I had in VHS and I loved), so I’ll give this Personal Training System a chance. Overall, I give her a 3 because you get lost most of the times, but you can still get a good workout. - posted by Carol on 10/4/2012
Not my favorite but still a fan!
I love Denise Austin; let me just start with that. I exercise about 50 minutes a day, 6 to 7 days a week rain, snow, sleet or hail. I have never been a gym rat, started at home videos when my kids were little so I didn't have to worry about going to the gym. I have a ton of Denise's dvds and I think she is awesome. I didn't have this one, however, and ordered it along with my first Michele Dozios video (which kicks my butt by the way). The things I like about this video are that you can customize it to your skill level or time restraints. I love her upper body and lower body workout (I use 8 lb to 10lb weights for it) and I really like the ab segment (which is also on her belly blaster video). The cardio segment is not what I normally expect from Denise though. The movements are strange and don't seem to flow together for me (and I am used to her not so great cueing which I don't mind). I just don't like the movements themselves for some reason on this video and the cardio is weaker than normal (or maybe I am just used to her others and also this new Michele Dozios one which is exhausting!) Anyway, I still think Denise is one of the best and I will continue to buy and use her videos. This one is just a little weird for me. - posted by Debbie on 7/30/2012
Ok, but not great.
I have a couple of Denise Austin DVD's, and this is not my favorite. I enjoy the abs, toning and that you can create your own workout, but her cueing on the cardio sections are terrible. She doesn't tell you when you're moving to the next step, or how many reps you have left. - posted by Ally on 6/6/2012
A Total Success
This is like the perfect work-out system no lie. I lost a total of 110lbs. Yes, I was big as a house weighing 311. It is full of motivation. It makes you wanna keep goin' and goin'. Denise you really did it. Thanks a million. - posted by Molicious on 7/23/2011
Just what I was looking for
I am recently retired and am looking to extend my exercise program. This video is pushing me to do exactly what I'm hoping to do. I like the choice of levels. - posted by Lynn on 6/23/2011
But she's so wonderful!
I don't understand the negativity with regards to Mrs. Austin! She is a dynamic, fantastic, supportive instructor and fitness Icon that knows her stuff; I mean really, she has a body that puts us women half her age to shame! This DVD, is no exception! I love that you can customize the workout to suite your needs. In as little as 10 minutes you can be in and out on your way. I really enjoy her TV series and this is a workout that brings some of that home. You can do a beginner, intermediate, or advanced option and there is always something good to be had here. You can even do several of the toning segments back to back to double up on body parts so to speak. Denise is bubbly, lively, and sultry. She always has been and no doubt, will always be; I love her for it! Rating an instructor down for this is to me confusing. You know what you're getting before you even open the package- she's real, secure in herself and not changing. Let's rate the workout and not her personality. Her aerobics segment also reminds me of the old school aerobics you would get in the 80s. Although I was a kid, it's something so familiar and perhaps comforting when I use this and other workouts of hers. minimal equipment and time are needed to get a healthier, more active You! I am not the biggest fan of the background, I prefer her brighter sets. I have to add that I love the arm work, she goes a hair slower so you can really concentrate on getting the most bang for your buck-she varies the style depending on the level you choose (no two workouts are exactly alike). No dread, only what you would expect with Lovely Mrs. Austin! - posted by Old School Exerciser on 2/10/2011
Poor cueing - Much better out there
I'm a former advanced exerciser and currently at a beginner/intermediate level. Took about two years off unfortunately. I was not a fan of Denise Austin years ago but thought I'd give her another try now since she still seems popular. I really like the idea of customizing your own workout. However this video, like other Denise videos I've tried, is just not for me. The cardio is very poorly cued. The backup exercisers even seem lost by the cueing. I will keep it in my rotation for the toning and stretch segments only. Instead, I highly recommend Karen Voight. Her cueing is perfection. - posted by Jami on 1/28/2011
Denise Austin
Just like her PBS show. Mix of all needed workout types. Nice to be able to have choices of 3 levels and types of workouts and to customize. Great for just starting to get in shape and challenging enough to keep beginner to intermediate level folks busy. I do some of this almost everyday to improve my stamina and strength as well as a good stretch and flexibility segment. - posted by Barbara on 12/10/2010
Worthwhile, if you can work with her
I think that I am an intermediate exerciser. I have determined that the best workout combo for me with this video is the high intensity cardio, high upper body, abs and stretch. That being said, she doesn't cue well, this workout assumes that you already know the routine, and the number of reps is inconsistent. The look of frustration on some of the backup dancers faces is telling. However, my chosen workout combo succeeds. So, I keep this one in my rotation. - posted by KatheP on 8/3/2010

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.
sample time graph
Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Programmable chapters
X
At the beginning of your workout, you can select the exact segments you want to play that day. The DVD will then play all those segments in the order you chose.
Music only option
X
This feature allows you to play only the music, without any cuing (after you’ve learned the movements and you just want to do the workout without listening to the instruction).
Narrow screen
X
When played on a widescreen TV, this program will show black bars on the left and right sides. On an older 4x3 ratio TV, it will fill the entire screen.
Region 1
X
This DVD is designed for US and Canadian DVD players. It will NOT play in most foreign country players.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Aerobics & Toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
