Certified instructor description: Three compact workouts that feature easy-to-follow exercises that are both challenging and effective. Each program is unique — you'll use different techniques and different moves to achieve that workout's specific goal. The cardio program is a fat-burning blast. It combines abs-focused kickbox motions with higher-impact jumps in familiar eight-count combos. The interval series intermixes fast-paced cardio with upper and lower-body toning segments (that often incorporate a balance element). The third workout is pure abdominal floorwork — intensified versions of classic core exercises like planks, bicycles and butterfly crunches. Requires 2 to 5 lb. dumbbells. Friendly, no-nonsense cuing. ©2012.

Jessica Smith's 10 Pounds Down: Cardio Abs

Motivating and fun!
Have had my eye on this DVD for a long time, and so happy with my purchase! I will use this DVD, first, on days when I don't feel like working out, because it is so motivating! Jessica doesn't waste any time - you are up and moving, faster than you can think, "I really don't feel like working out"....and immediately, you DO feel like working out - it is fun! I've had it for about a week, and each time I use it, I feel like doing another workout, after it. Not sure why it is suggested Intermed/advanced - seriously, I thought it was a beginner's level! - posted by Linds on 5/29/2013
Excellent Workout
I had a chance to do this entire DVD including the Tabata and I absolutely loved it. I am 51 years old and I have been exercising for most of my life. I regularly go to the gym and will take a kickboxing class for an hour and then an advanced Pump Class for an hour and that will cover everything from weights, pushups and working out with all different types of equipment. I will do 2 hours of classes back to back 2 x a week and then I will also take an hour long class once or twice a week that is more interval - Tabata based so I am used to working out long and hard. I was dripping with sweat when I did this DVD! I used 12 pound weights in the Total Body Abs Transformer Section. I really like that these 3 workouts are each only 28 minutes long so they will allow me time to work out in the morning before work. The first part of the DVD is a great short kickboxing routine. The second part called the Total Body ABS Transformer is probably my favorite section and the one I will use the most. It only requires heavy weights and a mat and she does a variety of strength moves that also strengthen the abs. The other thing that I really liked about this DVD is that the exercises do not require a large space. I was able to do this in my living room. I was looking for a DVD that I could use on the days that I can't make it to the gym that would get me sweating and I just found it. This is a great buy - I really like Jessica Smith's style. I have several of her other DVDs and she just keeps getting better. This is one DVD I know that I will keep going back to in my rotation just like the Kelly Coffey Meyer ones. Do not hesitate to buy this one - it is really good. - posted by Debbie on 5/27/2013
This was Hard
This was a challenging workout, the moves are simple and easy, but does target all your "soft bits"! I was hurting in places I did not know I had. - posted by Preetha on 5/26/2013
Solid 90 minutes of cardio, toning & abs!
I really liked this workout! It's fun, straight forward and really packs a punch in each 30 minute segment. The kickboxing (Cardio Abs) was high energy with a nice, driving beat that was really motivating. Although some moves were high impact, Jessica always showed a lower impact version. The choreography was not complicated and it really worked the core. The toning segment (Total Body Abs Transformer) was challenging, but not overkill. It's a mix of compound weight work (working more than one muscle group at a time) and cardio intervals. There's no down time between each move to keep your heart rate up and the calories burning! The ab segment (Concentrated Abs) was a nice mix of balance work, standing abs and floor work that included planks, crunch variations and some work on the stomach that engaged the lower back. It truly worked the core/waist from every angle. If you're looking for something straight forward that gets the job done in a short amount of time, then this one is for you! - posted by Christine on 5/23/2013
Love, love, love this workout!
This is my first Jessica Smith dvd and I am now a huge fan! This workout really gets me sweating! I love that there are 3 workouts to choose from, plus a bonus tabata workout. I am always looking for cardio/strength combo workouts and this one has it all. The moves are more athletic than dancy which works for me because my husband does a lot of workouts with me and he can't do confusing choreography. I will definitely be using this dvd a lot! - posted by Michele on 5/10/2013
10 lbs down
This is my first Jessica Smith DVD. I enjoyed the workout. Lots of variety and it touches all body parts. My only disappointment was I could not access the bonus eating for abs guide. I followed the instructions in the DVD and the website was not available. I'd like to have that guide mailed to me please. - posted by joan on 5/9/2013
Not worth time or money
While Jessica Smith is adorable, the routines on this DVD were dull, predictable, and seemingly random. I didn't feel there was any continuity to or explanation for the choreography, and I didn't feel tired or challenged. I am returning. - posted by Carolyn on 5/9/2013

loved it
this is my first but definitely not my last Jessica Smith DVD. I think she is great - great personality - great cueing and great workout. you will surely feel this when you are done. I am almost 66 years young and am thin and fit so I don't have any weight to lose but I still want to get in a great workout. I had to stop for a little bit after each 30 minute session because doing all 3 sessions is very difficult. but I finished and felt like I had a terrific workout. you must add her to your list of great instructors. - posted by judy on 5/6/2013
Jessice Smith 10 Pounds Down
I recently lost 40 lbs and have those last dreaded 10 to go so this DVD caught my eye. The first time I did it, I will admit I hated it with a passion, only because I couldn't keep up. So I put it away and have tried it again a few more times. Jessica doesn't have one of those annoying voices, she doesn't bark the instructions, and the music isn't bad. I think the warm up needs to be a little longer. The moves are okay, but I am not a fan of the burpee's. I usually run in place when she is doing those. It's not my favorite but it is still in my pile. - posted by Bonnie on 5/2/2013

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Aerobics & Toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
