Certified instructor description: It blends the power and control of Pilates with the elegance and fluidity of ballet (plus yoga). Nothing is ever “rushed.” Instead, the moves are deliberate and graceful ... but deceptively challenging — it’s designed to gently raise your heart rate as it lengthens and strengthens your muscles. Ellen incorporates a diverse variety of techniques. They include wide-ranging athletic combinations, pulsed ballet routines, yoga-based progressions and standing Pilates exercises. As always, Ellen’s smiling, “girl next door” attitude is friendly and inspiring (“you don't have to be a ballerina to feel like one”). ©2011. DVD has: Chapter menus, Wide screen.

Ellen Barrett's Live Grace + Gusto

Feel good workout
I love Ellen Barrett, and am glad that she has made two new workouts that are easier on the joints. I noticed with this one, versus some of the ones of a few years ago, I am able to do the entire workout without pain in my knees. I still feel a nice glow and stretched out by the end of the workout. For those who can't do high impact workouts, or find yoga moves too hard to hold because of stiffness, I highly recommend this workout. It keeps you moving throughout and works your core without doing sit ups, which can be hard on those with neck injuries like I have. You can add two or three pound weights to increase the level if needed as well. - posted by Deborah on 5/17/2012
I love exercising barefooted!
I think I have just about every Ellen Barrett video. If you are just looking at the little sneak peak you might think, oh that's too easy, but by the time you are done you are sweating and will have exercised every part of your body. I have been an avid video enthusiast for over 20 years and Ellen is among my favorite. You don't have to wear sneakers and be doing explosive moves to get a good workout. Grace and Gusto incorporates pilates, cardio, strength and a very wonderful flow. I recommend this exercise video, especially when you don't feel like doing step or high impact cardio. Try her you will like her. - posted by Diane on 5/17/2012
More challenging than it looks in a good way!
I am 40 years old, and just started making fitness a regular part of my life about two years ago. I have been doing Jillian Michaels DVDs for over a year and really wanted to do something different. I'd read other reviews here and this seemed like a good option. I love the barefoot aspect! I've never been a great dancer and never felt graceful, but this DVD has helped me be gentler with myself and I actually feel like a dancer at times! Ellen makes it very easy to follow along, never doing anything that seems impossible. I was surprised how sore I felt after I did this a couple times! It is a nice mixture of aerobics and toning, and I would say it's more "Intermediate" than "Beginner." I do this DVD a couple times a week to mix up with walking on a treadmill and the newer 5 Day walking workout from Leslie Sansone. It's a great break, while being a wonderful workout in and of itself. - posted by Jacqueline on 5/17/2012
Great functional workout
Just did the video last night - it is not overly difficult, but it does stretch and lengthen the body. A great workout for what I call "functional fitness." You do not need any equipment. Instead, you are barefoot on a mat, utilizing your own body weight to position and balance, resulting in a total body workout. - posted by Michele on 5/15/2012
Perfect Combination of Exertion & Relaxation
I love love love Ellen Barrett. Love the big range of motion, the creative combinations. Never overly repetitive or annoying. She's so awesome and this is one of my favorites of her workouts. Lots of flexibility work, but big cardio impact at the same time. Love. - posted by Kristen on 5/10/2012

Nice change of pace workout
I enjoyed this workout. Seems a little non-threatening at first, but you can definitely feel it afterwards. I had a good sweat going on. Ellen is very easy to follow. I'm just getting back to a regular exercise routine, and will keep this one in my rotation for variety. I also have Ellen Barrett's Flat Belly Workout, which I enjoy. - posted by Toni on 4/22/2012

This is just what I was looking for. Great stretching and toning. Sprained my foot 4 months ago and this has good moves for the foot, love barefoot workouts! - posted by donna on 4/21/2012

Reading a Time Graph

Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Wide screen
X
The program fully fills a wide-screen television screen. Note: These videos will display black bars at the top and bottom on a traditional 4 x 3 ratio TV screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
