Certified instructor description: It blends the power and control of Pilates with the elegance and fluidity of ballet (plus yoga). Nothing is ever “rushed.” Instead, the moves are deliberate and graceful ... but deceptively challenging — it’s designed to gently raise your heart rate as it lengthens and strengthens your muscles. Ellen incorporates a diverse variety of techniques. They include wide-ranging athletic combinations, pulsed ballet routines, yoga-based progressions and standing Pilates exercises. As always, Ellen’s smiling, “girl next door” attitude is friendly and inspiring (“you don't have to be a ballerina to feel like one”). ©2011. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Ellen Barrett's Live Grace + Gusto

My new favorite workout!
This is my favorite workout currently because I almost never talk myself out of working out anymore. When I'm tired or have a headache or whatever is going on with me that evening, I can almost always psych myself up enough to do Grace + Gusto, and I always feel better afterward. It's a good light day workout, still challenging enough to work up a light sweat, and Ellen's moves flow so nicely together that everything feels good at the end. And I really enjoy Ellen's style as an instructor. She's laid back, doesn't talk too much, but still motivating and inspiring. - posted by Jenny on 5/8/2013
Gentle and effective
This is the second Ellen video I had tried since I had enjoyed the Crunch: Burn and Firm Pilates video. I found this one to be a surprise. The first time I did it, it felt too easy. The second time I engaged my muscles more (as she suggests) and it turned out to be a better workout than I thought. There are one or two segments that feel uneven in the counts, but I don't find it to be enough of an issue to not recommend this video. In the end I feel energized and though I know I worked hard, I don't feel outright exhausted after I do it. Ellen is a pleasant instructor and cues very well. She's not over the top, but she keeps you motivated. - posted by Aundrea on 5/6/2013
Love it!
I am a new fan of Ellen Barrett workouts. Ellen is down to earth and gives great instruction. I like her combination of graceful stretching and toning moves that are not straining on the body. The best part is that it is a great stress reliever and the next day I am surprised to feel how much I actually worked the muscles. I will definitely be getting more of her workouts. - posted by Janette on 5/2/2013
More Beginner than Intermediate
I ordered this DVD along with two others in Ellen's "Live" series -- all were rated as Beginner-Intermediate level. I am on the high-intermediate end, and with the other two it was easy to work in that range. This one felt more like a beginner's workout. Whereas the other two have already become favorites, this one I won't do again. - posted by Nancy on 4/29/2013
Ellen's Workouts have it all!
Like all of Ellen's workouts, "Grace + Gusto" leaves me feeling stronger, more fluid, more energetic and calm. I love it! - posted by Barbara on 4/18/2013
Nice workout but arms get tired
I really like Ellen Barrett as an instructor, and I like the setting and music in her studio and live workouts. (Please don't change the music, Ellen!! I know some reviewers complain about the music in some of your workouts, but I love it and think It's a nice change from some of the modern droning techno music.) I enjoyed this workout, but I had a problem with holding my arms out for so long. Ellen says besides toning them, it helps to keep your heart rate up. Yes, I agree, but since I can't hold my arms out for that long I don't get the heart rate benefits as much. This workout seems to me to be mainly cardio and a good stretch, but there are chair squats which I love and abs and arms floor toning moves at the end. I like that a modification is shown for the pilates roll ups, which I can't do. For reference, I didn't think the cardio was as intense as on Fat Burning Fusion, so I agree with Collage's level rating. My heart rate did get up and I got a little sweaty. Besides my arms getting so tired, the only part of the workout I didn't enjoy so much was the "giddy-up" section; it just didn't seem that effective and the leg swings were sort of awkward to me. Still, it's an enjoyable and effective workout, good to have to use in an Ellen rotation. As I said, I like Ellen a lot and appreciate her low impact workouts, and I love her fusion technique! - posted by Trudy on 4/15/2013
Lovin me some Ellen Barrett!!
Again, Ellen has provided a great way to sweat and get toned without all of the traditionally high impact exercises. I feel more energized after doing this workout but not so torn down, so that I don't feel like doing anything else for the rest of the day. Grace & Gusto...Lovin it! - posted by Jackie on 3/29/2013
Great workout
I love all her workouts, looking forward to the next DVD - posted by Barbara on 3/28/2013
Feel Like a Dancer
Ellen Barrett is a talented dancer and exercise trainer, as cues are smoothly done and you know what is happening and what to do so that you do not have to stop and start again. You can just flow. This is a challenging workout that I love. The movements are done in a unique way, that feels great. - posted by Ellie on 3/20/2013
LOVELY WORKOUT
I liked her style on Slim Sculpt and wanted another Ellen w/o. This is a lovely w/o. I'm looking for a less intense and gentle dvd for in-between Cathe/Amy/HiiT days. Ellen's manner is friendly and hercuing is good, however she loses track and sides are uneven...not by one or two but by 8 or 16! This w/o would have been 4 stars, but this huge mistake should not have been allowed. Be sure to alternate sides each time you do this dvd or you'll be uneven. Otherwise I really do like this w/o. It works balance, posture, arms. You won't burn tons of calories, but changing w/o is good for body and mind. - posted by SMT on 3/17/2013

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus

You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
