Certified instructor description: A flowing workout that burns calories and tones your muscles by intermixing dance, yoga and Pilates. It's an exceptionally fluid and graceful combination — the transitions are seamless and the "fusions" are natural (e.g. a warrior pose that gently evolves into a plié). All the moves have a lower-body focus. They're moderately paced, but surprisingly challenging (Ellen often includes a balance or rotation element to increase the intensity ... and results). The ending floorwork is unique; it blends traditional toning moves with muscle-lengthening stretches. Also unique: the program was shot "live," so it really seems like you're in the room with Ellen and her crew. ©2011. DVD has: Narrow screen.

Ellen Barrett's Live Power Fusion

form instruction needed
Let me preface this by saying this was my first "fusion" type purchase, and I'm not especially well-versed in form for squats and such. I'm conflicted on how to rate this. I loved this video when I got it, did it 2-3x week when it first came out, then horribly injured my calf. That lost me a month of working out, and I just recently came back to it after checking with my physical therapist. Doing all those calf raises in a plie position (with feet turned out) was the culprit. If this is common fitness knowledge, why have a whole workout in this format? And while the cuing is good (and it's repetitive anyway), the form instruction is not. I just tried doing part of the work out with my toes straight ahead instead, and it went well. Time will tell. I may try this style of workout again, but with a different instructor. It's a shame, I like Ellen's personality. - posted by Sheryl on 4/7/2013
Challenged and Feeling Great
Ellen Barrett's Power Fusion starts slowly and becomes a study in body proficiency, as she picks up steam while never rushing anything. Movements feel good and get results. For either someone who is in good shape and needs to stay that way or one who is hoping to find a dvd that addresses inner and outer problem areas, this is a winner! - posted by Ellie on 3/20/2013
Great Workout--Loved it
I simply loved this workout. The moves are not difficult (except that threading part near the end), but the workout is not easy. I love her attitude and her easy manner. If you just sat down and watched the DVD, you might think this is not much of a workout but you'll know that's not true once you actually do the workout. I only have one other Ellen Barrett DVD and loved that one also. I would definitely recommend it. - posted by Elaine on 3/15/2013
Wow!
I LOVE this workout. I am so tired after work, but this video is just a piece of heaven. It's revitalizing, energizing, relaxing and so effective. I like the constant movement which created nice cardio effects. The stretching and lengthening moves made me feel so much less tense, elongated, and refreshed. You'll really feel it in your legs the next day with all the lunges and stretches. Just the perfect amount of all types of exercise. Ellen is a fantastic instructor. Love, love, love... - posted by Suzanne on 2/28/2013
More aerobic than you might think
Don't let the slower low impact moves fool you. This one will get your heart rate up. And, more than likely, you'll work up a sweat, too. I especially appreciated the fact that it accomplished this without fast paced or jarring moves. It's slower concentrated moves that focus on form and muscle toning rather than speed. Ellen is very chatty - which I typically don't care for - but her personality comes across as friendly and sincere, so it wasn't annoying or bothersome. The music was just so-so and some of the moves were repetitive but all-in-all I found it to be a nice change of pace and will probably purchase the Grace and Gusto workout as well. - posted by Nora on 1/25/2013
Good one!
I have done this workout twice now, and even though it's rated a begin/inter level, it is not easy. I have a few of her other barefoot workouts, which I love, but this one has a different emphasis. I think her videos are terrific, especially after a long commute home- they really help your body stretch out, and work in some cardio, all with that "mind/body" connection. At 58, I just can't do high impact cardio anymore, but Ellen's workouts do the trick. - posted by Celia on 1/3/2013
Ellen Barrett's Power Fusion
At first I thought this workout would be too easy but I really worked up a sweat. I have almost all of Ellen's power fusion workouts and love them all. This is a nice addition to my collection. - posted by Carol on 12/24/2012
The Best Ellen Barrett
I have most of Ellen Barrett's DVDs, and this is the best. For me it's a bit more strenuous than the others, and I feel the effects a day or so later. Love her workouts! - posted by Linda on 12/20/2012
Love Power Fusion work out
I like the "live" format as it is encouraging to see others sweat and occasionally lose their balance. I am 62 years old and feel this is an excellent work out to maintain strength, balance, and flexibility. Ellen stresses strengthening of the mid-back with many of the movements and this is important to counteract the tendency to develop a forward posture as we age. For the younger woman it will definitely counteract the time spent bending forward over a computer, in a car, etc. I developed neck problems with headaches while working from too much time in the "slouched" position and now with Ellen's videos I have very few problems. - posted by Liz on 12/14/2012
Love it!
I felt wonderful after this workout! My body felt completely energized. It is a great blend of cardio, sculpting, stretching and enlightenment. You will feel so in tuned to your breath and your body. I'm a huge fan of Ellen Barrett. She has a very friendly and motivating way about her. This is definitely my favorite of her workouts. I love that this video is shot live and the class is getting sweaty with you. I am 36 years old and I exercise six days a week; alternating cardio and weight training. This is my once a week, Saturday workout. It is great lighter workout if you are inter/adv., perfect for those newer to getting fit. - posted by Mrs. A on 12/11/2012

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Narrow screen
X
When played on a widescreen TV, this program will show black bars on the left and right sides. On an older 4x3 ratio TV, it will fill the entire screen.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
