Certified instructor description: Three complete workouts on one DVD, these programs were originally released as VHS tapes in 1984, 1989 and 1990. The moves and the music — not to mention Kathy’s “big hair” — all have a definite 1980’s feel. “Weight Loss Workout” is intermediate-level. It includes dumbbell toning, a blended aero/tone segment and mostly low-impact cardio moves (very energetic and playful). “Ultimate Video Workout” is inter/advan-level with lots of disco-style dance and higher-impact aerobics (e.g. jumping in place). It also has some unique standing balance/toning exercises. “Ultimate Stomach & Thighs” is done at various levels — the routines start easy and build to more intense (you can stop whenever you want). The abs program is all floorwork, a medley of varied crunches and curls. The thighs program includes standing and floor exercises — from squats and standing leg lifts to hydrants and on-the-floor side leg lifts. Requires 2 to 5 lb. dumbbells. ©1984, 1989, 1990. Old video
Bought the DVD because my wife wore out the original VHS tape. - posted by Hal on 2/23/2012
Kathy Smiths Sleek and Slim
I started way back in the 80's with these video's .... had to buy them on DVD. Love Kathy Smith she is a Classic! - posted by sally on 1/21/2012
Fun and Good Aerobic Workout
Thank goodness we don't dress like that anymore! But this is a very good aerobic routine, really gets my heart rate up, and very fun exercise and dancing. Kathy's cueing is great, which I appreciate. And her little body check tips about the correct position of your knees etc. are useful. The warm-up is good, but the cool-down is brief as others have said, and evidently there originally was a longer one. I like the other exercisers; they are cute. Also, important, my arthritic knees and feet don't hurt the next day. I recommend this fun workout! - posted by Isabel on 4/16/2011
Oldie but goodie
I had one of the videos already, but I used it so much it wouldn't play correctly. This set is nicely put together. I have taught Aerobics for 25 years and it is the style of exercise I grew up with. I loved it! - posted by Lori on 7/25/2010
Found an all time Favorite!!!
The 'Weight Loss Workout' has been my favorite since I got it new in 1990. Great Hi/Lo aerobics with 2 easy to do weight training segments. I am advanced and love the HI impact options. Fantastic all around workout. The other 2 workouts are bonus sculpting and genuine 80's classic. - posted by Sandy on 4/17/2010
Classic Kathy
These are 3 older Kathy Smith videos. They are good and effective workouts despite their dated look. If you can get past the dated look and just get into the workout, they can be fun. A note to Jessica about the omission of the Cooldown in the Ultimate Workout I think it was done to save disc space since they crammed three very long workouts onto one DVD, so to save disc space they used the cooldown from one of the videos as the cooldown for all three of the workouts. I too wish they would have included the original cooldown for Ultimate workout. - posted by Grace on 11/27/2008
Just a note...
I love Kathy Smiths workouts and have been doing them for years. I have all of the workouts on VHS though and so getting three of her older videos combined into one DVD is great! However....This is sold as 3 complete workouts, but not the complete ORIGINAL workouts. I am referring to the Ultimate Video Workout on the DVD. (I still have my original VHS version and have done it so many times I have it practically memorized!). I was disappointed that the cool-down from the Ultimate Video Workout was omitted from the DVD and instead replaced with a cool-down from one of her other workouts. I was also wondering why it was done that way. I guess when I purchased this I was hoping to get the complete ORIGINAL workout. I have not done the other two workouts on the DVD yet (although I have done the VHS versions) and they are excellent! Kathy is a great instructor, good with cueing, clear & simple moves but challenging and fun! - posted by Jessica on 6/3/2008
Not Bad
Maybe old but not to be sniffed at. Ultimate Workout I modified and did not touch the toning section in it. Workouts 3 and 4 maybe old but effective. - posted by Luli on 3/13/2008
Great Workouts
The ultimate stomach and thighs workout is an excellent target toning program. My favorite, and the reason I purchased this video is the Ultimate Video Workout. I like to do the cardio twice over, it's highly effective at improving your cardio vascular endurance through the high impact aerobics. The toning sections of the ultimate video workout are excellent as well. - posted by Kelly on 1/23/2008
Okay Video
I love the ultimate buns and thighs workout. I really feel the burn. I am 14 years old and have been exercising to videos for 3 years. Weight loss workout was really fun and challening. I hated the ultimate video workout. too many jumps that are hard to do on carpet. - posted by Katie on 7/13/2007

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Impact
X
Workout 1: Lower
Workout 2: Higher
Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
