Certified instructor description: It targets four distinct body areas with an effective mix of varied workout styles. You also get lots of between-set stretches that keep you motivated and flexible. Upper body, legs, butt and tummy — this programmable DVD lets you play any section in any order. The progressions include traditional exercises like pliés and push-ups, plus Pilates classics like “the hundred” and “dead bug.” But you also get less common isometric and deep-muscle pulse moves that target the smaller muscles in each body area. Kathy’s walking-around, hands-on cuing is especially clear and easy to understand (“lift with the arms, but lower with the shoulders”). Requires 1 to 5 lb. dumbbells. ©2008. DVD has: Programmable chapters, Music only option, Close captions, Region 1.

Kathy Smith's Total Body Lift

Kathy Smith Total Body Lift
A very impressive workout. Kathy's manner is not abrasive and the workout flows well. I've been working out with other DVD's for almost two years, and this one is using muscles I didn't know I had. - posted by Susan on 2/3/2012
Surprisingly Good
I was hesitant to get it based on the others' reviews, but I am glad that I went ahead and got it anyway. I really like it. I like Kathy's tone and upbeat mood, and I found the workout effective while not insanely intense. I do the FIRM and Jari Love, as well as Barefoot Cardio. I would put this in the same category with Ellen Barret. Both are good for me because I don't like quick moves, which tend to end up hurting my knees and/or shoulders the next day or two. I would recommend this dvd...it works for me!! - posted by Isabel on 12/9/2010
Kathy Smith Total Body
Was not happy with this video, for an intermediate level, didn't think this was a TOTAL body workout. Was disappointed in the video and I do not use it in my workout routines. It just seems like a toning video not a workout. - posted by Lori Roth on 4/24/2010 [note from Collage] As indicated in our description, it IS a "toning video" that tones your total body.
A+ moves, but lacks motivation
I've done this 3 times now (about once every 2 weeks in my rotation) and although I LOVE what the moves do for my body, overall the program just doesn't excite me. I bought this b/c I love the Lotte Berk Method, but those DVDs are too short and formulated more for beginners; so I wanted something at about 60 min and for intermediate/intermediate-advanced level. The exercises here are great, especially the arms section (I do a lot of Jillian's DVDs & this one is killer!), but I just don't feel motivated by the program. I've never worked out w/ Kathy before and I find her a little annoying-there's just something too cutesy about her. I also didn't feel that the back up exercisers were genuine (too many fake plastic smiles). I love the idea of stretching b/w segments, but Kathy doesn't hold the stretches long enough & I would have loved a short cool down/stretch at the end. This is purely an intermediate level & I can therefore see myself growing past it shortly-I'll then try the "Squeeze" workout when I get stronger to see how it compares. - posted by Megan on 4/7/2010
Great workout but counting/cueing bothered me
I agree with everyone that this is an amazing workout and I am wicked sore this morning...some of Kathy's counting and cueing really bothered me. The moves weren't synced to the music and that's just so important to me to have that driving rhythm. Her counting was erratic and I kept losing the movements, especially when I wasn't looking directly at the TV. The exercises are fantastic, and I really appreciated her putting a lot of stretching in between strength segments. Kathy looks amazing and I love her down-to-earth delivery...but it was annoying to look up at the TV and not be with her. I'm going to keep it a week and keep trying it. I also ordered a "Squeeze" DVD and I hear that's similar to this so we'll see. - posted by Sue on 4/7/2010
Wonderful Workout
The upper body portion of this workout is extremely challenging. I was shocked at the fact that Kathy only uses 2lb weights, but you won't believe the burn you will feel. I am used to doing The Firm workouts lifting 8lbs weights and I have yet to feel the intensity that I do from Kathy's workout. The lower body is excellent, as well. This video is a must have! - posted by Katy on 12/21/2009
Try it, you will like it
This is similar to Pure Barre (but with a WAY better arm section and less intense lower body) or Squeeze. As another reviewer wrote, if you have Squeeze or other similar workouts, you probably do not NEED this one. BUT! I like that it is divided up into segments that you can play in any order. It is very convenient. When I do Squeeze Stronger just upper body or just lower body, it doesn't seem to flow well. Total Body Lift does not have that problem for me. The segments go by really quickly. The arm section in particular left me feeling sore. Kathy was not too annoying. She seems to change pace sometimes in the middle of an exercise (without cueing it) so she and the cast aren't always together, and her counting IS a little off at times as well. But I can easily overlook this. I do not always click with Kathy but really like this workout. I bought it on the strength of these positive reviews and am not sorry. If you like barre workouts, you will not be either. - posted by Melissa on 11/19/2009
Love it!
I was really surprised by this one -- in a wonderful way! This is a fantastic workout. It's a challenge somewhere in between Bar Method and Pure Barre/Squeeze. There is no wasted time (as in Bar Method) but it doesn't kill me like Pure Barre. Perfect for my fitness level! And, the ab section is fantastic. If you like barre-type workouts, then you'll love this one. Kathy Smith is much better than I remember from 20 years ago. Plus, she's quite an inspiration. I'd love to look like that at 57! - posted by Ruth on 10/20/2009
OK workout, but I thought it was hard on the knees
This workout is OK if you like "Squeeze" type workouts. But I found that the lower body standing work was very hard on my knees. I can run and do higher impact exercise, but the squat type exercises in this workout really made my knees ache for several days afterward - and they didn't hurt in a good way. It makes me think that maybe people with knee problems should be careful with this one. - posted by Barb on 9/4/2009
I like this every time I do it
I am a big Kathy fan, so whenever she comes out with a new routine, I have to try it. I like the way she paces these segments and encourages you to do your best. Some of the leg work is very intense, even if you're in pretty good shape. For those of us around Kathy's age(mid-50s?), it's also fun to see her being sexy - gives me hope, that's for sure! Kathy's DVDs are truly worth more than what I spend on them. - posted by Alex on 5/27/2009

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.
