Certified instructor description: Walking-based moves that use dumbbells and faster-paced “bursts” to increase intensity. The steps are super-easy to follow — mostly simple marches and jogs, with varying tempos and directions (nothing more complicated than lunges or step touches). It starts with an aero/tone segment that uses dumbbells to add resistance and tone your upper body. That’s followed by a quick-tempo, pure-cardio section and then a standing, core-focused toning sequence. A unique element — Arizona-style desert scenery is superimposed behind Kathy and her age 20-ish exercisers (sort of like they’re exercising outdoors). Requires 2 to 5 lb. dumbbells. ©2006. DVD has: Chapter menus, Region 1.

Kathy Smith's Power Walk for Weight Loss

Most fun walking workout I've tried
I've tried a few walking workouts in the past but they usually don't hold my attention because they're too repetitive and too long. That is totally not the case with this workout. Kathy keeps it interesting, not only with the variety of moves, but the way the background scenery changes...although some reviewers don't like this, it actually holds my attention and makes the time fly for me (I prefer outdoor workouts/scenery instead of studio sets). I also like the fact that Kathy offers higher-impact options -- the walking moves develop into jumping moves so you have that option if you want a higher impact workout. Normally I do high-impact interval training, but I needed an alternating lower-impact workout. I'm glad I got this. - posted by Giovanna on 1/26/2012
GOOD WORKOUT!
I like that it combines a brisk walk with some weight work. I felt like I'd gotten a good workout when I was finished. - posted by Kathy on 10/20/2011
Fun and Effective
This is a fun walking workout. Has a lot of different moves than some of the other walking workouts I have done. It's not just a stroll in the park walk. I love it, specifically on my cardio days. - posted by Elaine on 6/18/2011
Could Have Been The Best Walking Workout
...if it weren't for the bizarre backgrounds and the out of sync movements. I'm taking it that Kathy actually recorded this at a different time than the background exercisers...and it shows. She is out of sync with them and often none of them are quite on the beat of the music. They are off beat just enough for it to be highly distracting. It really is a shame. The only way I can do this otherwise great workout is to look at the video as little as possible. However, if you can disregard these things and can get a smile out of watching the exercisers in cowboy hats, you really could get a good workout with this video. I will do this on occasion because I love walking with the weights and the varied moves. - posted by Traci on 6/12/2011
Cheesy, but good walking work out
I am not sure what Kathy or her producer were thinking when they filmed this workout. I really enjoy the workout, but the production is really cheesy (superimposed western backgrounds that constantly change, Kathy superimposed in front of videos of her exercisers, etc). The production aside, I think the workout itself is a solid walking workout. - posted by Dana on 6/2/2011
Pathetic
This video is pitiful...who wants to see Kathy Smith in western garb trying to act like a cowboy? Certainly not me...the workout is ok, but I was so distracted by all the cornball backdrops and the antics of her sidekicks that I wasn't concentrating on the workout itself. Oh, brother....Sad, because I really have enjoyed Kathy Smith videos in the past....won't be running to put this in the DVD player anytime soon. - posted by Joanna on 6/2/2011
Fun! Good Workout
On the days when you just don't want a high impact workout, this video does the job. Yes, the background scenery is "weird" as one reviewer said, but the exercises are solid and fun and the variety of moves keeps me interested. - posted by Jackie on 5/11/2011
Best Walking DVD Ever!
This is by far the best walking DVD that I've ever done. I've done most of Leslie Sansone's and this by far beats them hands down. Uses weights, makes you sweat and you can actually feel yourself toning up! LOVE IT! - posted by Brenda on 4/11/2011
Weird Production, But Effective Workout
This video has a sort of cowgirl/trail-hiking motif that tries to be creative, but actually interferes with proper understanding and execution of the moves. There are shots of the fitness crew weirdly superimposed on different backgrounds -- and the result is that Kathy and crew are out of step and out of sync. There is no emphasis on proper form and even Kathy herself encourages the crew to over-exaggerate the movements (which, if you're trying to follow it exactly, could cause you to neglect good form). She also uses a "clock" to explain where you're supposed to step (so 12 o'clock would be stepping straight forward, 3 o'clock stepping directly to the side, etc.) But when they superimpose the clock face on the screen, it's oriented to the crew's perspective, not the viewer's, which just seems like poor planning. Despite all of this, if you are seeking a walking video, there aren't many choices out there beyond Leslie Sansone (who I love, but I need variety), and if you can ignore some of the silly production problems and maintain your own sense of proper form, you can actually get a decent workout. - posted by Caroline on 3/3/2011
Nice!
I quite like this workout. It does seem to fly by pretty quick. If you are in the mood for a walk, try this and you will feel like you did much more! - posted by carb lover on 2/9/2011

Reading a Time Graph
X
Each workout shows a time graph of the workout sequence, from beginning to end. For example, this workout starts with a 10-minute warm-up and ends with a 10-minute stretch. In between, you'll do aerobics, then toning, then a cooldown.

Segments that include both aerobics & toning
Some workouts combine aerobics and toning. If the aerobics and toning are done at the same time, you'll see a "blended" graph. If the aerobics and toning are done in short, alternating intervals, you'll see an "interval" graph.

Chapter menus
X
You can play only the individual workout segments you want by picking them off a chapter menu (one at a time).
Region 1
X
This DVD is designed for US and Canadian DVD players. It will NOT play in most foreign country players.
Level
X
Beginner: Just starting out, very overweight or haven't exercised in over six months.

Intermediate: Active in sports, dance or any regular exercise (2 to 3 times per week).

Advanced: Very active in sports or consistently work out four or more times per week.

Aerobics impact
X
Lower Impact: Both feet never leave the ground at the same time. This minimizes stress on your knees.

Higher Impact: Includes movements like jumps, hops and skips. Very high-impact is called plyometrics.

Mixed Impact: This alternates or combines the above styles.

Aerobics choreography
X
Basic: The easiest to follow. It ranges from simple walking-style marches to sports and athletic movements.

Complex: More intricate combinations and patterns. They're ideal for people who like to dance.

Moderate: More interesting than Basic, less dancy than Complex.

Toning emphasis
X
Upper body: Arms, chest and back.

Lower Body: Legs, thighs, hips and buttocks.

Abs: Abdominals (stomach), core and sometimes lower back.

Total body: Tones all three of the above muscle groups.

Floor aerobics & toning
X
Definition: Includes two workout activities. The aerobics segments are fast-paced standing movements like marching, dancing and jumping. These segments require no equipment. The toning sections are slow, controlled movements working against a resistance. These may include Pilates and weight training.

Benefits: The combination of both activities provides a balanced workout. The aerobics burns calories, strengthens your heart and increases stamina. The toning builds lean muscles, increases your metabolism and makes everyday activities easier.
