Time graph for Karen Voight's Pure & Simple Stretch

A solid combination of dynamic and static stretches with a great new-age soundtrack. You’ll increase total-body flexibility while listening to flute and guitar music by Narada Productions. This IDEA Instructor of the Year starts with faster dynamic stretches to warm every part of your body. Then, it’s a well-designed series of 20 to 30-second static moves focused on the legs, buttocks and arms. Karen shows three different intensity levels, gives precise technique tips and has a great attitude (e.g. “just relax into the stretch …”). ©1991. DVD has: Chapter menus.

Karen Voight's Pure & Simple Stretch

Quite nice
I agree with the other reviewers, there could have been more lower body stretches. But, as a massage therapist some of the upper body stretches, particularly trapezius and levator, were unusual and quite nice. As part of a whole body approach perhaps the best way to look at this is that on another day you will do a different DVD that has more lower body stretch to it. Then with this one a nice balance will be acheived. Altogether I liked this DVD and felt it has great value to your fitness regimen. - posted by Sassy on 8/19/2008
4+ stars
I agree with an earlier poster than additional lower body stretches would have been good. But you could just add a good pigeon or frog pose at the end if you need it. There is much to love about this video, I still highly recommend it: probably what I like most is that Karen does spend that 20-30 seconds letting you breathe into/sink into the stretches; it helps so much. Her voice and the spa-like music are very soothing. She cues very well too ("Don't arch your back here, lean forward and keep your spine straight...lift out of the shoulder...keep your chin down and the nape of your neck in line with your spine"). These are great stretches for your neck, shoulder blades, and most other parts. The out of style leotards don't bother me. Much of the time you'll be looking down, over your shoulder, or may have eyes shut; so no big deal. Don't pass this up based on something like outfits. This is soooo relaxing!! - posted by Diana on 8/11/2008
Okay stretches
In having problems with my feet, hamstrings and hip, I needed a workout that was only stretching and this helped somewhat. I would prefer more lower body stretching but not sure if this is available. With having another more current workout dvd of Karen's (but still dated) I found that I would have never recognized this Karen on this dvd to the current Karen. Her voice is totally different! She also looked so different! She does have a soothing voice but did not need the 3 other participants crowded along with her. The stretches were good, but somehow, I still feel it lacked something. - posted by Marsha on 4/18/2008
5-Star Stretch
I use this stretch every time I work out, whether it is after aerobics or weight training. Karen hits every muscle and this DVD keeps me from getting sore. It is amazingly relaxing with the soft jazz/new age in the background. It's all good, but my favorite parts are the neck and shoulder stretches. I carry ALL of my stress there but this DVD has helped me work through the tightness. I'm not flexible enough for yoga so this is fabulous! - posted by Lisa on 2/18/2008
Great DVD!
My husband has an arthritic spin and bad knees. He can't do all my videos with me - but this is a good one that he can do. We feel very stretched when finished. - posted by Debbie on 11/10/2007
Leaves me stretched and limp as wet noodle
I love this video and do it several times a week at night. It always leaves me limp and loose, and my arthritis doesn't hurt for hours afterward. I do slight modifications of the neck stretches, and some of the easier versions of some other stretches. Some reviewers didn't like the old-style costumes, but when you've been using videos for years, you'll see that costume styles come and go. What matters is the quality. By the way, I recommended it to an advanced exercise half my age, and she loves it too. - posted by Pat on 10/29/2007
A rejuvenating stretch workout!
I don't do Yoga, so this DVD is a way for me to stretch those stiff muscles. I'm 56 years old, do aerobics several times a week. After a few workouts my muscles start to stiffen up a bit. I feel a whole lot younger after doing this workout - really! My only criticism would be that I agree with another reviewer that the neck stretches are dated and, I think, too severe. I substitute a gentler variation. All in all, though, I personally find this to be a very beneficial workout, very relaxing! - posted by Kate on 9/21/2007

LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT
The stretches flow nicely, and are held long enough for you to get the full benefit. It truly is a total body stretch. It's so relaxing, I feel like a wet noodle after completing it. - posted by Charlotte R. on 6/1/2006
EXCELLENT STRETCHING WORKOUT
What makes this workout unique is that Karen holds the stretches for a long time. Allowing you to focus, breath into the stretch and further your level of flexibility. She does this for the whole body nothing left out. The set is bright, the music is my Narada. Nice Jazz, Karen has a soothing voice. She is serious in this one but all are focused on the stretches. There are two woman and one man with her. You could close your eyes, relax and follow her soothing instructions. - posted by NA/AWA on 5/23/2006

Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
