Certified instructor description: Ellen smoothly integrates true muscle-toning into flowing ballet, Pilates, balance and athletic movements. She combines the effectiveness of a traditional aero/tone workout with the grace and elegance of a ballet class (the program is even done barefoot). Each combo works multiple muscles in a naturally flowing progression (e.g. you start with a squat, add a traveling motion, then blend in the arm circles — while always keeping your abs engaged). The moves range from Pilates butterflies and mermaids, to dancer pliés and arabesques, to classic leg lifts and repeaters. Ellen’s cuing is both mindful and easy to follow. ©2007. Ellen Barrett's Fat Burning Fusion

Sweet Relief!
I am a super-advanced exerciser (Cathe, Inferno, Insanity, P90X, MMA, heavy weights, etc.). I twisted my back over the weekend during and advanced workout and like a dummy still pushed through that workout. The next day I could hardly move so I had to do yoga and mobility workouts. I hate missing workouts and had this one available to me. Low and behold although it wasn't as intense as my normal workouts I do feel like I got a good workout for the day. The moves felt good on my back (even with all that twisting)and I feel like it gave me some great mobility work. Sometimes I push myself so hard that I forget I need to come back once in awhile to these workouts that offer pure joy in movement. - posted by Missy on 5/14/2013
Wow!
I was extremely impressed with how sore I was the next day. Ellen is awesome I feel so relaxed and stretched out with all of her Dvds by the end of the workout. Love her perfect workout for Mondays when you just feel like saying forget it! The best thing about Ellen's workouts is she truly gives you a great workout and she does not break you in half while doing it! Great Abs too! - posted by Heather on 4/11/2013
Lovely workout but a lot of overhead arm work
The set, music and instructor are lovely in this workout. I am an intermediate exerciser and was looking for light cardio. I couldn't give it a higher rating as I had difficulty with the repetitive arm work in 3rd, 4th and 5th position due to a medical condition. I ended up making significant modifications as I can only hold my arms in 1st and 2nd position for long durations of time. If you have difficulty holding your arms overhead, be warned you will need to make a lot of modifications. I also agree with some of the previous reviewers who said it is difficult to understand what position the legs should be held in at times- eg- are the hips meant to be turned "out" (like in traditional ballet) or "in"? Maybe it was the camera work or lighting but it was hard to see at times. I therefore agree with others who have said that the form of some other instructors is easier to follow. Still, I really enjoy this as long as I make my own modifications. - posted by Christine on 3/21/2013

Great workout
I am new to Ellen Barrett so this is my first DVD with her. I loved it. It is a great workout. I can no longer do step aerobics due to degenerative disc issues in my back. This workout got my heart pumping and was easy on my joints at the same time. I will be purchasing more EB DVD's. She has a new fan! - posted by Kathye on 2/16/2013
Good Workout
This workout is smooth and the moves are easy. I do not realized how hard I worked out til later in the day when I feel the muscle nice a tight. It is good way to start the day. - posted by Mary on 2/1/2013
LOVE it!
I guess I would describe my level as intermediate, so this workout seemed just right for me. However, I've noticed that with barefoot routines, the more energy I put in, the more results I get. Toning is truly integrated with the aerobics in this workout, which is a big plus. - posted by Mary on 1/26/2013
A Workout I Can Stick With!
I have Ellen's "Fat Burning Fusion","Slim Sculpt" and "Yogini Workout". I have been doing these exercise programs for three years. I am 60 years old and have always done some mild yoga to keep my body flexible and my core strong. I've never been one to do weight lifting or serious cardio. Ellen's workouts keep me feeling great. I alternate between the three videos during the week (Mon, Wed, Fri)and do my treadmill in between for more cardio. Over the years, I've joined various exercise programs only to quit because of the inconvenience. With Ellen, I can do the routines right in my own home, first thing in the morning, then get on with my day. I have two other of her tapes, but prefer the three I mentioned. I believe these exercise programs will keep me feeling good and hopefully prevent some of the stiffness and lack of mobility that plagues many of us as we get older. Thanks, Ellen! - posted by Joyce on 1/11/2013
a lovely Friday afternoon workout
This video really gets to lots of little muscles that often don't get worked out, esp. in the shoulders. I think if I did it regularly, my posture would improve. Some familiarity with pilates, as well as well-working ankles and knees, are probably helpful (lots of relevees and squats). You move the whole time and I was breathing hard by the end, but not sweating so I wouldn't rely on this for cardio. More cuing about whether the feet should be pointed straight or out would be helpful since there is so much stress placed on form. It's a nice pace to be interesting but not frustratingly confusing. I felt well stretched and nicely sore. - posted by Elizabeth on 11/30/2012

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Narrow screen
X
When played on a widescreen TV, this program will show black bars on the left and right sides. On an older 4x3 ratio TV, it will fill the entire screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
