Certified instructor description: A well-structured workout that blends the cardio into the toning while integrating lots of multi-plane exercises — a combination that maximizes time efficiency. The multi-plane routines are specially designed to sculpt muscle and make everyday activities easier (e.g. a lunge is done forward, backward and on a diagonal — just like you move in real life). You’ll also burn fat and strengthen your heart by working at an aerobic pace (often using dumbbells, similar to The Firm). The program ends with a tough series of ab-focused floorwork. Kathy is more animated and motivating than usual as she moves among the class encouraging performance. Requires 2 to 5 lb. dumbbells. ©2006. Note: Previously released as: "Build Muscle, Shrink Fat." DVD has: Close captions, Region 1.

Kathy Smith's Matrix Ultimate Sculpt

One I Keep Coming Back To!
I keep this in my rotation - doing it every week or every other week. I lift 3x a week and include this as a light weight day (the other two being heavy). I use 7 lb weights and for some of the twists it is a challenge. I LOVE the core focus and it gets my heartrate up - and it's a full body workout. It may not be super strenuous but it is very functional - seriously hitting the abdominals/core from every angle...without a single crunch. I am an advanced exerciser so this is a lighter day - but it has such value in it's variety. - posted by CJ on 4/23/2012
My favorite workout
I have a LOT of videos, most of them pretty up to date, and I'm intermediate/advanced. This is probably my favorite workout. It's a tiny bit dated, and has been sold under various names, true, but the actual work is just great. If you do all of the parts it's a great full length workout, and the main 30 minute section is just the so much fun. I would definitely get it if you are considering it. - posted by Rebecca on 4/19/2012
I don't do floor lunges.
I have this DVD in its other incarnation. When are they going to give up on this, when its at the dollar store? The ab section and stretch are great, but floor lunges wreck my knees, so I do them on a platform. Impossible with the Matrix System. - posted by Robin on 4/18/2012
Love me some Kathy Smith!
This is my first Kathy Smith DVD and I really like her and the workout. I would say I am at an intermediate level and this dvd really gets my heart pumping. I find that I look forward to doing this workout and that is saying a lot! I will be purchasing more Kathy Smith DVD's. - posted by Suzanne on 2/28/2012
High Energy
Fun, fast paced and high energy. I admit that some of the moves go a little fast but if you pay attention to your form rather than the speed you should do fine. I purchased this DVD several years back. I don't do it as much as I use to because I have so many different workout tapes that I try not to repeat too much. I enjoy the matrix method because it has you using your muscles in different angles so you get to work the small muscles as well as the big muscles. My ONLY complaint is Kathy's yelling through the cardio section. I don't know why it bothers me but it does. Easy fix is mute or fast forward and keep moving. I do however love Kathy's bubbliness, if that's even a word :) and high energy. I don't think she's trying to show off or be cutsie as others have stated, I think she just enjoys what she does. Worth buying that's for sure... - posted by Nicole on 1/22/2012
Great all around toning and cardio
Can be made as difficult or as easy as desired by increasing or dropping the weights. - posted by Bob on 1/5/2012
This is a great workout!!!
I have done this DVD twice in the last few days, and it is one of those workouts that make you feel great all day long! Lots of squats and lunges, but why put in the time if you're not going to be working hard??? Also lots of stretching. This will be in my regular rotation. - posted by Diane on 8/2/2011
LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been doing Kathy Smith for years, I had this DVD laying around and One day wanted to start working out at home again {was going to the Gym 4x wk} I did this video with Jillian Micheal's 30 day Shed, no more trouble zone, and Banish Fat Boost. and let me tell you..I ended up just doing Kathy smith, a lot of what she does in this video is like Jillian Micheal's the no more trouble zone, but better, because it's not as crazy as Jillian's dvd's. I also like that you can do abs as you are standing, and the days you feel like doing it on the floor you have the 10min work out. this work out is more of a circuit work out, with out all the jumping. She also shows you how to do the work out if you are not able to keep up. if you are not able to do it. I will say that I did not like the background, and lighting of where they made the video, but once you get pass that..your on you way to a fitter you. give it a try. you will love it. - posted by Lily.O on 6/19/2011
Surprised at how different
I have been working out for a number of years to workout videos and at gyms. Kathy Smith is who I liked for STEP and upon purchasing this video, I was surprised at how different the workout is and I really loved it! I am sore and feel as though my muscles are worked in ways that they are not from just lifting weights. Great for the core and easy to do! - posted by R. on 3/31/2011
Kathy Smith's Build Muscle, Shrink Fat
I LOVED this workout. You can tell it's several years old, but I really enjoyed it. Easy to follow basic moves that really target every muscle. You could tell Kathy and her team had fun doing this video, which added to my enjoyment factor. I did the whole thing the first time and felt it the next day. I will definitely use this over and over. Core work was great! - posted by Marianne on 3/24/2011

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Region 1
X
This DVD is designed for US and Canadian DVD players. It will NOT play in most foreign country players.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
